Horban, Harsha, Word blitz Winningham Memorial ST < By Clay Light CORVALLIS, OR, MAR. 31 The tribute race to the late Richard Winningham had Benton County Fairgrounds packed to the rafters in the This Fantic rieler negotiates a rocky stream crossing during Fresno's Pacific International Trials Society event in Prather. Dillon hops to Jackrabbit 100 win By Steve Hammer . GRANDVIEW, 10, MAR. 25 Ron Dillon pushed his 250 KTM into first overall in the 12th annual Jackrabbit 100 Hare and Hound, his second 40 consecutive win. Dillon had his hands full, however, as it was anybocly's race for the £irst65 miles, and several of the top contenders struggled with crashes, £Iats and water problems. When the banner dropped, Brad Strong, Utah's top desert racer, £lew his 500 Husky past the bomb with the lead. Right behind was a screaming pack of 2505, including Steve Henry (KTM), Howard Pickett (Yam), Ron Wehr (Yam), and BobCarlberK(Hus). The first loop was 38 miles, and very rough. Strong and Pickett were fighting for first, with Strong hitting the pits about one minute ahead of Pickett. At this point, problems began for both riders, with Strong losing the lead due to a slow pit stop (he had to gas himself), and Pickett hitting a rock and getting a rear £Iat. Despite the £Iat, Pickett charged right out of the pits with a 30 second lead over Strong. With a flat tire there was no way Pickett could hold off Strong, and about five miles into the second loop, Pickett dropped back into second with Strong regain inK the lead. Brad Strong was in good shape with a secure lead until he hit the first of four water crossings. Strong chugged across the first one, but his bike drank a little water, and quite midway up the rocky, slimy uphill on the other side. Strong watched helplessly as Dillon and Harpham, roared by. Finally, Strong's bike restarted, and he joined the fray in third. Dillion and Harpham continued to battle for the last 15 miles, but the final order was Dillon, Harpham, and Strong. Curt Dice rolled in fourth, and Ron Wehr restarted his YZ to pull fifth overall. Reed Bright sliced his 250 KTM through the pack to capture sixth. Results OVERALL: ,. Ron Dillon (250 KTM); 2. Head(s) Up at Jose Basin trial By Tim Walker PRATHER, CA, APR. 8 Fresno's Pacific International Trials Society held its first event in the Jose Basin today and Montesa-mounted Scon Head came away with the big win. A prime contender for the upcoming Nationals, Head clearly dominatedon this National caliber/Robin Crockett-prepped layout event. Matt Pritchard and Dan Dixon tied at 68 for second, but Pritchard wound up second overall with three more total cleans over Dixon, 4-1. Bryan Borror looks ready to transfer to Amateur status with a fine ride in the Novice class today, dropping only 41 points with 12 cleans to take the win. Mark Ferguson took second only two points ahead of Randy Dolenec. Ed Alari dominated the Senior B class after steadily improving rides each week. Second went to Jim Carlson while Allan Ralls settled for third. fourth of five Oregon Indoor short track races. AMA Junior Robert Horban took the Open Pro main with AMA Experts Jeffrey Harsha and Frank Word III getting the 250cc Pro and 250cc A laurels. The race paid honor to Winningham, an AMA Expert who won many, man y Open Pro mains here in Corvallis. Winningham died nearly a year ago in a tragic accident en routefrom a Nationalto his home in Waldport. Mr. and Mrs. Winningham still attend many of the races and still consider racing an important part of their live. Harsha appeared to be back on form after a couple of dismal performances the last few races, and led the start of the 250cc A main event. Word. Bob Ingel (Kaw), Robbie Blagg (CA), and Greg Reynard (Hon) followed on the opening lap until Harsha fell victim to a "northern Oregon soil sample", putting Word's Adams CycleSupply/Simpson Yamaha into the lead. Ingel, AMA Junior Clay Clark (Bul) and Blagg continued to squabble over third, a distance behind big guns Word and Ingel. Clark