Call1or.I..Arlzo Honda; Category C was won by Craig Martin on a new 500cc Honda Interceptor from Team Razor; and Chuck Wallace took the trophy in C size Box Stock on a 450cc Suzuki from Penny Taylor and Team Lush. By the time Super Street bikes were on the starting grid, an oil slick had accumulated in the outside of the last corner. Usual class winners Todd Griswold and Ed Wright crashed out of the race early because of the oil slick, and in the last lap, Tom Dahl's 750cc Kawasaki also slipped, costing Tom a hard fought second place finish in the final few yards of the event. Racing for the first time, Robin Bender from Motorcycle and Marine won the Category A Super Street trophy on an Ii000c Kawasaki. Overall first place finisher, jon McKibben won Category B; Randy Bechtal, also from Motorcycle and Marine, and K-B and Associates, took C Category on a 550cc Kawasaki and Chuck Wallace's 450 Suzuki was D Category winner. Formula One racing was. as usual, dominated by Griswold's 10000c Suzuki from City Suzuki, ND and Bel Ray; and C Super Street winner Randy Bechtel lead the rest of the field. earning the Formula Two win. Out in earnest to test the Firebird road course. Vintage racers battled wheelLOwheel for the first three slots. and persistence finally paid off for Craig Skinner and his Triumph Trident. Second place Vintage class winner was Red Gardner on a 1966 BMW. and close third was Marcjohnson on a 500cc Ariel. Results VINTAGE: 1. Cr8ig Sltinner (Tri); 2. Red Gardner (BMW); 3. MAR. 24 The Pros came out in force to get their final tune-up for the National at Ascot. It was Pete Hames' night as he christened the new TT course. which contained some very sharp left and right hand turns merging on the haH mile. jeff johnson got the nod 0(£ the line in the Open Money TT with Hames second and Roger Thompson third. johnson kept his Honda in the lead until the haHway mark when Hames made his move and took over the front running spot. From there on out. the combination of Hames and his Can-Am were unbeatable. johnson ended up battling with Thompson for the second but was able to keep Thompson at bay. Twelve of the finest riders southern California has to offer came to the line for the Open Money haH mile: five were mounted on Harleys. three on Yamahas. two on Rotax and one 500cc Honda with jeff johnson aboard. Fifteen I'aps would be the distance. and at the start it was Harley- t r. N ... mounted Hames in front with johnson second and Ross Klatt. Harleymounted in the third slol. One lap later, Thompson moved his Harley into the magical LOp three and the baule was on between him and johnson, and the duel was to last the duration of the race. Thompson tried to make his move in his favorite spot at Corona - coming out of four. johnson's strategy was to use the track which had dried out somewhat to give him a better hook up than the Harleys. It seemed to work again t Thompson, who tried the high and low road, but neither gave him the opening he was looking for. johnson didn't have enough pon ies for Hames, but hedid hold off Thompson tocollect the second. Klatt. who had locked into fourth early on, was there at the end with Edpie San Roman fifth and Ron Sheets sixth. Another 250cc Amateur has earned his Expert wings at Corona and he did it in convincing style: Rusty Gaita came off the line in fourth and battled his way to the second spot behind Bob Gabler. Gabler. who held everyone back. kept the lead until the sixth lap and as they came around on lap seven with the white flag, Gaita made a clean pass and came up with the lead. With one lap to go. Gaita let it all hang out and brought the victory home. Rich Sweaney, who has been the man to beat in this class lately, snuck by Gabler and came up with the second. Ross Thompson came up with a double win in the Open Amateur! Expert TT and haH mile. In the TT, it was jason Bell who got off the line first followed by Ted Thompson and Ross Thompson. Ted took over the lead on the second lap and Ross moved into second with joel Windham taking over the third slot a lap later. The status quo remained the same until the white £lag lap when Ross took over the lead. Windham moved LO second and Ted transferred to the sidelines a victim of failed machinery. Dave Alexander was more than happy to move into the third and filled up the vacancy. On the haH mile. Thompson repeated his game plan waiting for the white flag before taking the lead from Bob Graves and colleaing the win. jim Kesler rounded out the field. Ron Sheets picked up the win for the Experts on the haH mile topping Randy Reed and joel Windham. • Results PEE WEE: 1. Dustin Skalski (Yam). MINI NOV: ,. David Wodaazewski (Kaw); 2.
