Christian levels Sand Hill MX By Jim Bowman ENDURANCE CHAMPION TEAM HAMMER WINS WERA 6-HOUR LOUDON ROAD RACE BRENTWOOD, CA, JULY 6 Yamaha Support rider Craig Christian, also backed by Cycle Gear and Richmond Yamaha leveled the Pro competition at Sand Hill Ranch tonight by winning both Pro races. Christian, who carries the northern California Continental Motosport Club number one plate for the 125 and 250cc classes, holeshot both 250cc Pro races, but stalled his motor near the end of the first moto and George Hopper took the checkers. Christian held it on in the second round for tne overall ahead of Hopper and South African riders Charlie Tissen and Darren Sykes_ Christian didn't fare as well at the start of the first 125cc Pro moto. Dead last at the start, Christian passed Bun Avery and then followed the 125 and Open Pro classes for a couple laps before the steam started to build. Christian passed Jerry Brandt (Concord Yamaha/Malcolm Smith) and Wayne Archer and then began to apply pressure to leader Kimo Casey. One lap later Christian passed Casey ina thri lIer of a pass to lead the nex t three laps to the finish. Christian started second in the second moto to Casey, but passed him on the seventh lap to finish first over Casey and Open class winner Archer. Leading the Intermediate class riders in a split start tonight was Tyrone Earl, who has been winning the 125cc class week after week at Sand Hill Ranch. Cycle Gear's Chris Riddle led the second wave start aboard his YZ490 ahead of David McRae on the four-stroke TT600 and 250cc class winner Kevin Laurence. Earl held the lead to the finish over 125cc pilot Jon King, Riddle, McRae, and Open class pilot Mike Nissen. Earl had no Lrouble leading the second round from start to finish and now moves to just two points within the tally he needs to turn Pro. Riddle, on the other hand, had a little less Iuck_ An accident at the start of the combined 25010pen race required a restart which saw Nissen take the lead over Laurence, McRae and Riddle. Nissen then crashed and McRae and Riddle moved past Laurence and third-place l25cc pilot King to take that order at the finish. Mike Landgraf finished second 125cc pilot that moto and overall, and Jim Bowman motored his IT490 to third in the Open class for the same position overalL • Results OPEN PRO: ,.
