Marty Zirbel rode sensationalto win the Novice main aboard the Chaney's Auto/Lou Kinish Yamaha 500. Novice action kicked off the series of mains in the $5000 Regional "IT program when local favorites Zirbel, Jack "Bugsy" Booth and tro-. phy dash winner Randy Roose (Hon) led the 12-lap main evenL Ted Taylor (C-A) took away first, but only held me lead for a lap until Zirbel came back to put a stranglehold on the 12-rider freight train for me lead. Booth and Roose shoved Taylor to fourm then Jace Carter (Hon) put hi~ in fifth. Roose bailed 0[£, allowing Carter to move up a notch and set his sights on Booth. Carter swooped by Booth with three laps to go and set the final finish order of Zirbel, Carter and Booth. Mike Oglesbee blistered off the line at the staging of the Juniors 15-lap main event. Oglesbee was quickly displaced by Fitzhugh which left Oglesbee to fend off a pack consisting of Frank Crane Jr. (Hon), McGonigal and Idaho's Rodney Reynolds (Hon Support). McGonigal worked like a madman, chipping away at Fitzhugl,l's already massive lead and found himself in second after getting by Oglesbee for good. Ryan Fisher, winner of the previol.\S Castle Rock Regional, moved to third followed through traffic by Californian Dan McDonnell (Hon)and Washington's John "Mad Dog" Mattocks (Hon). Oglesbee, McDonnell, Crane, Mattocks, Reynolds and Mike Lawrence made up a six way battle for fourm that drove speCtators crazy in a shuffle for positions late in the race. Fitzhugh fought his hardest to hold off points leader McGonigal's Rotax for me win with Fisher some distance behind in third. Fourth went to McDonnell, who slipped past Oglesbee, Crane was sixth. Fay left me pOle on the Ammco tools/Marushin/Super Trapp/BelRay Wood-Rotax to lead the field as Green found himself and Mike Sullivan (Tri) in lasL Caznpbell·would be Fay's closest competition early in the main. Fay settled into a lead all to himself as Campbell and Wincewicz traded paint in meir war for second. A Wincewicz/Campbell/Barkman/ Hurst/Green duel was controlled by Wincewicz until Green picked his way to the front. Green and Campbell had a two-lap battle until Green pushed by on lap 16, but Fay was long Kone and Green would end his night in th~ runner-up slot. Campbell finished third close to Green, but still somewhat far behind winner Fay. Results g.. . ..,~ EX MAIN: 1. M;cby F-v lW-R); 2. "'ndy Gr. .n tHont. 3. Jwff c.mpbetl (C-A); 4. But even that action didl"t cool me night's motOcross racing. The 125ccJunior molos were divided into divisions one and two, providing some very good action. The center of attention in division one was Jamie Steelsmith (Hon) who crashed in moto one, while running second to Jerry Roy (Yam). Steelsmith picked it up to finish sixth, then came back in moto two to fight to me lead and hold it to the checkers while Roy could only muster a third. The overall results .showed Roy on top, with Steelsmim second. In l25cc Junior division two, Jeff Irby (Kaw) was among the early leaders and worked to the point in moto one.; he held off the challenges from a most persistent Jose Sanchez (Suz) to take the victory. In moto two, 'Zachary Carter, of Campbell, charged to the lead to keep Irby from the double moto victory, but not the overall. Irby's second behind Carter in moto two gave him the overall with Carter second and Sanchez third. The 250cc Pro class was loaded with talent. In moto one Johnny Gardner got out to an early lead and was never headed. In the pack, Rich Mymen (Suz) worked up past Donny Anderson, John Dauth, Tony Richards and Joe Wright to gain a second at the checkers. Richards fell and men got going again to finish fourth. In moto two Wright and Honda Peninsula/Moto-X FoX/Proto-Pipe's Gardner were side by side until turn three. Gardner came in for a doublemoto victory, and Wright took second with Mythen bringing his Suzuki in for third. Wright rode me 500cc Pro class too, and was an easy but tired victor. Results BO NOV: 1. Grouliff started ahead of Mahoney in the second round, but Mahoney had less trouble and worked his way by on lap five to hold the lead to lhe finish. Bob Kosovilico finished as first Old Timer ahead of Bill Goff and John Percival in bom races. . Another large class at Sand' Hill Ranch tonighl was me 250cc Novice class which featured a battle between John Dodsen, Jotin Foster and Marc Hutchins. Foster also passed Hutchins to take second in (he first round. Dodsen took the lead in me second moto and held it for all six laps while Foster and Hutchins sorted things out. Jim Bowman STURGIS, SD, JULY 7-8 The-jackpine Gypsies geared up for the 44th annual Black Hills Motorcycle rally and races, due the week of August 6-12. Featured were back-to-back short track and half mile races lhat pulled riders from throughout lhe region. Perhaps me most interesling aspect of Sunday's program was the Calcutta auction. In me auction, spectalOrs are allowed to bid on riders. Th'e better me rider, the hiKher me price. If the rider wins, so do his "owners." At the end of the half mile races, there were more.than a few happy "owners," but none happier man those that had bid on the services of Todd Giesick. Giesick, of Billings, MT, used a pair of immaculately-prepped, vintage BSA racers to take most of me weekend's winners' laurels. It was a successful weekend for Giesick and for me sponsors, as me Gypsies finally got through a complete program without having any of the weamer problems that have plagued events lately. It looked like it might lurn imo anomer rain-out as clouds roned In Sunday afternoon. But, the only cloud mat mattered was me one raised by the spinning wheels of Giesick's BSA as he rode home with three main event victories, and a second place and fifth place. After spending most of the spring driving a sprint car, Giesick showed he hadn't lost any of his touch with sliding sideways on two wheels. Results SATURDAV 125: 1. Pat Schmter (Hont 2.
