Billy Uhl came out of a lengthy retirement to ride the Mile High enduro. Uhl's ancient Suzuki carried him to fifth 200cc A. Park. A first-lap fall sentZitterkopf from fir t to last place in the first moto. Atkin took the lead from Robert Rodgers on the third lap. As Rodgers' and Dan &rg's CRs battled for second, Zitterkopf was busy picking up lost places. By the seventh lap, he passed tbe dueling Honda and set his sights on the RM. "When I saw Greg brake and I knew he was going to try to drive inside on me, I'd hit my brakes, so he'd bave to almost stop to avoid hitting me," Atkins explained. "I did that a few times, butl was afraid he'd get mad. You don't want anyone that fast mad at you!" On lap II, Zitterkopf got by, and Atkins settled for second, ahead of Berg. Exiting the first turn of the second heat, it was Zitterkopf, Atkins. Rodgers and Berg. It stayed that way until lap II, when Zitterkopf stalled, allowing Atkins by. He restarted before the fighting Hondas came by. "He was only about one straight behind me, and that's nothing with a guy like him," said Atkins. "I just rode as fast as I could for the rest of the race." Atkins took the flag about eight seconds ahead of Zitterkopf. Richard Sands kept his CR far ahead of the other 250cc Pros all day long. Pete Murray's Honda led Taylor Marcell's Kawasaki for the entire (irst moto for second. Murray had second tied up in the second moto until Ian Fitz-Gibbon's YZ caught him on lap six. Wbile Ian held off Murray to the checkers, he could make no progress on Sands. Paul Burvall's pair of second-place finishes earned him the overall in the 250cc Intermediates on his Suzuki. Tim Whitlock's Honda took the lead from Burvall for good on lap three of the first moto. Todd Gibboney's Yamaba led the second moto right from the start, with Burvall right behind. This time Burvall held Whitlock off to the flag for the overall. Results 38 500 PRo: 1. Riel< Atkins (Suz): 2. Greg Zillerkopl (Kawj; 3. Raben Rodgers (Hon). 2SOPRO: 1. Ric:Ilard Sands(Hon); 2. Pata Murray (Hon) 3. Ian Fitz-Gibbon (Yam). 5OOINT: 1. Jim Harris (Yam); 2. Jaaon Coolbaugh Struthers, who rode a near-flawless race on his 200 Kawasaki. Chuck Wells motored his 200 Kawasaki to a second in class and eighth overall. Wells dropped a minute on one section to narrowly miss zeroing the course. "Fast Pete" Keller (Hus) zinged the Open Intermediates from his first minute start. Ritch Thurston (Kaw) was the only rider to not lose any marks on the "B" schedule, but finished third in his class behind Brett Jacofisen (KTM) and Curtis Eames (KTM) in the 125cc Novice division due to some errors in the special test sections.
