Corona Firecracker race a Pro show . ,.. 34 By Elaine Jones CORONA, CA, JULY 7 The Fourth of July may have been over, but the Pros saved their fireworks for Saturday night as they competed for the $1000 in prize money that was up for grabs. Things got off to a hot start in the 250cc Money heat as the brothers Cannon went at it on the quartermile oval. The elder brother, Chris, got off on top of the quick fourlapper. Curtis Cannon was held off until the white flag, then not only Curtis, but Ross K1all as well got by to take the two top spots. When the green dropped for the main event it was Curtis Cannon first into the first turn, with Chris in hot pursuit and Klall in the third. Four laps into the 10-lap main Chris was sidelined with mechanical problems leaving Klan with a clear s~ot at ~ur tis. Dave Ehrhan moved Into thud. Cannon had the track wired as he clicked-off fast lap times, never letting anyone get within striking range. When the checkered £lag came out, Cannon was the easy winner with Klan second and Ehrhan third. Cunis Cannon was the odds-on favorite to take the Open Money short track after he walked away with his heat race. However, the main turned out to be a different affair, Chris Cannon exploded oU the line, followed by jeU johnson, Curtis C. and Klall. One lap later johnson had taken over the lead and Klatt had moved into third. The fTOnt three diced all the way to the checkered flag, never more than a length apart. johnson rode the ragged edge all the way to victory. Chris Cannon was second and Klan picked up third. In the 250cc Money half mile main, Klall came off the line quickly, followed by Chris and Cannon in tow. Curtis was on the move, going into second by the second lap and taking the lead by the third. Klau came right back to reclaim the lead on the fourth lap and held it for one more before Curtis took it over for good. At the finish, they were holding their same positions with Klan keeping the Cannons from taking the top two spots. Results SHORT TRACK MINI NOV: 1. Tommy Rutson (Kaw); 2. David Sandars (Ylml; 3. Charles PALMDALE, CA, JULY 15 The Mouse moved to the Pro ranks and brought his road show to American Motocross Enterprises' L.A. County Raceway today. After batding all race long wiih local favorite Andy Ellis, Mouse McCoy added another notch to his motocross belt today as he gunned down the best of the 125cc Pro class and took home the lion's share of the $1000 Pro purse. Going I-I for a perfect win, McCoy had to contend with Frazier Park's Ellis as Ellis forced Mouse to use every tool at his disposal to put the KX in the winner's circle. Behind the steady fast-paced duo came the. other M~an Green rider, joe HopkinS, putung together a 4-3 ride for third overall. The junior Cycles gave the faithful gathering a real treat. Moto one winner in the Intermediate class, Tony Sulek, was bested off the line ill molO two by the KX60 of Dan Chambers. Chambers was racing to recover some pride after the lillie KX failed to fire on the grid in molO one. Chambers was motoring away until the sand gremlin grabbed his (ront tir~ at fI.lidrace and threw the unsuspecting nder lO the ground just past the tower left hander. Chambers remounted but not until Sulek and eventual junior winner, Lanny Turner, both got by. Eddie Hicks traveled all the way from home (maybe 15 minutes) lO completely dominate the I25cc Intermediate field today. jerry Wert, jeff Maybery, Alan Pierce, Brian Peoples and Tom Holt gave chase as the four Kawasakis chased a lone Yamaha. Ventura's Tom Holt was able to move by Peoples as the two shot inlO the stUller bump section on lap two only to lose it a bit later and finish fifth. Alan Pierce is on a roll and seemed to have the best chance to catch Hicks as he moved past Maybery on the third lap and finally got Wen on lap six for second at the checkered. Hicks again blasted his YZI25 into the lead by turn one as the second moto started. Pierce tried to take similar lines to stay with Hicks, but had to be content till next time with a second place and second overall. Tom Holt fa ired beller this molO and took a solid ride to third, and third overall. Results JR CYCLE BEG 1. Lanny Turner (HanI; 2. Dan Chambers (Kaw). JR CYCLE INT: 1. Tony Sulek (Kew). MINI BEG: 1. Joe Brou...rd (Suz~ Green terrorizes Castle Rock TT By Clay Ught CASTLE ROCK, WA, JULY 14 Randy Green demolished the Expert main event to finish a sweep of the entire weekend. Green put the motor on Mickey Fay (W-R) and Charlie "Brell" Barkman (KTM) to win in the same style that has made him the fastest rider on the Northwest TT scene and extend his incredible win streak. Ryan Fisher followed Green on their two state rampage, taking the junior main and setting juniOF fast time. Fisher sat on the pole position for the main event. Mike Lawrence (Hon), Fisher, Ron Waters (Hon) and Gary Trull (C-A) led the field through the dog-leg, with Fisher coming out on top when the 12 finalists crested the TT's jump. Fisher couldn't be stopped in pUlling a good portion of the course between himself and second placed Lawrence. Back in seventh spot, john "Mad Dog" Mattocks (Hon) was making a mad dash for the front, nipping Mall Krsul ~hen ~th Waters and Trull to sellie Into thud before the race ended. Expert fast time seller was Barkman's Hi-Point/Lillie/Gary's Tavern/Longview Ice-sponsored KTM. Barkman blistered around the course lO set a 22.54 and sit on the pole position in the E~perts' l5:lap main event. Green drIlled a kIller holeshot of a bikelength and a half lO lead the riders into turn one. Barkman, Fay, Mike Sullivan (Tri) and Larry Legarra (Tri) shuffled for positions with Green holding the ace. Legarra and Sullivan dropped to mid-pack, with Fay getllng around Barkman late in the main. Green was long gone, riding in the same manner that had him finishing fourth at the St. Louis Short Track National. Green took the win while Fay finished second and Barkman third. Legarra rode better than ever, for fourth ahead of jeff Campbell (CA), who worked lO fifth frofI.llast. Trophy dashes saw NOVICes run their three-lap contest first and it was Eschwig putting his Seat~le Honda into the lead. Booth was qwck lO overtake Eschwig and went all the way to home plate for the win. Fisher got the scratch in the juniors' dash with Mattcoks attacking perfectly to give Fisher the hardest-fought win of his season.
