Newell terroriZes TrinidadMX By Larry Johnson TRINIDAD, CO, JUNE 17 Four Seasons Honda's Dave Newell rode two strong motos today on his way to besting Terry Kyle in the Open Pros. Newell led moto one umil midway when Kyle wem by for Lhe win; however Newell never was out of striking distance. Newell led moLO twO all the way, but Kyle dosed again at midpoim and pressured hard for a couple of laps. Kyle finaIJy faded considerably, showing signs of fatigue from racing four 30-tninute moLOS in less Lban three hours. Honda of Denver's Randy Warren also overcame Lhe season-long Yamaha domination by winning the 250cc Pro class, albeit with some good forLUne. Alben Fuestine and Mike Knupp were leading moto one when they slammed into each other behind a lapped rider and their bikes locked together. They lost nearly a lap struggling to separate, and Kyleand Warren went by and finished in that order. Firestine and Knupp lapped the entire field in moLO two to no avail, since their first moLO calamity ruined any chances for an overall vicLOry. Warren rolled in third which was all he needed. The wildest race of Lhe day was the 125cc Pros' fust moLO. Stacey CQ9k stole the holeshot and roared of LO a big lead until he crashed in some doubles. He remounted in fust but the pack had caught up. A few laps later he went down again and Malt Lindsey rode by. Several laps later Cook and Tim Buchli closed on Lindsey, and when they dropped out oCthe trees off the tower jump, Buchli crashed hard. Cook kept pressuring Lindsey, and with twq laps remaining, cut underneaLh, altempting to berm off Lindsey's bike and fell for Lhe Lhird time. Lindsey motored to the win and Cook remounted for second just ahead of Kevin McKnight. The start of moLO two looked to be a repeat as Lindsey and Cook hit the first turn LOgether, but when they t1uottled up the straightaway, McKnight blew past for the lead. Cook jammed by McKnight on lap three and sped away to an easy vicLOry and the overall. McKnight held second, but had to settle for third overall behind Lindsey. - Results 34 60 NOV: 1. Craig Christian's Yamaha broke the streak in the 250cc class. In the 125s, Smith led from the drop of the gate in both moLOS. Christian managed LO get by Kimo Casey (aboard a Kawasaki from c.c. Honda), in Lhe first lap, and the positions never changed. In the 250cc Pro class Mark Hearn's Honda took the lead followed by Christian. Smith got a last-place start and took half the laps LO catch Christian, who had taken the lead from Hearns. Christian picked all the right lines and managed LO give Smith his only loss for the day. Smith holes hot the second moto and won with no problem. Local hero Joey Schlag gave SlT\ith some competition in the Open PTo class. Schlag's Honda holeshot the first moto. Smith and Schlag continued the back and forth passing until SmiLh finally was able to get a lillie edge when Schlag missed a berm. Jason Assad has moved up to the I25cc Junior class and took home a 2-[ victory. Darin Polsley led the first half of moLO one and looked like a shoe-in when he fell on the uphill and couldn't get started before Steve Weyrach passed and LOok the checkered flag, several laps later. Weyrach and Assad swapped finishing positions in moLO two. Results U5 PRO~1.. ijodney Smith ()'pml;,2,. Crai~Chri$ tian (Yam); 3. Kimo Casey (Kaw). 