Half Mile. It was an evening of action following a silent tribute to J.c. Agajanian, who was laid to rest at Rose Hills the previous Tuesday. Team Honda appeared, set the first-, second- and fifth-fastest times; then vanished before the heats. Disappointing! Bubba Shobert (22.12) was the quickest, then Ricky Graham (22.28) and Don Howard (22.33l. The Experts had their share of Lroubles in the heats, as did the Juniors and Novices earlier. Heat one had Randy Green off the line first but at the end of lap one it was Don Howard l~ading Green and Randy Goss. Goss passed Green but was having problems holding his bike where he wanted it while chasing Howard. On the last lap things got even busier; Fourth-place Pete Hames was coming on very strong along with Mike Inderbitzin, who had started the race way back in traf(ic. Don BaITett unloaded turn one while Goss slowed right down to wind up fifth behind Howard, Hames, Inderbitzin and Green on the last lap. Heat two had a restart when Bud CaJroll fell in turn one, hanging on to his Harley all the way up to the haybales. "I knew they were all behind me and I wasn't going to let go of my protection," said Carroll later. On the restart Carroll was out of the hole first again but Mike Garrison took advantage of Carroll's sliding wide and went (or it, leading all the way. Scott was having troubles too. Like Goss earlier he wasn't staying in the lines he planned on. Being the most experienced Ascot racer on the tracks he plowed on, passing when he got it aimed straight and emerging a close s cond behind the fleet Garrison and followed in by Malt Rozowicz, Je[[ Johnson and Mike Mannig. Minnig got the perfect shot off the line in the semi. followed by Goss, Eddie San Ramon and Mike Gilkey. Carroll retired when most of the spokes stripped off his rear hub. Goss, still having problems, won but scratched from the main. The Honda-less Trophy Dash consisted o( Howard, Gary Scott, Garrison and Hames. Garrison was into the south turn first, followed by Hames, Howard and Scott. (Gary was still having problems and would change tires before the main.) Hames and Howard got by Garrison and then went at it. They came across the finish line so close together the upstairs scorers couldn't call it and the riders were just looking at each other wondering. The line officials called it for Hames and he accepted the trophy from Cycle Rider of Hawthorne and thanked his major sponsor, Iveco Diesel, and his tuner Jack Dannenburg. After two jumped starts the Expert main was on. Halfway lhrough turn two Hames went into a spectacular tankslapper. He didn't [all but How'
