"Hollywood" Holley claims Canadian Supercross By Larry Huffman EDMONTON, ALBERTA, CANADA, MAY 6 Jim "Hollywood" Holley scored his first Supercross victory on a cold blustery afternoon in Edmonton'~Commonwealth Stadium at the first annual Laball's Commonwealth Supercross before a crowd estimated at 15,000. However, Holley acknowledged Lhat he really won Lhe event in his heat race, when he and 17-year-old Suzuki whiz kid Rick Ryan brought the crowd to its feet in some of the most exciting handlebar-to-handlebar racing seen in a long time. Holley and Ryan set Lhe fastest heat of the day and forced each other to make several double jumps set throughout the over five-eighths mile track. Ross Pederson, mounted on a uzuki Canada RM250, was not pushed and, therefore, never had to extend himself over thedoublejumps. And that made the difference in Lhe main event. Holley, mounted on a stock Canadian YZ250 Yamaha prepared by Mike Bell's former mechanic Dave Osterman, chased Pederson after the Canadian Champ pulled 0[[ what some of the other American riders called a "controversial" holeshot. According to Osterman, "The <:;anadian officials moved the American riders back from the fellow who pulled the start gate lever, while allowing Ross to get a clear shot at him. Ross knew when the gate was going to drop and, by the first turn, had a 10 bike lead." Another Yank favorite, Donnie Cantaloupi, was involved in a firstturn crash and started dead last, fighting his way up to fifth by the checkered flag. Pederson roared 0[[ to a lead which at times was as great as six seconds. But Holley was unrelenting in his pursuit, gaining precious Lime on the Canadian over Lhe double jumps. "I let Ross have his race," said Holley afterwards. "I let him goout; I wanted to see what pace he was running. But once I passed him and saw he wasn't double-jumping, I said 'Alright!' I knew I had it then'" After the race, Pederson admilled he was far too tentativewith the lead. "I learned a lot," said the six foot, lBO-lb. Pederson. "I had a big lead and I was just too cautious with it. Jim doubled and I didn't. After he passed me I fell apart and that cost me the race." Peterson made a valiant allemptto regain the lead from Holley, at one point slamming his machine into the side of Holley's, "I knew he was coming at me," said Holley, "and I just dug my foot into the ground and braced myself."Thecrowd went crazy. Pederson then took a spill on a set of double jumps which allowed Ryan to slip by into second place. lroni- THE OILY DIE THITCII mp SHDEBERT••• THEBELLM-2 Bell congratulates Bubba Shobert for his May 5th/6th double-header victory, claiming both Mile and Short Track honors at the 25th Anniversary San Jose Mile, Bubba's helmet?
