Tim Michlitsch looked awesome
leading the 250cc Pro' first moto.
Lange (Yam), Tyler (Yam), Dennis
Ostriem (Suz), Ted Holt (Suz) and
Mike Larson (Hon) dueled for early
positions on the dusty. rough track.
Tyler got by Lange on the downhill
as Michlitsch left the competition
behind; as he has the majority of the
Gold Cup races. Holt was the biggest
surprise, moving past the trio of
Tyler, Lange and Ostriem to settle
imo second and follow Michlitsch
into the 1-2 finish positions. Tyler
took third ahead of Lange, and· Ostriem.
Moto two saw Lange, Rodney Keller
(Hon), Larson and Tyler coming out
of .the river-lined woods. Then Tyler
moved up to ride Lange's rear wheel,
looking for an opening, and Larson
overtook the tricky Keller. Missing
from the picture was firsrmoto winner
Michlitsch, who appeared in 12th on
lap two and worked like mad to move
into sixth until bailing of£. The order
at the halfway point, read Larson,
Lange, Tyler, Keller, Ostriem and
Holt. Lange rode consistently to hold
Tyler off for second, which would be
good for the overall win at a 4-2.
Tyler used a 3-3 for second and Larson a 6-1 third, topping the second
moto with ease. .
Former 500cc National Champion
Chuck Sun launched his Sun Racing
Honda CR500 into the lead of the
Open Pro class, as he, Larson,
Tyler and John Christian (Hon) held
down the top four positions on the
first lap. Sun dropped off the pace
two laps later, allowing Larson to
nab the lead. Tyler and Lange also
got around Sun, dropping the former
factory Honda pilot to fourth. Larson put a stranglehold on the pack to
take the win. Tyler held Lange back
for second with Christian fourth and
Sun fifth.
Lange looked to take the Open Pro
overall, but Larson was determined
to catch, displace and walk away
with moto two, which he did. Tyler
rode all by himself in second, with
Lange dropping to third late in the
race. Larson's second moto win gave
him a 1-1 overall, out-pacing Tyler's
2-2 and Lange's 3-3.
Mike Larson put togeJher a 1-1 score to place his Honda in·the Open Pro
winner's circle at the'Mulkey Gold Cup.
Reynolds and Elsberry.Onceagain, Pierce
and Reynolds pulled away from the
pack in a heated battle for the lead,
while Elsberry and People battled for
third. Elsberry managed to keep Peoples at ,bay for awhi!e, but 'Elsberry
dumped it briefly in a turn handing
peoples third. Pierce held on to take
the win ahead of Reynolds, Peoples
and Elsberry.

BAKERSFIELD, CA, JULY 21
Continental Motosports Club
sanctioned its first motocross
at Sprocketts Park tonight and
were greeted with an all-new
course layout. Alan Pierce and his
Kawasaki adapted well to the new
track by winning the l25cc Intermediate class.
In the first moto, three Kawasaki
riders emerged out in front after the
first turn with Pierce in the lead.
Chasing Pierce were jeff Reynolds,
Brian Peoples and Suzuki rider Mick
E4berry.·
~
Elsberry decided to break up the
Kawasaki stranglehold by passing
Peoples on the inside of a tight right
turn. Up front, Pierce and Reynolds
picked up the pace and pulled away
from Elsberry and Peoples. When the
checkered fla,g appeared, Pierce had a
slim lead over Reynolds taking the
win.

GREELEY, CO, JULY 20
Eric Sterner has concentrated
almost exclusively on the fiverace supercross series here this
season, and it has paid off as he
captured his second l25cc Pro win
after three events. He gated fourth in
moto one, but moved immediately to
third behind Tim Buchli and Stacey
Cook. That order remained for six
laps until Cook bobbled and Sterner
scooted to second. Cook made another
mistake a few turns later and Jim
Mitchell went to third. With twd laps
remaining, Buchli enjoyed a foursecond .lead while positions behind
him were changing rapidly. Mitchell
overtook Sterner for second; then
Cook stuffed back into third. On the
final go-'round Sterner retook third,
then Cook and Sterner banged handlebars and Sterner was knocked off
the track. Around the next tum a
lapped rider took out Cook. By the
checkers the reshuffled order was
Buchli, Mitchell, Kevin McKnight,
Sterner and Cook.
Sterner avoided anymore of this
trench warfare in moto two by grabbing the holeshot and holding the
lead for the duration. Cook dogged
