elSey McCoy bested the Open ImerIllt"diate class with two-mota wins on board his Honda. KTM rider Shawn Davis chased M Coy to the checkers with FulLOn Tidwell pu hing his Honda to third overall. Honda pilot Loren Pochlrow ki LOpped the 250cc Novicecomest with a 2-1 ,core. Traev Hradl danced his Yamaha to the second-place overall position with Andy Barth rounding out the LOp three on his Yamaha. Maico master Jon Miller continued hi domination of the Vel Expert cia s as he swept both moLOS from a LOugh field of Veteran racers. Tom White of White Bros. fame chased Miller to the checkers in each mota but had to ellie for the runner-up slot at da ys end. Results Tim Slayton (22s) pursues two lapped riders at Corona. APR. 27 Rincon Kawa aki's Paul Pitzonka and Tim SiJkwood (Hon) traded wins in Open ovice compeli lion a t Corona Raceway rr- 34 LOnight with PiLZonka gelling the allimportant second mota vicLOry to take the overall win. Pitzonka dove underneath Silkwood in the first turn to take the lead in mota one, and Jim Rader (Han) got by Husqvarna-mounted Dudley Prall on the opening lap LO make it a three-way ballie for the lead. At the beginning of lap two. Rader cut under Silkwood in a turn only LO faJ! a hart distance later in the next corner. Silkwood was too close to miss the fallen bike and tried using it for traction, but he also went down. Pitzonka enjoyed a healthy lead for a couple of laps until Rader, who had restarted first. and Silkwood closed the gap with two laps remaining. Rader was the first to apply pressure LO Pitzonka but was shutoff in a turn and killed his engine, allowing Silkwood to go by. Silkwood kept the pre sure on though and passed Pitzonka before they completed the circui l. Silkwood went on unchallenged to the checkers. wi th Pitzonka second and Rader third. Again, in the second moto, Silkwood led the start only to have Pitzonka steal the lead in the first turn. Pitzonka was pressured for most of the first lap until Silkwood went down, then once again was in command with a good lead. Silkwood made up the distance in a few laps, though. and was close again at midmoLO, but Pitzonka held him off all the way to the checkered flag to take the win and first overall. Best Ever Termite-sponsored Kevin Bussey took two classes tonight, first winning the Mini Novice class, then stepping off the 80 and on LO a 60 to win the Pee Wee 10 and Older class. Bussey shot into the lead of the first Pee Wee moLO ahead of PJ I's Jacob Swain (Kaw), Ben Phalen (Kaw), and Jarrell Austin (Kaw). Swain passed on the first lap, was repassed, then got by briefly once again before Bussey took control. Swain hounded Bussey for most of the race until they tarted lapping slower riders. That allowed Bussey LO gain some ground and finish a few seconds ahead of Swain. MOLO two looked to be a repeat of the first as Swain and Bussey went inLO turn one side by side. wain came out of the corner with the lead. but Bussey passed him in the second turn then proceeded LO open up a little distance. Throughoul the mala Bussey maintained a comfortable lead, and it wasn't until the final lap lhat Swain managed to close in. Dymond sparkles at Saddleback Spring Classic By Terry Whytal ORANGE, CA, APR. 21 Factory Husqvarna pilot Mickey Dymond captured the top honors in the 250cc Pro class at the second round of the annual Saddleback Spring Classic. Dymond traded moLO wins with an improving Honda rider, Ed Arnel. Arnet powered LO the first-moLO win with Dymond trailing fortherunnerup position. Round two action saw a reverse of the first moLO finish giving Dymond the overall victory. Suzuki rider Doug O'Donnell finished a strong third against the local field with Yamahamounted Kurt Henricksen picking up fourth. APR. 21 Chad McCracken started off the 80cc Senior shortlrack heat leading the first lap, only to fall and see Mike Hale take over for the win. COll Williams took the lead in the main, followed by McCracken and Hale. Hale took over second going down the backstraight on lap one, then passed Williams on the second lap by gelling inside in turn one. On Ule third lap, Hale slid down coming out of the number two corner, and Williams took over to lead Trace Polson and McCracken for the next five laps. Polson got a good drive off the number four corner on the last lap to take the flag for the win. Williams finished second only half a wheel behind, and third place went LO McCracken, with Hale in fourth. The 250cc Junior short track events ran without spills, with fast heat wins going to Alan Powers and Poison. Polson got the holeshot in the main. but Powers took over the lead going down the back chute. After going into the first corner in fifth place, Willie McCoy passed Tommy Brooks and Roberts on the back side of the track LO run third. On lap four, McCoy LOok the insidecomingoutof lLIrn two LO take over econd from Polson. McCoy then chased Powers, but was unable to get by him until lhe last corner of the last lap, when both leaders came up on a lapped rider. McCoy took the outside and Powers tried the inside. Powers hit loose dirt on the corner while McCoy got a drive off the outside and took the win by inches. SCOll Scherb took the early lead in the Open Senior short track main followed by Gary Kidd, Charlie Orr and Terry P~vey. Kidd's bikequi't o~ 'dle first lap and Poovey passed Orr in turn three LO move inLO second place. On lap two. Poovey passed Scherbon the outside for the lead. Lapfoursaw Orr pass cherb for second with a move to the outside on turn four. The riders then held positions until lap seven. when the race had to be red flagged. An accidenl was caused by Kenny Tolbert. in sixth po ition. who got sideways coming out of turn two. The riders behind him were riding a close they couldn't see him going down. nor could they avoid hilling him, the fence, or each other. With five riders down. the race was called at the end of six laps. The win went LO Poovey. followed by Orr. cherb and RUSlY Gourley. In the l25ccTTrace. Bobby Shaw got a chance LO study the style of his protege Ed Meyer as he watched Meyer's rear fender from start to finish. Shaw tried on every corner for a pass, using every available line, but Meyer continued to hold him off, all the way LO the flag. The Open Junior TT main also had LO be red flagged at the end of lap one as the two leaders, Mike Carroll and Kirk Tyer. locked handlebars and went down in the right hand turn. Both riders were somewhat shaken up, but able to make the restart afler a lillie handlebar straightening by their pit crew. Tyer pulled into second on the restart. behind Dean Drozd, with Kerry Wood coming out in third and Carroll fourth. David Hatcher and Carroll wapped positions on every lap, and afler Wood dropped out with a flat tire, Hatcher moved up LO third place, with Carroll fourth. Atthe finish. Wynne smokes Intermediates at Spillway By Jim Pluhar SANTA MARIA, CA, APR. 22 Shawn Wynne grabbed back to back wins in the 125cc Intermediate today at Spillway Park to capture his division at the Easter special. Sue Fish, a well known lady rider from Santa Barbara, was off the pace all day and had to sellie for last in her class after a fall in the fourth lap of the second moLO. Paul Blomquesttook eight laps to gain the lead in the first moto for the I25cc Junior division but dominated in the second moLO LO gain the victory.
