and 250cc Pro classes. Daft utilized
cat-like reflexes and determined riding to capture both holeshOls and a
2-1 score, netting him overalls fOrLhe
day and the series. Honda suppon
rider Bryan Abernathy nabbed the
first 125 c Pro mota win after an
intense duel with Daft, but problems
in the second round dropped him to
seventh, enabling Daft to cruise for
the ea y win. 'The Killer" Carroll
Richardson was fierce on the superb
WolfCre kcoursewitha3-2scorefor
second overall for the day and the
series.
The 250cc Pro class resembled a
rollerball affair with Team Green's
Dennis Hawthorne and Carter Yamaha's Kirk pencer locked together for
a two-maLO-long war. The duo were
never more than a few bikelengths·
apan. and both displayed their awesome riding ski II. utilizing every inch
of the cour e. Hawthorne LOpped the
first battle keeping Spencer at bay,
but the second moLO battle saw bar
banging and eventually bar-tangling
action leaving Hawt horne temporarily on the ground and Spencer cruising for I he win. Spencer won the
day's battle but Hawthorne prevailed
over the series war deserving the title
of Texas' best 250cc rider for '84.
Houston's Larry Hughe rode uperbly on his Suzuki for a 6-4 day and a
fourth overall series SpOL
The baule of the Minis col1linued
with Jason Langford and Jason Upshaw going head LO head in each of
their six motos. The Jasons were out
from and flying, posting lap times
comparable to the 125cc Pros. Langford was wide open in the Senior and
LOck cla se with perfea scores, but
pshaw was the upset in the I05cc
class, besti ng Langford in the second
'moLO duel for the overall win. Magnolia's Scott Thomas again posted
LOp finishes all day and was awarded
the runner-up spot in Senior and
SLOck series overalls. Justin Ouo
nailed down several number three
slots for the day and was awarded
runner-up trophy in the I05ec class
behind the invinceable Langford.
Intermediate aaion was plentiful
with all bauling for valuable series
poims. Chad Parker was hot in the
125s, posting perfect scores for the
day, but previous inconsistencies netted hirri third overall for the series.
Mesquite's Keith Foytik calculated
what he had to do, and with a 2-4 day
was awarded he series overall win.
Brent Carrizales carne to the final
round tied for first, but a broken rear
suspender in the first maLO botLOmed
his hopes for an overall victory. Lufkin's Billy Whitely again put in two
hard-charging performances, giving
a 3-3 day and a fourth place eries overall. Pete ullivanrompedhisreliable
Cagiva to fifth for the day and also
the series.
The 250cc Intermediate were again
dominated by a seemingly rocketpowered Paul York. York cruised for
both moLO wins and the LOp series
spot. The "Wally", Rodney Wallace,
again showed his determination forcing his Yamaha LOwards the front to
duel with hotshoe Craig Gullakson
and San Amonio's Paul Chadwick.
Gullakson, with a 2-2 score, neued
second for the day, but 'Nally's calculaLOr and consistent riding netted
him the well-deserved series runnerup spot. Skillful riding and consistency was Chadwick's key LO a fourth
for the day and an earned third place
series finish.

Flores flies at
Baylands night MX
By Mike Vancil
FREMO T, CA. MAY 23
The tar of the show at Baylands was again Tony Flores,
of Sunnyvale, who piloted his
125cc Yamaha to two more vicLOries. Flores, sponsored by Moto-X
Fox. extended his string of first place
finishes to eight, while representatives of his sponsor watched the display of expertise. Flawless starts and
smooth, high-speed auacks on the
course were the method to success as
Flores topped a las of 125 and 250cc
Professionals.
The Veteran Master c1as was invaded by an excited Mike Lane, riding
for Honda of San Jose, who also
enjoyed double-moLO victories. Lane
was pumped by having ju t returned
from a victorious ride at the famed
Widowmaker hillclimb. A motocrosser who show kill in oLberforms
of motorcycle competition is newsworthy in these days of high specialization.
Trophy winners in the 80ccJ unior
class were elated in being able to
wring-out their little mounts to battle each other instead of the course.
Overall winner hannon
ichols
(Yamaha from San Jose) came back
[rom a second in mota one to reverse
the order with moLO one victor Lance
Lucero. Then Mike Watson, on a
Yamaha out of Fremont, was able to

to take third overall [rom Phil Paz
(Kaw).
Sam Nava Jr., his (Han), riding
out of Hayward, kept alive his string
of victories at Baylands (four in a
row) in the 250cc Junior class. This
time Nava did it with smooth, no
spills rides in front all the way.
