which was a far cry from his personal track record of 16.89 set in the summer of 1983. fay paced the way in the Expert. ir:ne trials. whilr Tim Skov did it to the .I un iors wi t hat ime comparable with Ihe [xpel'ls. g-oing- for an 18.79. fay was on a roll when the Experts lined up for their Trophy Dash. National number holders John Wincewicz (Lou Kinish Triumph) and fTank WOI"d III (Adams Cycle Triumph) chased fay all the way to the flag, but could do liule at stopping the former Team Honda rider. fay would go on to dominate the entire evening - the Trophy Dash was just a start. After watching Carr clobber the Junior Dash with ease, Novice contestants III ian and Roose paved the way for a few laps of stirring action. Roose took over on the second lap, but JUSt as in the main, the win would go to lilian's 500 Honda. Hannegan Speedway has been experimenting with a dog-leg section sinceTT has hit a high level of popularity in the Northwest. The section was rough and dry, thanks to the rain, and it was decided by officials to omit theTT section and run a straight quarter-mile oval. Carr LOok the track much LO his liking and won the fastest Junior heat race in preliminaries. Fay did a similar disappearing act in the Expert showdown while Word LOok the semi LO make up the final line-up for the Expert main. Most of the Novices had· yet LO compete on a blue-groove track, and many had their share of problems navigating the track. Those who didn't have problems included III ian and Roose, who were 1-2 going down the straight on the opening lap of Novice competition. Roose took over shortly thereafter, while Billy Taylor (Yam 250), .lack "Bugsy" Booth (CA) and Casper, Wyoming-'s frank Latimer rode in the top five positions. Things were going' smooth in the what was supposed LO be a JO-Iap main until Kawasaki pilot John l:ira, - while trying to maneuver around lappers - took a tumble through the retaining wall, and the race was redflagged. The final finish order was lilian, who worked past Roose, Taylor and Booth in the top four. Latimer and Idaho's Ricky Henson (Yam) finished fifth and sixth LO finalize the Novice main. Idaho's Rodney Reynolds (Hondasupport) led' the start of the Junior main event on his 600 Honda, and it looked like the Boise-based rider would repeat his Boise TT Regional win. WashingLOn's own bright hope Terry Wahl (C-A) had other ideas, and bumped Reynolds out of the lead on lap two and blistered into the lead. Behind them, a pack bauled for third consisting of Frank Crane Jr. (Hon), Carr (W-R) and Californian Danny McDonnell (Hon). Carr moved past Crane into third at the halfway point in the IS-lap main event, and set his sights on the leaders, Wahl and Reynolds. Reynolds proved LO be no match for Carr, as Carr went inside in the loose turf to put a sensational pass on Reynolds. Carr's next target. wasn't so easy. Wahl put Carr into the runner-up position for another six laps when Carr went by and took the win over Wahl, when the CanAm rider sli pped off the groove. Reynolds finished it fine third ahead of Crane, McDonnell, Brian McGonigal (KTM) and Ryan fisher (C-A). Wincewicz launched his 750 off the line after initial troubles gelling the 12 finalists staged for the Experts' 20-lap final. Announcer Fred Boettner got the fans, numbering over '1500, standing in a frenzy when the Experts were unleashed with Wincewicz blurring into turn one ahead of National number 74 Mike Sullivan (Hon) and fay.
