Bolte off the track, and ruining his
own line. Pettiford seized the initiative and retook second place. Lee
regained his concentration and pursued Pettiford, passing him on the
last lap for second place. Sass took an
easy win, with Lee in econdandPettiford third.
In Formula I Bolte led the pack
inLO turn one. Dave Old (RG500),
Sass (GPz550), and Rick Orlando
(VF500) chased Bolte, measuring
their chances against the leader.
Old's Suzuki easily had the drive
onto the straightaway, as he passed
Bolte and broke away from the pack
on lap three. Two laps later Sass
picked off Bolte, and set his sights on
Old. Denver's tight 1.7 mile course,
with 13 turns, gave Sass's Kawasaki
equal footing in the turns, but Old's
horsepower proved triumphant. Old
took the win, Sass was second, and
Bolte third.

1984 SERIES
Kyle, Firestine fly
at Colorado MX
By Larry Johnson
LAKEWOOD, CO, JUNE 3
Saturday Practice. 5a!urday Night
camping and Eleven Championship
Grind Prix Events on Sunday.
Terry Kyle and Albert Firestine
continued to dominate the
Open and 250cc Pro classes,
respectively, today at a race
marred by numerous first tum pileups
that kept the amublance crews busier
than anyone else at the track.
Kyle had to wait until the third lap
to overtake Dave Newell in moto one,
then cruised to a l5-second lead and a
win. In moLO two, he went flag-LOflag for another Open Pro sweep. He
had to play bridesmaid to Firestine in
the 250cc Pros in both moLOS, though.
Honda of Denver's Randy Warren
had to borrow a Novice rider's KX250,
but the results were the same as he
rode steadily to a third overall.
Tony Cristelli showed only his
tailpipe to the rest of the 80cc Amateur class as he won both his motos
with ease after grabbing the holeshot
each time and leaving the pack way
behind.
Scott Applebaum enjoyed the same
success in the 60cc Novice class, however he had to work harder for his
results. In moto one, he gated second
behind Brian Diehl only to crash a
few turns later. Diehl held the lead
for twO laps before he also wrecked.
This allowed J.P. Thibodeau to take
the lead which he held for nine laps
on the shortened 60cc track. Applebaum, meanwhile, was working back
through the field and closing Thibodeau's l3-secondlead. With only two
laps remaining, he passed Thibodeau
and stretched out a comfortable margin to the flag. He holeshot moto two
and held off Diehl for the entire race
on his way to a perfect 1-1 day.
