Firestine flows to Colorado win By Larry Johnson COLORADO SPRINGS, CO, jU E IO Albert Firestine, six-time and defending 125cc Pro state champion, has been contesting the 250cc Pro class this season. However, today, there were no 250cc classes cheduled, so he returned to his old class and proved he is sti II Colorado's premier 125cc rider. He smoked the class in both motos. Stacey Cook had two seconds for the' runner-up lot, and Matt Lindsey, back after several weeks off with a broken collarbone, had a fine day, fini hing third overall. The 80cc Experts are always the highlight of the morning program, and today was no exception. In moto one, Barry Carson crashed in turn two, taking down several others with him. jay Martin, Brant McCoy and Darren DeLoach avoided the pile-up and went wheel-to-wheel for the next four laps. On lap five, McCoy outjumped Martin for the lead and Martin immediately crashed after landing, allowing DeLoach to take over second. McCoy and DeLoach finished one-two ahead of Robert Rose. Carson recovered and worked his way to fourth place. Carson gated second behind jay Ruterbories in moto two, and quickly took over the lead, only to have DeLoach pass him. DeLoach's led only lasted one lap before he crashed in the whoops. Carson and McCoy both went by before he could remount.· Two laps later, McCoy jammed by Carson, and on the next lap DeLoach pulled alongside Carson and new past him over the doubles. The three were fender-to-fender when McCoy wrecked coming off the plateau jump. DeLoach and Carson moved into first and second where they finished. McCoy remounted and finished fourth behind Rose. DeLoach earned the overall victory ahead of McCoy, Carson and Rose. Results 32 60 NOV: 1. Tommy Moats (Han): 2. Scott Apple· baum (Han); 3. Brian Diehl (Varni. 60 AM: 1. Smith tops Sacramento Raceway Night MX By "Nuclear" Neukam SACRAMEN'rO, CA, JUNE 8 Yamaha-support rider Rodney Smith bad a break in action in the Nationals and spent the time at Sacramento Raceway Park winning the 125 and 250cc Pro classes in Friday night stadium motocross competition. Hi-Point/Honda of Sacramentosponsored jo jo Wright battled with teammate Larry "Dash" Dashiell for most of the first 250cc Pro moto while Rodney Smith worked his YZ through the pack from a mid-pack start. "Da h" dunked his duckbill in the dirt while leading late in the moto, allowing Wright to motor to the win, unchallenged. Smith led Dashiell to the checkered while jimmy "Kamakazi" Robertson finished fourth aboard his RC Suzuki. Smith had the track dialed by moto two, and showed hi National-caJiber style by working from a third-place start to win by a wide margin and secure the overall. Dashiell and Wright continued their rivalry with some knobby-nicking, wheel-te-wheel dicing, wi th Dashiell taking second. Wright, however, scored second overall with a 1-2 tally. Smith had little trouble in the small I25cc Pro class as he roosted to both moto wins on what appeared to be a very tired YZ125. Reno Kawasaki-sponsored Mike Torres combined a pair of seconds for second overall. DeAnza MX foes By Michael Gillies UN YMEAD, CA, JUNE 10 Team Tamm'sJon Hall (Hon) smoked the Senior Vets class at DeAnza Cycle Park, pUlling a decisive I-I score on the board to clinch the overall ahead of Hondamounted David Hassell. Hassell shot h is open bike into the fir t turn ahead of Hall, uzuki Country's Mike orri and Ray Simmons (Suz). By the end ofIap one, Hall had taken the lead away from HasselJ while Norri wa feeling pressure from Ron Brehm (Yam), who dispatched Simmons to fifth. Hall was bu iIdi ng a comforta ble lead over Hassell, who had aboutthe same cushion over the Brehm/Norris dual. Brehm slipped by Norris at the halfway point, and the order remained through the checkers, making it HaJI, Hassell, Brehm, and Norris. Hassell beat everyone to the first turn again in the second moto, followed closely by Norris, Hoyt Statham (Yam) and Hall. Hall wasted no time by passing all three riders in one lap and building a small but comfortable lead. Norris was holding a strong third over Statham, and keeping Hassell in sight. Brehm was a distant eigbth off the start, and managed to work his way to fifth by the fifth lap, but was unable to catch Statham because of lapped riders. So, the checkered flag saw Hall first, Hassell second, Norris third, and Statham and Brehm fourth and fifth, re pectively. Hall's I-I score was first over Hassell's 2-2, while Norris' 4-3 edged out Brehm's 3-5 for third overall. Results PEE WEE: 1. Troy Haling (Yam); 2. Bret Freeman (Vam); 3. Michael Asplin (Vam).
