Oswelltakes Indian
Dunes supercross
By Tom Corley
VALENCIA, CA, JUNE 3
Tracy Oswell put together two
consistent finishes at the California Racing Club's "Rose
Bowl" event today to win the
250cc Pro division. The two moLO
winners couldn't maintain the pace
throughout the day, and had LO settle
for lower finishes overall.
The city of Pasadena didn't approve
an Amateurday at the Rose Bowl but
that didn't SLOp the CRC from "stealing the plans" and constructing an
even more challenging supercross at
Indian Dunes. Credit for this successful event goes to the CRC, the park
staff and major sponsor Van Nuys
Cycle.
Such obstacles like the Honda Himalayas were far more radical than
seen at Pasadena. The track was so
challengi ng that the 250cc Pro class
riders fell nearly as much as the l25cc
Beginners on any given Sunday. The
first moLO proved this LO be true.
Kenny lahrt "KZ" and jon lahrt
"jl" took the lead but their rallv
, ended when the red flag came out.
Ken Goldie crashed badly over the
Himalaya and was transported to
the hospital. Fortunately, Goldiewas
not eriously inj ured, and returned to
watch the final moLO.
With the restart it was loIi Meszaros taking the lead over Kenny and
jon lahrt. just past the finish line,
Kenny actually passed Maszaros, but
JUSt for a split second. Shl'HLly
thereafter, Kenny and jon collided,
losing their LOp positions and givi.ng
Meszaros the lead over Bill Ouellette
and John Hemme. Through the
KMET Rockers, Meszaros took a bad
line and allowed Ouellette to take
over the lead. Meszaros moved back
to fourth place. Ouellette was the
winneroverTracyOswell, who passed
Hemme to take second. Hemme was
third.
Meszaros was out to make up for
the lead that he lost during the first
round when he LOok the holeshot in
the final maLO. Louie Franco took a
D F in the first moLO, but this time
he was i.n second place ahead of
Oswell. Through the challengi ng sections, Franco swooped past Meszaros, as did Oswell.
o well was the only top-placing
rider who had can istent moLO scores.
His 2-2 tally earned him the LOp
money. The second place cash went
LO Ouellette with a 1-5. Meszaros
started out great in both rounds but
couldn't maintain the lead and took a
4-3 for third. Hemme, in his first Pro
race, had a good day as he LOok fourth
with a 3-4.

Gresham on the
gas at Cycleland
D-36ST
By David James
CHICO, CA, JUNE 2
David Gresham had to work·
his way through traffic to win
theeight-lap250cc ovicemain
event at Cycleland Speedway's
-
AMA District 36 shan track.
hannon Paimer, moumed on a
Bultaco, jumped in from for the first
two laps, but he had five riders right
behind. On the third lap, Mall Amaro
rode his new Souza-sponsored 250cc
water-cooled Kawasaki past Paimer.
As the two riders raced into turn one,
Amaro got off the groove and fell.
With the lead changing, Gresham
squeezed his Yamaha through traffic
and h.e was now hot on Painter's trail
Gresham and Paimer managed to
spread some distance between themselves and the rest of the group.
On lap seven, Painter was shown
the white flag. As they shot out of
turn two, Gresham had the power
over the Bultaco and stuffed Painter
in turn three. They exited tum four
wheel to wheel, but Gresham had an
inch for his first main event win in
the 250cc class.
In the Pee Wee race, five-year-old
Lisa Cooper raced her 50 Yamaha
across the finish line for first place,
beating jermamy Foush, who pressured Cooper throught the four-lap
main. Third place wem LO Neal Williams.
