Spencer BRENTWOOD, CA, MAR. 18 Spring came early at Tom Anderson's Sand Hill Ranch, with the conclusion of the Budweiser Weekends of Champions' ser- Northern California's Jim Ellis has been running hot, taking victories at Sand Hill Ranch and Sacramento Raceway. Vohland, Ellis excellent at Sacramento MX By Greg "Nuclear" Neukam SACRAMENTO, CA, MAR. 25 The second round .of the HiPoint/Pacific Race Spring Series at Sacramento Raceway's outdoor MX track proved to be 32 infinitely beller than the fledgling promotors' (Pacific Race Productions) initial effon three weeks previously. One problem, however, did mar an otherwise smooth running program. A seriously broken leg in the next-to· the-last race resulted in the cancellation of the second 250cc Pro moLO. A compromise was reached that was amicable to all involved. _ • In the first PCP Yamaha/Suzuki 125cc Pro moto Hi-Point/Yamaha support rider Tyson Vohland shot into the lead at the stan and rode flawlessly LO the finish for the win. Tim Aston began the moLO in second, buton lap two his Hi-Point/Kawasaki mount slipped from beneath him and he remounted in mid-pack. FMF/Hi-Point/Honda of Sacramento's Dave Coupe worked hard the entire moLO, advancing from a poor start to second while Honda-mounted Steve Vlahos flew to third. ScOll Robuck held on for fourth, with ASLOn fifth. Vohland wrestled the lead from Aston in the first-turn battle begin· ning moLO two. Vlahos, Kawasaki· mounted Frank Sigrist and Yamaha's Cory Cantaloupi rounded out the LOp five leaders while Coupe was stuck in sixth. For two laps Vlahos searched hard for a line around Aston, trying LO stick a wheel past at every opportunity. ASLOn finally went too wide, and Vlahos moved his Honda into second. By then, however, Voh· land was long gone. Recording the fastest lap time of the day, a two full seconds faster than anyone else, Voh· land secured the win and the overall. Vlahos' 3-Zscore was good for second overall while Coupe went 2-3 for third. Unfortunate circumstances caused the cancellation of the second 250<:c Pro moLO, but the first was excellent! Sierra Products/Answer Products/ Yamaha-support rider Jim Ellis proved to be in top form as he blasted into the lead of the first CapiLOI Yamaha 250cc Pro moLO in front of Idaho's Joe Wright. Hi-Point/Petaluma Honda rider Eric McKenna, Vlahos, and Honda-mounted Larry .Dashiel filled the top five spots at the start. Vlahos, adapting quite well to the quarter-liter machines, hooked it up into second. At the checkered, Ellis had it sewn up-while Vlahos controlled second. Hi-Point-sponsored Coupe had charged from back in the pack to an incredible third, leading Dashiel and McKenna. Jim Ellis held the top spot of each and every lap of both Open Pro motos. Euro-Cycles/Hi-Point/M Star-mounted Randy Losh rode to an impressive second overall by scoring third in the first moLO and a hardearned second in moLO two. On the first lap of the second moLO, Losh lopped off the shiftshaft as he clipped a steel post on an off-camber, ana. found himself stuck in third for the duration of the moLO. The Roseville Honda/Kawasaki 250 Junior class and the B &: T Kawasaki Open Junior motos were completely dominated by Honda-mounted Mark Baldry as he sailed to all four moLO wins by a big margin. Mark looks ready for the Intermediate ranks. Results 125 PRo: 1. Tyson Vohland (Yam); 2. St..... Via· hos (Hon); 3. Da... Coupe (Hon). 250 PRO: 1. Jim Ellis (Yam); 2. Steve Vlahos . (Hon); 3. Gary Nau· ies, as nearly 300 CMC motocross riders keep the action rolling in northern California. It was a full field of 40 250cc Pros out for the lion's share of the $1500 Bud bucks, with Dave Coupe winning a controversially ridden set of motos over Jim Ellis. Ellis Ie£! no doubt in anyone's mind that he was king of the big bore class. Tyson Vohland copped the 125cc Pro class but had a real good tussle with Steve Vlahos, while Tim Aston led most of the first round. In Old Timer action, Dick Mann and Paul Bostrom set the stage for the day with early round battles that got the crowd worked up. Bostrom challenged the living legend early in both motos, getting past, but only sufficing LO make Bugs work a little harder for his wins. Bostrom, only about seven years younger than Mann, rode his Contra Costa Honda very well, but could not contain the former Grand National Champion. Tim Aston has recovered quite well from his horrificautolbike injury of last year when he lost the lower portion of his right leg. In the 125cc Pro moLO one he led Steve Vlahos and Tyson Vohland, along with another 15 riders, past the halfway mark until his KX stalled in a slow corner; . somehow he kicked the choke lever on. Aston held on for third, with Vlahos winning and Tyson second. In the secondround, Aston's start wasn't so good but he worked around Vlahos for second. Vohland and his YZsupport ride was the winner with a 2-1, Vlahos was second with a 1-3, and Aston, third 3-2. A year ago, the docs were saying that ASLOn could probably walk okay, with the help of a prosthesis and could even ride bikes, but I don't remember anyone predicting that he'd be winning races, which is precisely what he has been doing. He will most likely continue, as this kid is a winner at heart. Just seeing a full field of 250<:c Pros is enough to get the adrenalin flowing, but add up the real good guys and it was truly like getting ready for Hangtown. Dave Coupe pulled the holeshot in the first moLO, but got gobbled up by Jimmy Ellis' YZ in what looks like Ellis' strongest season yet. Coupe is the number one ranked guy around these parts and doesn't let his Honda get passed by just anyone, but there was no holding back Ellis, who finished with a wide margin of victory over Coupe. Jon Nelson was close in third, and Tim Worth finished fourth, over a late· blooming Al Silhanek. In the second round, 'ElIis and Coupe broke clean, but with only one lap in the book, Joe Weight crashed real hard. An instant decision brought out a stop flag and a big squabble. Jim Ellis stated afterward, "I got back LO the line and there was no place for me, I got stuck in a terrible spot for starting, and just couldn't make up the lost time." On the com plete restart, EII is was stuck in the pack, while Coupe got passed by Silhanek in fine fashion on lap four. Silhanek and his Wayne Kestermont MPE Yamaha held first, and actually pulled a good lead by the checkered flag, with Coupe grabbing the overall with his pair of deuces. Ellis worked like crazy to take third, and second overall, after working up from 11th. Silhanekcopped third with a 5-1. Jon Nelson and SCOll Rebuck rounded out the top five. In the Open Pro division, Ellis smoked the competition, especially in the second round. Still hot about the 250cc issue, he roared off in the second round, nearly lapping half the field in the IO-Iap race. Coupe on'ce again was satisfied with second place finishes and Joey Schlag, riding a borrowed scoot, got third over Jerome Heiberger and Danny Boles. Top-rated Mini racers saw Terry Bostard destroy the competition on his Contra Costa CR80, with Mike Pascarella crashing out again and Jason Assad claiming second. Jimmy Clay and his new-found Kenny Roberts Yamaha Country YZ80 ride, found winner's brass with a 3-2 combo over Chris Ward and Scott Stone. Results ' 80 NOV: 1. Glenn Fargo (Kaw); 2. Visser claims a double at Montana MX CORVALLIS, MT, MAR. 18 High Country Motocross kicked off its new season on a very demanding, sandy riverbouom track at Corvallis. Over 175 riders from Montana, Idaho, Washington and Canada made up a day of close racing for the spectators. The largest class in attendance was the 125cc B division. In the first moLO, the 33 riders raced into turn one, led by Billy Bouck. A deter-
