Zitterkopf, Turner head Ky'e F'eming Memoria'MX at Firebird By John Burrus PHOENIX, AZ, APR. 21-22 Kawasaki-mounted. Sinasalo's Greg Zitterkopf and Cagiva's hotshoe "Radical" Ron Turner were top Pros at the second annual Kyle Fleming Memorial motocross at Firebird Raceway in Phoenix. This Easter weekend race was a memorial event in honor of team Suzuki's Mini stars Kyle Fleming, Bruce Bunch and Rick Hemme, who were tragically killed in an auto accident following the Minicycle Grand National Championship in Ponca City two years ago. Today's race was a huge success with over 60 sponsors and nearly 300 racers entered. In the Open Expert competition, there was a tough duel between Zitterkopf and Bryan Hayes. Zitterkopf took an early lead in the first moto but was heavily pursued by Hayes. Hayes stayed close to the Kawasaki pilot but began to fade near the end of the race. Richard Sands started to pressure Hayes during the last few laps and eventually took control of the second spot. Zitterkopf easi Iy took the win ahead of Sands and Hayes. Zitterkopf had it even easier in the second moto leading from start to finish without a hitch. This time Hayes managed to hold onto second long enough to capture second overall. Jame George. who placed fourth in the first moto, finished third in the second round for third overall. Turner kept busy today topping both the 125 c and 250cc Expert class. In the 125 race, Turner had a bad start, while Troy Blake ran off with the holeshol. Turner spent the whole moto picking h'is way through traHic and finally ended up in third behind local favorite Drey Dircks. The Cagiva pilot made up for his first moto start in the second round with the holeshot and had a clear shot at the checkered £lag. Turner finished 14 seconds ahead of secondplace finisher Dircks. Blake dropped out of the race handing Robert Mason third. The first 250cc Expert moto was red £lagged ha Ifway through the moto after a first turn pile-up, and a series of bad crashes a few laps later. The restart saw Turner again turning in the fastest lap times during the moto taking the win ahead of Dircks and Mason. Turner took a fair start in the second moto but had the lead by the Poster 'Special! end of the first lap. He opened up a large advantage which Turner put to good use: With only a few laps remaining, Turner's rear brake failed. but he had enough insurance to take the win. Dircks again finished second while Ron Watmore settled in third. $10 Value For Only $5 Jenssen jams at Training Whee's enduro ATV Ne.s is pI••d to ofI"lhe....eiti.... &.nd-ditiotl, ATY Actioa Pnt." absolutely fr. . with ",". ,-.cripli-. gift '-.cripliaa.1IlI , . _.... By Jim Bowman GEORGETOW ,CA, APR. 15 iii" pest.,. .,. 1iYio.,_ Honda-mounted Eric Jenssen led his Napa Valley Climbers club teammates to the overall and a couple of class win at the District 36 Training Wheels family enduro today. Jenssen finished with a score of zero minutes lost, to tie with David Vossler, teammate Mark Locey, Peter Prichard and Doug Hammes. Jenssen was awarded the overall win, though, with his score of [our seconds. Another of Jenssen's teammates Bill Bulotti won the Old Timer class with the top score of one point. While the Sportsman class riders were counting seconds, the wives of the portsman riders took to the trai Is to count minutes. The trails were challenging to the Powder Puff class riders, and it was no surpri e when Linda Dart emerged at the head of her class after losing one point on the 58-mile course. Linda has won her class at other family enduros and also repeated another of her past ad1ievements by winning the class A Husband/Wife team trophy with husband Bill. Taking the class B Husband/Wife team trophy was the second place Power PuH rider Julie Duffek and her boyfriend Scott Taggart, who has been terrorizing the B class at the District 36 sportsman enduros lately. Peggy Nichols was the third place Po~der Puff rider with eight points, five points behind Duffek and six points ahead of Carol Bowman. Duane and Paulette Purdue claimed the class C Husband/Wife team trophy with the combined score of 39. The mixture of fairly tight trails and easy fireroads were used by not only the wives and sportsman, but the children as well. Jason Howe won the age 11-13 class by a full minute over Paul Cameron, who was two minutes ahead of Steve Swanson. Cameron still wen't home with a first pia e trophy though, as he and father Fred earned the class A Parent/Child team brass. There were four entries in the age 7-10 class and they all gave it their be t to finish. With 34 points, winner Teddy Harmon found the course a little challenging, and Damien Shanoian found it equally diHicult on his way to the runner-up honors with a score just 22 econds lower. Patrick Cope can be proud of surviving 385 points worth of eHort to reach the fini h line and his fini her pins. _ p--_.._ Coupon Completely. ..--_..._-_._------------------------._--------Fill Out Name Address _-,City c: ,. e State Zip _ o ENTER my subscription/renewal at $5 and send me a FREE posterI I want the 0 Three-Wheeler 0 Odyssey 0 Race Kart poster. o Send a gift subscription at $5'to; Name Address _ City State Zip _ _---'-_ And wilh that gift send 0 me/ 0 them a FREE poster!
