The start of Willow Springs' 600cc Box Stock class was a bit tight. Yamaha pilot Scott Johnson won. Vreeke does it again at Willow By Lori Tyson ROSAMOND, CA, MAY 6 Jim Vreeke took his third straight victory in the Willow Springs/American Road Racing Association Superbike Ser- • 26 ies. "I did it again, huh?" said the Ontario Moto-tech!ND!Arai-sponsored rider casually. "I just wish I had more horsepower." Suzuki-mounted Jay Tanner led off the line, but by the second lap, Vreeke had taken the lead. Despite theeHorts of Tanner, Vreeke held the top spot the remainder of the race. ''I'll get him next time," said Tanner afterwards, "The bike started to slide out in turn four and that's when he was able to pull away from me." Seaweed Kawasaki's Earl RoloH, piloting his Production 750 GPz with Dun lop Eli te street tires, challenged Tanner for second, but had to settle for a third-place finish. ''I'll have my real bike nexttime and I'll beat him," stated RoloH. Fourth place was hardfought by Larry Shorts, who made up lots of time after a bad start, Chris Mencher, Temple City Kawasaki's Bob Reinen, JeHTutlobene and 500cc Honda-mounted Frank Mazur. They finished very closely in that order. Reinen won the 750cc Production race after being stalked by RoioH for eight laps. Just as Roloff prepared to make his move in the last lap, his machine's boltom end went south, making Reinen a happy winner. Westlake Suzuki's Chris Crowell, Marty Sharpe, Jeff Gehrs and Kopecky Corporation's Kenny Kopecky diced for third, and, with Roloff out, the prize was sweetened to the second place trophy. Crowell took it over Sharpe. One of the most exciting races of the day was the 600cc Production Trophy Dash. When 47 riders signed up for the 600cc Production class, race promoter Earl Smith, always concerned for the safety of his riders, decKied to divide it into two races, with the top six from each having a chance for the trophy in a four-lap dash at the end of the day. Chris McNellis led off the line followed by ScOlt Johnson, Kopecky, Roloff, Tony Mathews and Gary Tatsumi. By lap two Johnson grabbed the lead. Just as RoloH took the lead exiting turn two, he missed a shift entering turn three and drove oH the track. By the time he rejoined the race, he was dead last. But he dazzled everyone as he worked his way to fifth place in half a lap, and kept up a blistering pace to retake the lead in turn three of the fourth and final lap, leaving leaders Johnsonand Kopecky stunned. Roloff took the win by less than a wheel over Johnson, with Kopecky clo e behind in third. Results F2: 1. Steve Biganski (Yam); 2. Bob DeWin (Vam); 3. James Henderson (Yam). 600 55: 1. Brooks unbeatable at DeAnza .MX By Michael Gillies SUNNYMEAD, CA, MA Y 6 Yamaha moumed Mike Brooks combined two fine rides today in DeAnza's Mini Novice class to come away with the first place lrophy. Larry Laye (Yam) provided Brooks with most of his competition lhroughout lheday, but a crash in the second molO caused a DNF. Brook reached the first turn right behind today's only Intetmediale, Mike Sandoval (Kaw). John Burr Cycles' Jerry Litteral (Yam)and Pierre Laquerre (Suz) were dicing over second wilh Dennis Urban (Yam) watching from behind. By the third lap, Brooks settled down to a smoolh, consistant pace wilh Laye, who was a dislant seventh off the start, about five seconds behind. The real racing was go.ing on a few seconds further back as Laquerre, Litleral, and Urban were trading positions every lap. Laye did a fine job of keeping up 10 Brooks, but lapped rides prevented him from making a serious challenge. So, the checkered flag saw Brooks firsl, and Laye second, wilh Litteral winning the heated battle for third. Orban was the first Novice up the hill in molO two, with Brooks, Laye, and Allan Brehm, on a Yamaha of Redlands-sponsored Yamaha, in hot pursuit. By the end of the first lap, Laye haddisplaced rban as the leader, with Brooks getling by a lap later. Halfway through the second lap, Laye went down hard Urban was riding wide open lhis molO 10 keep Litteral in lhird, which he did, cruising lhrough the checkers in second behind Brooks. Brooks' I-I score was first over Urban's 4-2, while Lilleral landed lhird with a 3-3. Results PEE WEE: 1. Jon Pauls (Vam); 2. Billy Valko (Yam): 3. Robert Allen Cole (Vaml. DIV II: 1.