and Blagg got too close to each other once, then again the very next lap, with both going down. Dan Nelson moved into third position at the checkered £lag. The most chaotic main of the evening was the Open A main event. These boys just couldn't seem to get their timing down and took many tries to get staged. Once everything settled down, AMA Novice Marty Zirbel (Chaney's Auto-sponsored Yamaha) took the lead in what was to be a crash-marred event. Riders were literally strewn around the 1/16 mile course with Zirbel way out front all alone. Pat McBride and Ingel, both on Hondas, appeared to be heading for second and third place finishes, but were soon spectators, leaving Zirbel to breeze to an easy, uncontested win while the other seven finalists stood in disbelief of the rare main. Harsha charged into the lead in the 250cc Pro main and this time, barring any problems, was looking for the big win on the Yamaha Sports Center Yamaha. Word, AMA Junior Ryan Fisher (Yam), Scott Miller (CA) and Horban (Suz) gave the first Expert fits for two laps until Harsha decided to nee any contact and rode the wheels off his YZ-based machine. Word settled into second over Horban, who sliced through traffic, but couldn't put the motor on Word. Harsha put an unbelievable lead on the eight rider final to come upon lapped riders. which caused a problem in both Pro mains. Lappers caused Harsha to alter his choice of lines, letting Word pour iton toclose within a few bikelengths at the flag. Horban rode alone in third over Fisher, Danny Bell (Bul) and Miller. A screaming yellow thumper piloted by Horban (Mayfield Ent.lGrants Pass SuzlMu£f Center/Light Racing Products) charged into the lead in the Open Pro main with Mike Oglesbee (Hon), Blagg (C-A), Bob K1um (Hon) and AMA Expert Dana Hansen (Yam) in tow. Horban blazed around the track, while the rest of the pack faded back into oblivion, burning themselves out in an effort of catching Horban. Last year's Novice sensation (Horban) was out to give all on hand a preview of what is to come in his Junior year. Oglesbee had his hands full a quarter-lap back, with Klum and Hansen. Horban prevailed in the end, just as the Grants Pass rider did in his heat race. Results OPEN PRo: 1. Robert Horban (Suz); 2. Mike O g _ (Han); 3. Bob Klum(Hon}; 4. DeM Ha,.." (Yam); 5. Irwin smokes Sawmill Enduro By Jim Bowman UPPER LAKE, CA, MAR. 25 Sun River Cycle Husky support rider Jeff Irwin (HiPoint/Inter-Link) turned in the low score of six points at the District 36 Sawmill enduro today, to take the overall win over fellow National pilot Matt Cullins (Petaluma MC Center/Rocky Cycles/Smith Goggles), who dropped one more point than Irwin while riding a borrowed 125cc KTM. Sierra Products-sponsored Wayne Smith turned in the best A class score of 8.169 to beat Bill Dart by seconds for the 250cc A class honors and third overall. This was the first Sawmill enduro since the North Bay Motorcycle Club had trouble with extreme rain and postponements in 1981, so the hosting club had a few problems getting things rolling with the U.S. Forest Service. For the A class riders this called for a lot of timekeeping on fireroads. Dave Ryan did the best timekeeping in the Open A class to beat Cycle Gear/Richmond Yamaha teammates Eddie Diaz (1st 4-Stroke A) and Jim Bowman (2nd Open A) by one point with the score of nine. Senior class winner Morris Horman also scored a nine, one point over first 200cc A rider Steve Shoemaker and two points ahead of first place Vet A Cliff Glidden. The A class riders lost their points in three, short special test sections which claimed four points from Irwin in the first and one point each in the second and third tests. The top B class riders lost points in the same sections and maybe a few more by burning any of the four others located in the fairly easy fireroad sections. Having dropped just II points, Overall B class winner Dwayne Bansemer (1st 200cc B) couldn't have burned too many checks. Bansemer dropped one point less than Open B class
