Oxley takes painful Ventura victory By Bill Locey VENTURA, CA, JUNE 19 With Kelly Moran away chasing English girls and world titles, and Mike Faria a lastminute scratch, Brad Oxley ad- ded a little variety to the Ventura Scratch main by winning the race for the first time since 1980. Either Moran or Faria had won the first 10 weeks. Last time, a referee' error kept Oxley out of the main. This time, matters took a turn for the worse (turn four, to be exact) as the race ended a lap early on a red flag following a spectacular crash involving Ed Castro and Oxley. Oxley, fifth in track points, went ) around the returning Buddy Robinson in the main. Castro, however, kept it close for the next few laps, waiting for an opportunity to pass. Around tum four, Castro tried to cut underneath, but in tead wheelied into Oxley's rear tire, sending him instantly to the ground. Castro's bike hit the home straight cement wall, bucked him 0[[ and left a dent in the wirefenceaboutl5 feet off the ground. Castro flew an equal elevation and landed flat on his back. Oxley, wracked with pain with what he originally thought was a broken wrist, made a quick recovery, deciding it was only a sprain 10 minutes later. It was worse than that, though - it appears Oxley will have to undergo surgery to repair torn tendons. Castro, cred ited with last place, exited under his own power, slowly. "I've never hit the ground so fast before," said Oxley later. Earlier, Oxley entered the Handicap main unbeaten, but Mike Mazzacane won easily off the 20. Buddy Robinson was second, fol lowed by Oxley. Four Third Division riders were promoted to D-2 and all did fine, especially eight-week veteran Doug Bowers who won his heat, and came in third in the main. Robinson better at Visalia By Bill Locey VISALIA, CA, JUNE 16 "The Flyin' Hawaiian," Buddy Robinson, confined his flying to his motorcycle ,this time as he enjoyed Visalia infinitely -- better than last time as he won the Scratch main for the first time this year. Robinson broke his collarbone back on opening night, May 12. This time Robinson got the gate, beat everyone to turn'two, and cruised uneventfully into the record books. He won seven Saturday night mains last year. New hot guy Rod Sullivan, wi th another strong ride, was second. Zero-yard-line rookie Stu McDaniel was as good as it gets as he won his heat, his semi, and the Handicap main. Robinson, the defending track champ, ran out of laps coming from the 50, and was second. Someti mes, it just takes too long to get around Greg Ayers. Local Rod Pires earned a chance to ride with the good guys next time after winning the Challenger Main off the 20. Farnum takes Visalia circus By Bill Locey VISALIA, CA, JUNE 9 Well, everyone didn't go to the American Speedway Final. Ventura local Walt Farnum went to the Central Valley instead, and he enjoyed the best night ever in his two-wheeled lifeas he won both main events at the fifth Satun;lay night of speedway in Visalia. Farnum, saving the best for last, was second in his Scratch heat to Vic Robledo, taking his first rides of the year. In the semi, Farnum took the runner-up spot again, this time to Rodney Sullivan. In the main, Farnum got a sad gate off the pole, and headed for the outside, chasing the third-place Sullivan, while Dave Hancock and Ron Hardin battled for the lead. Around turn two of the third lap, Farnum made the move of a lifetime, blowing by not only Sullivan, but the leaders as well, surprising everybody. The Handicap main was considerably tamer. Farnum simply outgated Rick Hicks who was right next door on the 20, then quickly got by zero guy Donny Harrell, and that was that. • OUR MICHELIN TIRE WOULD BE HERE. BUT IT'S' OUT CELEBRATING.
