Rogers races to Canyon MX victory By Sandy Berm PHOENIX, AZ, MAY 26 Chris Rogers jetted into first place al the opening round of Canyon Raceway's night MX, as he rode his Kawa aki to a "Swan Song" in the 125cc Novi e SlOck class. Newly promoted Kawasaki rider Mike McMullen held second for several laps but crashed, yielding the position LO Mall Herman and Randy Shipley, who maintained their positions for the first moLO. The second moLO saw Rogers get the holeshot over Honda rider Mike Durham, with Shipley in third. Mall Herman gave into the powers of Chris Jordon, who claimed a second moto fourth. The final gave the overall to the Team Green riders Rogers, Shipley, and Herman. Four checkered flags brought Malcolm Smith-sponsored Robert Mason (Yam) the big payroll at the end of Canyon's first night race. In the first malO of the I25cc Expert race, Mason led going into the first turn, in a [Jurry of yellow, green and red fenders. The vellow dominated as Mason rode the 'first moLO in first place all the way. Following Mason was Kawasaki's Scou Keyes and Yamaha rider Dennis Parker. They collided just past the tower and both took soil samples. Parker was first tocontinue, while Keyes recovered, but fell back to fifth. The close of the first moLO brought Mason, Parker and Keye over the finish with Russ Winkler of Blythe in fourth. In the second moLO, Keyes grabbed the lead and held first place for two laps, as Mason tried to pass the Keyes hold-off. Mason finally drove the Yamaha wedge past Kawasaki-mounted Keyes and held the lead LO the checkered flag. Mason's power played havoc with the 250cc Pros by geLLing holeshot and holding of[ efforts of SCOLL Stallard, Doug Butcher and Eric Kirk, during the 13 laps. Eric Kirk's push easily turned his fourth into second, even though Mason was able LO hold first place, while nur ing a [Jat tire. The second moto found Torn Wiu's holeshot not trong enough for Mason's or Kirk's surge. While WiLL and Kirk battled for first, Mason slipped past both for a big lead. This left Kirk ballie WiLL [or second. Kirk found the outside line sort and went down, allowing Witl. Kawasaki-rider Bobby Lakey, and Stallard to move lip. Kirk charged back for an easy pass over Lakey and Stallard. then on the eighth lap, Kirk went inside and passed Will, making his revival drivea close second behind Mason. In the l25cc Amateur Modified class, Shawn HillOn. got the holeshol. with Tony Gaines on a Kawasaki behind. followed by Billy Carlson and John Moran. Curtis Culbert moved illlo third, crashed, falling back. With Hilton movingoutintoa big lead, Bryan Brunercame up from sevelllh lo take over second. In a sudden seventh lap surge. Garcia gets the gold at Corona nightMX By Nate Rauba CORONA, CA, MAY 25 Kawasaki-mounted Deric Garcia took both motos to win the Mini Beginner 12 and Under class at Corona Raceway to· night, but his wins didn't come easy as he had lo work his way past some tough competition in each race. Pomona Valley Kawasaki rider Wesley Klein put his 60cc machine a few bikelengths ahead of the pack going into the first turn of molO one, while Sunwest Yamaha's Jeb Brock and Garcia came through behind. Klein quickly buil t'a five second lead as Garcia went to work on Brock. It took two laps for Garcia to get by the Yamaha pilot, and even then the position was given up easily when Brock overshot a turn. Garcia wasted no time making up the dista!lce ~Jei.n enjoyed, and just a few turns after passing Brock, he wa pULLing tbe pressure on Klein. For the next two laps, the pair battled for the lead, Garcia occassionally pulling alongside Klein but not able to pull clear. With a litlle over a lap remaining Garcia oUlpowered Klein coming onlo a straight and took the lead away, opening up about a three-and-a-half second cu hion that he held LO the checkers. Klein was second and Brock came home third. In the second moLO Brock grabbed the holeshot with Klein following. Garcia was back in fourth behind Rincon Kawasaki's Jeremy Albrecht. Both Albrecht and Klein were done away with early on the opening lap, and before starting the second goaround Garcia was on Brock and going [or the lead. Brock wouldn't give it up though, and fought off every auempt the Kawasaki rider made LO take his position. It wasn't until near the end of the third lap that Garcia finally broke through Broc.k's defense, and when he did he proceeded to open up a comfortable lead by the fini h.