125 NOV: 1. larry Claussen (Hon); 2. Dennis Dan Bolle Racing-sponsored Erik Kehoe came loaded for bear, providing muth of today's excitement by going a perfect four for four to win both the 125 and 250cc Pro races. Kehoe didn't always get the holeshot, but jumped the mid-field triples with ease nearly every lap to make up time on the field. With the 125s running in a second gate behind the Open Pros, team leader Bolle kept urging Erik LO push a liule harder and by the 10th lap of each moto he was first overall ahead of Open winner Jim Ellis on his Yamaha Support Open bike. Gary Bowman (Suz) and Jon Nelson (Yam) gave each other real tests throughout both I25cc Pro moLOS in theu quesllo reel in the £lying Kehoe. But neiLher could match Kehoe's drive and seuled for running a war in Lhe runner-up position. e1son and Bowman pulled constantly away from the field and Lhese three finished Kehoe, Bowman and elson both moLOS for first, secondand Lhud at the pay window. Local hero Tony Toste served notice he is on the gas wiLh solid fourths boLh mOlOS and Lhe last check. The I25cc Beginners displayed an unusual attribute today; saneness. Aaron Ginn (Kaw) and Brad Beaman (Hon) rode good conservative laps 'til the field got through the hard sections then started to move up through the pack LO finish both motos first and second. Both these riders will be ready LO do battle with the Juniors soon. Results MINI BEG: 1. Jr Cecchetti (Vam); 2. Boyd Elder (Vam). MINI JR: 1. David Noel (Kawl; 2. Doug Huston (Vam); 3. Fay, Fitzhugh fast at Castle Rock TT By Clay Light CASTLE ROCK, WA, JUNE 16 National number 13 Mickey Fay blew the lid off the Expert main event at Castle Rock's second AMA Professional TT of the season to defeat Charlie "Breu" Barkman and Jeff Campbell. Chris Fitzhugh, like Fay, breezed to a total rout of the weekend. Fi12hugh has the most"impressive streak of wins in the Northwesl. Novice winner Marty ! Zirbel is following in Fi12hugh's footsteps, winning the main just as he did last night in Oregon. Zirbel sat in the pole position in .the Novice main event and used the spot to his advantage, stormtrooping into the lead over Robbie Blagg (C-A), Clay Clark (Hon) and Randy Roose. Blagg and Roose watched as Zirbel put his Yamaha into Lhe lead and flat out disappear. Roose got by Blagg LO seule into second, leaving Blagg with Wood-Rotax rider Jack "Bugsy" Booth, Lhecurrent Novice points leader. Positions started to seule late in the main as Zirbel literally coasted across the line to demolish the IQ-lap main. Second went to Roose, followed by Booth and Blagg. Local product Gary Trull (C-A) put his 500 into a devastating lead at the stan of the best Junior main event of the season. Trull's superb ride came to an early end when he was bumped from the spot by Fi12hugh and out-powered by the Harley 7500f Bob Moran. Moran had the fastest machine on the half mile's straight section, but Fitzhugh would gain ground in the TT's dog-leg section. Fi12hugh rode effortlessly in first with his smooth style. Californian Dan McDonnell (Hon) caught up with Fitzhugh after geuing by Moran, but Fi12hugh stretched out his lead to put McDonnell in second all by himself. Brian McGonigal (KTM) was fastest through traffic, working from nextto-last LO fifth. On Lhe last lap, he nabbed early leader Trull LO move into fourth, making Lhe finish order Fitzhugh, McDonnell, Moran, McGonigal and Trull at the end of Lhe 12-lap main. Green jumped thestarlof the Expert main event, to require a restart, which put Fay into the lead over Campbell, Green, and Barkman. Barkman rallied LO second after a lengLhy, three-lap duel with Campbell, which set up a Campbell/Green/Hurst baule after Sullivan crashed. Wincewicz and teammate McCullough overcame poor starts to move themselves into the action, but wouldn't gain ground on Fay, who pulled away. Fay, Barkman. and Campbell rode magnificently, maneuvering the half-mile course on their single cylinder 500s while Green did all he could LO close in. Green finished farther back than he has all season - fourth. Fay wheelied across the line beating Barkman, Campbell, Green and Hurst, who rounded out the top five. Two more Triumphs rode across the line for sixth and seventh, piloted by Wincewicz and McCullough. Results EX: 1. Mickey Fay (Hon); 2. ChMlie Barltman (KTM); 3. Jeff campllell IC-Ak 4.
