At the stan, Kawasaki-moumed Joey Bolen jumped, and was immediately sem to the 30-yard line. The restan had Gresham jumping imo the lead early. Along me back straight, it was Gresham, Gray, Rogers, and Doug Mignano holding the from spots. As they exited turn four, Gresham left the door open and Gray powered his way to the from. The two racers locked handlebars, causing them both to get off the groove in turn one, and lelling Rogers pull into the lead. Gray managed to hold on to second position, and in turn three, shut off early to stay away from the slick, outside line. As Rogers rolled the thrpllle on, Gray had squared off the corner, giving him a nice drive out of turn four for the lead. By the end of lap five, Gray had nothing but distance between him and Gresham, who had moved into second. On the final lap, Rogers tried to go under Gresham, but had to settle for third. Gray speeds to short track win By David James CHICO, CA, JUNE 9 40 Kenny Gray won both the 250cc Expert main event and the Open money race at tonight's Moural Associates' short track at £yde- land Speedway. In the fust250cc Expen heat, nine riders lined up for me six-lap race. Chico's Dave Kerr got the holeshot, with Mark Corsetti right behind. Yamaha-moumed Kerr, who is sponsored by JMI Racing, was getting plenty of pressure from the fast Corsetti. On lap two, Kerr entered turn one in front, but Corsetti managed to get a wheel under him. As they exited turn two, Kerr highsided orr the bl uegroove race track. With Kerr out of the race, Corsetti had the easy win and a £ront row position in the main. The second heat race had several District-36 black plates on the from row. When the starter dropped the green flag, Gray rocketed his JMII Smith Paiming/John Mason Honda imo the lead. Along the back straight, Steve Rose tried to make a move by pushing his machine against Gray's. However, Gray was determined to hold on to the lead position. Both riders charged into turn three, touch· ingelbows, with Rose on the outside. Rose had no choice but to lay it down, and Gray led the rest of the way. The second position was taken on lap four, when MiJ<.e Gresham passed Bill Rages to trllnsfer. series of five supercrosses this summer. In his qualifier, Knupp led from start to finish ahead of Terry Kyle, Jim Mitchell and Chris Sundstrom. Albert Firestine gated [ifth in the second qualifier, but by the end of the first lap, he was in the lead to stay. Randy Warren was also working his way through the pack and finished second. Dave Newell, another victim of a poor start, mreaded his way to third by the checkers. When the gate dropped for the main, all of the principals were out front, led by Knupp, Kyle, Newell, Sundstrom, and Mitchell. Only one position changed in lap one, when Warren passed Firestine for sixth. The top three were already pulling away as the others diced for fourth. Warren made anomer move in lap two to claim fifth spot. On lap three, Knuppcame out ofa tight left-hander and his bike stalled, letting Kyle by before he could restart. By the fifth go- 'round, the leaders were into lapped riders, which allowed Knupp to close on Kyle. Two circuits later, Kyle could not get around a lapper and Knupp powered past over a set o£.whoops. Warren finally got around Sundstrom in the continuing ballle [or fourth. Newell was cruising along comfortably in third, but two laps from the finish he crashed, to lose three positions. Knupp motored on [or the win ahead of Kyle, Warren, Sundstrom and Mitchell. The 125cc Pro main developed into another in a recent series of Stacey CooklTim Buchli clashes. Cook was the victor tonight. Results BO NOV: 1. Shene "'nderson (Kaw): 2. Jeremy Middaugh (Kewl; 3. Cory Perriton (Kewl. BO "'M: 1. Bill P8t'riton (Han I; 2. Robert Revoir (Kew); 3. Tom Lukea (Yam). Orr BOYD, TX, JUNE 2 Bobby Shaw and Alan Powers each had double wins tonight at Hillside Raceway in Boyd, Texas. Powers, sponsored by Dot and Steve Powers, claimed the win in the first 250cc Junior short track heat ahead of Dale. Brooks and Rocky Fivecoat. The second heat was dominated by Willie McCoy's Bates Cycle Honda, which was trailed by Trace Polson. Powers got the holeshot for the main, followed by Brooks, McCoy and Polson. After a second lap crash which put McCoy down in turn two and sent Polson sliding into the pit gate, the race continued with no challenge for Powers. Powers came out to complete the double in the Open Amateur short track event. Powers bested Shaw in me 125cc TT heat, then got the holeshot ahead of him in the main. Shaw, however, passed Powers over the big jump on the first lap and left him to claim second place ahead of J.R. Lee. Shaw had to work harder to put his Northwest Suzuki mount into the winners' circle in the 250ccTT main. Shaw and Kevin Switzer split heat wins, then Switzer took me lead in the main ahead of Rodney Young and Shaw. Shaw again took over the lead off the jump, only to go down with Switzer in the right-hander, causing the race to be red-flagged. On the restart, Young grabbed the lead, followed by Mike George, wim Shaw in third. Shaw took over from George off the jump then £rom Young on the right-hander. Young took the lead back on the next lap, only to lose out again when Shaw beat him over the jump and move ahead to claim the win. Young finished in second place ahead of George. The Open Senior short track entries were a lillIe anxious, and were redflagged. Jack Yost, Scott Brown and Andy West made the restart from the back row. Wim me wide-open hole in front of him on the first row, Yost was still able to put his Motorcycle Special ties/Shqei/KaI-GardlWorks Performance-sponsored Triumph into turn one in front of Scott Scherb and Art Witham. West got caught in the back of the traffic and had to work his big Harley through the field, cutting Yost's lead wim each lap. West made an inside move out of turn four on the last lap, but it wasn't enough to get to the flag ahead of Yost, who won by half a wheel. Scherb finished in third place while fourth went to Jeff Pritchard. Results SHORTTR"'CK 50: 1. Joe Gilbert (Vam): 2. Todd Way (Yam); 3. Jason Adcock (Vam). . 50 SR: 1. Chad McCrackan (Yam): 2.
