That's gonna be miner' Wynne, But'er battle at SpillwayMX By Jim Pluhar SANTA MARIA, CA, MAY 6 Shawn Wynne of Lompoc and Phil Butler of Santa Maria had a start to fini h duel in both motos at Sunday's Spillway 30 Park motocross. Racing in the 125cc Intermediate division, Wynne and Butler grabbed tbe spotlight when the only Pro, Gary Riekki of Arroyo Grande, was sidelined in lap 10 ofthe fir t event with a blown engine. Wynne passed Butler on lap five of the first molO, and ran second 10 Riekki until Riekki's demise on the 10th circuit of the riverbed facility. In the second go around for the I25s Wynne worked his way from sixth place on lap one 10 second place on lap three, only to drop back after a fall on the fourth lap. By the end of the event Wynne was within a bike- ' length of Butler for the victory, but couldn't make the pass. Wynne still took the class win for the day with a IOtal of 3 points, to 4 for Butler. Atascadero's Craig Lane, an Open Intermediate, battled 250cc Pro Paul Villa of San Luis Obispo for the overaJl win in the. combined 250cc Open events. Villa managed 10 beat· Lane but not without some close racing between the two. Lane suffered problems with the back wheel of his Honda on the fifth lap of his second molO and had 10 head for the pits with no chance of a strong finish for the day. Mike Knapp of Santa Barbara finished second to Villa in both events to ga in victory in the 250cc lntermediate class. In the 80cc Junior division. jeff Orth of Carpenteria scored back-toback victories, as did J .R. Cecchetti of Arroyo Grande in the 80cc Novice class. Results 80 NOV: 1. J.R. Cecchelli (Yem); 2. APR. 29 Kawasaki-mounted Bobby Moore endured high winds, severe dust and Yamaha's Eddie Hicks' challenges to capture California Racing Club's fir t-place laurels in the 80cc Modified Expert class at Edwards Air Force Base MX. Moore and Hicks are certainly no strangers when it comes to knockdown-drag-out duels in Miniwarfare around the states, and today they met in the Mojave desert and produced some fierce racing. Hicks. though, was the undisputed winner in the first moto turning lap time only five seconds slower than the Open Pros. Moore stayed lose and finished second. The second moto was much closer when Moore jumped into the lead and Hicks closely followed. However, Hicks' too aggresive riding style caused him to bite the dust and gave Moore a sl ight advantage. Hicks tried to make a comeback, but Moore's consistent fa t pace was just too much for Hicks to handle. Moore took the second moto win and overall, while Hicks had to settle for second. A different type of racing format was used for a few classes because some had so many riders entered. The system was; a certain percentage of top riders from each division were placed in a third, deciding moto. Two of the classes to use thi format were the 125cc Beginner and Novice divisions. In the I25cc Beginner class, Aaron Lewis claimed the win. In all three motos, Lewis had to make up for mediocre starts before the checkered. Lewis' closest competitor was Howard Mammes, who faired considerably better in the third moto than he had during the first two motos to cap- ture second. Jody Tapia had a fine rick finishing Ihird. There were three divisions in the 125cc Novice class and the winners "'ere Jeff Mabery, jim Ryder and Jeff Capt. These three and many other top qualifiers met for the final third moto to determine the fa te t rider. When the gate dropped, cott Davies tole the holeshot with Bill Waitman in hot pursuit. Capt and Doug Allen were close behind. During the second lap, Davie and Waltman tangled and fell to the ba k of the pack. Capt moved into first and Allen followed. Thetwofoughtne k·n'neck. then AI len took command of the lead for the second half of the race. But, on the final lap, Capt out-accelerated past Allen to take ov r the lead and held on for the win. Action was tight in the 500cc Pro class, and it all started wi th the stan of the fir t moto when Yamahamounted Rick Maki blitzed into the lead ahead of two more Yamaha riders Mark White and Pete Snorteland. Tim Worth, on a Honda. cruised in fourth. Maki quickly jumped to a 20second lead, while Wonh started to hound SnoneLand. Snoneland decided to get on the gas and found his way into the lead. norte land took the win ahead of Worth, who passed Maki on the last lap. White got the jump for the second moto, while Snoneland cha ed. A few laps later. norteland slipped by andtookthech~~~fi~t.Worili again settled in second after passing White near the end of the moto. White outwits Experts at CanyonMX By Sandy Berm PHOENIX, AZ, APR. 29 Bobby White, aboard a Honda, kept his cool when the going got tough, and it paid off with a win in the 250cc Expert class at Canyon Raceway. Chappy Blose, who has many victories under his kidney belt at Canyon, almost added another win, but a second moto crash and a come-from-behind combination didn't add up to another victory. In the first moLO, Blose jammed into tbe lead followed by Hondamounted Eric Kirk and Rick Nagle, also piloting a Honda. For the next 13 laps. the struggle over second was high-strung, wh ile Blose avoided the fraws with a laJ'ge lead. White became involved halfway through the race and put in a strong charge with a few laps remaining. White slipped into third then set after Kirk. Kirk. who was pe tered by an injured shoulder, surrendered econd to White a few turns before the finish. Blose took the win ahead of White, Kirk and Nagle. Honda rider Doug Butcher pocketed the noleshot for the start of the econd moto, while Blose pushed hard in second. Kirk and White were glued to Blose's rear fender. before theKawasakipilotcra hedrightafter stealing the lead. Butcher reclaimed the lOp spot but began feel ing heavy pressure from White, who slipped by Kirk a little earlier. Butcher finally gave in and let White by, as did Kirk. White look advantage of Kirk's ailing shoulder and enlarged hi lead. Meanwhile, Blo e made up lost ground and passed Butcher. With three laps to go, Blose dove inside Kirk Lhrough "In anity Ridge" and took control of second. Blose set after White, but While maintained hi composure and captured the win. Blose, after a fine ride. ettled for second and second overall. Kirk survived a Late-moto fall and held on for third. Yamaha rider Dave Townsend wrapped up twO c1as es with four first-place victories to win th 125cc and 250cc to k Amateur classes. Townsend's best moto came during the second round of the I25cc class, when he stole the holeshot and led from start to finish. john Humphrey had control of the econd position until a derailed chain ended his day.
