Friesen fries 'em
at DeAnza
By Michael Gillies
SUN YMEAD, CA, JUNE 17
Suzuki of Riverside's Jon Friesen took the overall win today
in DeAnza's 250cc Intermediate
class with a hard earned 1-2
-
score.
Cycle Stop's Steve Piatlon blasted
into the first turn ahead of Henery
Marmolejo (Han), Cycle News Assistant Editor Kit Palmer, and Team
Tamm 's Jon Hall (Han). By the end
of lap one, Hall had forced his way to
second and started giving Piatlon
some pressure. Friesen gated poorly,
but was on Hall's rear wheel by lap
two. Hall gave in to Friesen's pressure a couple of laps later, which
gave Piatlon enough time to pull a
IO-seeond lead. Friesen spent the next
five laps making every second count
as he slowly reeled in Piallon. By lap
12, Friesen was in the lead with a very
determined Piatlon on his tail. Friesen
didn't let Piatton get within triking
distance, so the order at the checkers
wa Friesen, Piallon, with Torco's
Keith DyserL(Suz) in third, and Ruben
Alvarado (Suz) in fourth after a la t
pia e tart in the II-man class.
Alvarado stole the holeshot in the
econd moto, with PiatLOn, Palmer,
and pectro' Danny Jean hot on hi
heels. Alvarado set a bli tering pace
for the first two laps that Piatton wa
finding hard to match. By the third
lap, Friesen had worked up LO third
and was soon applying pressure to
Piallon. Friesen made his move on
Piatton on the sixth lap and set his
sights on Alvardo, who was slowing
a bit but still had a commanding
lead. Hall rode most of this moto in
fourth, only LO fade towards the end
and let Jean and Malcolm Smith's
Tom Thorn en by. Alvarado crui ed
through the checkered flag about five
seconds in front of Friesen, while
Piatlon, Jean, and Thomsen filled
the next three places. Friesen's 1-2
beat Alvarado's 4-1, which edged out
Piallon's'2-3 for second.

Saddlebaek
SummerSeries MX
By Bob Brown
ORANGE, CA, JUNE 17
Saddleback Park got into the
promotion business itself by
presenting the first event in a
two-race Summer Serie . Highlighting the event was a wide variety
of prizes, from cash LO gift certificates
LO apparel to products, and as a
result, everyone who competed got
something.
In the I25cc Intermediates, Honda
rider "Wild Willie" urratl gOt a lot;
he went two for two for the win over
teve Ski bel (Suz) and Mike McLain
(Kaw).
In the 125cc ovices, the largest
class of the day, it was Tony Magallanes on a Honda with back-to-back
wins. Suzuki rider icolas E pana,
from Guadalupe, Mexico, finished
second over Pentli Jussila (all the
way from Torrance) on a Yamaha.
HOl racing was the order of the day
in the Mini Expert classes. with $1000
up for grabs. Team Green's Bobby
Moore took the holeshot in the first
Stock moLO, followed closely by Pro
Circuit!American Honda-sponsored
COll Brown and R&D Suzuki's Mike
Healey. And, that's the way the moto
finished.
The second moLO also featured
Moore,.Brown and Healey out first,

Vipers' 0-37 DES
By Rick Curtis
LUCERNE VALLEY,CA,JUNE9-IO
Team Husky's Dan Smith once
again proved that he is in a
class by himself, this time at
the Desert Vipers 0-37 Dual
European Scrambles. He won both
the Saturday and Sunday races in the
Open Expert class, with Chuck
Stearns taking second both days.
Smith also won the 250cc Expert race
on Sunday but a flat tire on Saturday
allowed the win to go to Ed Pierce.
However, Husky's hopes for 1984
were set back somewhat when it was
learned that Dan Ashcraft bailed and
broke a collarbone.
Duane Summers and Tom Elias set
the 'pace both days in the C bikes, the
175cc Expert class. On Saturday Elias
led for much of the race but a loose
gas tank forced him to stop. After
repairing, he still was running
fourth. Atthe finish, however, he finished second after charging hard. On
Sunday, Duane Summers led from
start LO finish with Elias a close
second. Both rode Cagivas.
Bill Saltzman and Ron Hall showed
the Seniors the way around on Sunday. Both are Checkers and the race
was between them as they quickly
outdistanced the field. altzman took
first overall and Hall second, but first
250cc. They both finished half a lap
ahead of the fieldl
One of the weekends high points
was a "kids" race on Saturday. As a
promotion to get new interest in
desert racing, it was a clear success.
'fake note, the winner of this race was
Dan Smith's younger brother... he
nearly lapped the entire fieldl This
could portend future events in District 37 desert races.
A complete list of the results was
unavailable from the Desert Vipers,
consequently, they cannot be listed.
Brubaker wif.ls
amidst Seoular
controversy
By Lori Tyson
RIVERSIDE, CA, JUNE 17
Todd Brubaker won the 600cc
Supersueet race at the American
Federation of Motorcyclists'
Riverside meet, twice! The first
_J:3Ce..was..£or points, the second was a
money race. In the first, La Habra
Yamaha's Richard Seoular got the
holeshot, but by the end of the first
lap, Brubaker had stolen the lead,
and never relinquished it. Seoular
then fought Champion Moriwaki
pilot Walt Niuoand Yamaha-mounted Dan Cashen for second place. After
a tight race, Niuo took the number
two spot. "I blew the start, but I can
stay with him (Brubaker) and win the
money if I get a good start in the next
one," said NillO. Cashen finished a
close third, with Seoular fourth.
In the 600cc Money race, Seoular
again grabbed the holeshot and led
the pack until he was gang-passed
into tum nine by Brubaker and Niuo.
Brubaker proceeded to stretch out a
healthy, 15-second margin over the
battle for second, and went home
$200 richer. ''I'd like to thank my
sponsors Champion Moriwaki, Starfire Racing, Castre and Lockhart,"
said Brubaker afterwards.
Nitto fought Seoular the entire 10
laps and was ahead, barely, at the flag
to finish second. "Scoular bumped
into me at the start and ran me off the
track in the esses," said Niuo.
"We might have bumped," said
Scoular, "but I didn't feel anything."
Scoularand Niuo wereatitagain in
the 600cc Modified Production class
until Scoular managed to lengthen
his lead, which left Nitta dicing with
"The Polish Assassin," Champion
Motorcycles' Dave Sadowski. After a
tight match, Nitta had to settle for
third behind Sadowski at the line.
In 600cc Stock Production, Seoular
took an easy win. Too easy, thought
Nitta, so he filed a protest against
Scoular - after finishing a distant
second. After a lot of controversy,
Scoular's FJ600 was torn down, his
motor was to be compared to Pete
Carroll's. Sponsor Gene Sehroeder
didn't agree that it was a faircomparison, so the parts in question were
impounded. Yamaha Motor Corporation was contacted for specs on the
motor. Seoular lost the protest, but
Schroeder has filed an appeal.
Sadowski rode his TZ250 in a dogfight with Kurt Bickel in F3 (250cc
GP). After a really close race, Sadowski
seized his engine near the end of the
last lap, forfeiting the trophy to Bickel.
Champion Motorcycle's Lee Fleming took his 750cc Interceptor to a
seemingly easy overall win in the
750cc-Open Modified Production,
with time enough to wave to spectators as he ped by. Kevin Dolan took
his new Ninja LO the Open class win
over Tom Fowler.
