Walker scores in Sweetheart hare scrambles By Diane Bell SUPERSTITIO ~ 0 c: « 3: 0 :Ie en e > c: > :Ie CD 0 .... 0 MTN.,CA,MAY6 ..q-< 00 :Ie 11. In a close-fought hallIe, Steve Walker had his first overall win at AMA/D-38's Sweetheart hare scrambles, "I woke up this morning feeling real good," Walker said. "And when they told me I was 30 seconds behind Todd (Kennedy) on the third loop, I gassed it." Leading the race to the second check wa Open rider Leon LivingSLOn who got an eyeful as one of the Sweethearts was topless. Missing the view was 250cc rider Todd Kennedy who LOok the lead in the first loop and kept it for the next two laps. At home check on the first loop, Open rider Steve Basin ran third on his Yamaha. He was followed by another Open rider Walker on his new 250cc Cagiva. Mall Hope ran next on his 250cc Yamaha with 125cc Cagivamounted Ed Foland. On the second loop, Kennedy was still leading the race, while Walker moved into second. Livingston came through and retired the borrowed bike he was riding because it wasn't set up for his riding style. Foland took over fourth with 250cc Expert Alan Seaman in fifth. Kennedy and Walker still hung onto first and second on the third loop. Foland came through third to a nearly deserted pit, because his pit crew had responded LO a false message that he was down on Lhe course. This did nOI hurt his finish though, Foland ended up third overall, first 125. Amateur 250cc rider Bryan Hart took over the fourth overall position. "It was a wide open, an awfully fast course," said Hart. "I had fun!" Open rider Bruce Smith passed Basin 10 take over fifth-place overall and first Open rider. Vet Expert Ed Mundy moved into seventh on his Suzuki. During the fourth loop, Walker finally passed Kennedy for the lead. "I passed Kennedy for the first time about halfway through the last loop," said Walker. "We ballled back and forth four or five times. Then we raced LO the last road crossing, and I beat him LO it and that was the last I saw of him." Kennedy finished the race second overall and second 250. Hart finished third 250, first Amateur in fifth overall. In the 125ccrace, Foland took first. Amateur Ron Desrosiers on his KTM rode to second 125cc and Expert Roy Basin, coming off a shoulder injury, finished third. Results OPEN EX: 1. Bruce Smith (Yam): 2. Steve Besin (Yam); 3. O'l ...... G(') C'J >- ~ ::E Suzuki-mounted Dale Zlock won the District 27 860cc Modified Production class during the second round of the Can-Am Series in Seattle. Holden smokes Seattle RR By Bruce Scholten SEATTLE. "V A, APR. 29 "I really enjoy the competition, racing against Robert Holden. He's tough, I have to ride hard, and I'm very impressed with him," commented Clarke-Simpkins Honda's teve Dick afler winning the Formula One race . in round two of the Can-Am series. That was only one race of the three in which the two speedsters met headto-head for some serious racing. The Can-Am series. run with the AMA District 27 Seattle road race LOday, saw Holden taking a pair of wins. Holden won both the 750cc Production and the 600cc Modified Production classes. followed across the line both times by Dick. This Can-Am class was combined with the regular D-27 600cc Mod Production class. and there was some confusion as LO whether or not Lee Cochran's NESRA Yamaha thumper was entered for Can-Am points. However. there was no mistaking the fact that he showed everyone the way around the track and was first 10 the checkered flag. After a long, seven year absence, it was nice to have Gordon Rice back. Rice commented Ihat Vintage class racing "could bring a lot of people who are illlerested in classic motorcvcles out 10 the track. And when reople see that we're not really out to risk our bodies or our mOLOrcycles, maybe more retired racers will get those old bikes out here." The footpeg fell off Rice's B-50 BSA 500 while running down the frontstraight. but he carried on to a win. ahead of the Nonons of Gary Sheving, and Norm Traver, who finished third. The racers on hand were greatly saddened by the tragic accident of fellow racer Many Wilkison, who died today. Results CAN·AM RACING FORMULA 1: 1. Stave Dick (Han); 2. Dala Franklin (Yam); 3. Hopper handles SHRMX By Sally Sideliner BRE 'TWOOD, CA, APR. 29 George Hopper of Mallots Honda took the lead in the 250cc Pro class, and although he held itto the checkered flag, it wasn't an easy race. Craig Christain's Richmond Yamaha quickly found a way around Donny Anderson and had Hopper in sight. Hopper and Christain began to run from the pack, but Christain was never able to make the pass for first. Hopper holeshot moto two and once again found Christain his only threat, but never let him by. The Open Pros started out with John Wells in the lead and Jerry Brandt second. Dan Baker pulled into third, then passed Brandl. Brandt wouldn't give up though, and the two went back and forth until Brandt stalled his bike. Brandt restarted and again caught up to Baker. When Baker made an error, Brandt passed for second. Brandt came back to win the second maLO, with Wells a close second. Derrick Luchessi led the I25cc Pros with Kimo Casey, aboard a Kawasaki from Contra Costa Honda, and Craig Christain on his heels. Casey passed Luchessi on an outside berm, but Luchessi regained his position on the next turn. Casey passed again on lap three then broke away from the others, as Christain got by Luchessi on the next lap. Then the cloud of misfortune struck, taking out third place Luchessi with a seized engine. On the next lap, Dennis Hannel pulled off with the same problem. The problem continued, as Casey put his hand up, and pulled off with engine problems, as Christain gladly took the checker. Casey took the lead in mota two with Christain and Mike Minjares on his rear wheel. Christain kept the pressure on until he went over a berm, and Casey apparently had an easy win. But Christain mounted a hard charge, and when Casey clipped a bump on the track edge, Christain was right ther~ LO take the lead and 27
