Magallanes master Intermediate, at Corona Nighttime MX By Nate Rauba CORONA, CA, MAR. 30 Yamaha-mounted Mike Magallanes was the winner of a hotly contested 250cc Intermediate class tonight at Corona Raceway, edging rival Steve Pialloni (Cycle Shop/Anaheim Honda) out of the overall by way of his second moLO vicLOry. The first moto belonged to PiatLOni as he shot into the lead and held it for most of the race. Magallanes started second, but at the end of the first lap had dropped to sixth, leaving the position to Juan Posca (Orange County Cycle/Yam). On the second lap Piattoni got out of shape !n the stadium whoops, nearly commg to a stop at the crest of one of the jumps that follow the section. Posca almost flew into Piattoni, but a midair correction got him by safely and into the lead_ Posca led for the next lap and a half before falling in the whoops himself and allowing PiatLOni to retake the lead for good. Posca got going again just ahead of Ray Groom (DuraLube/Lakewood Honda), but on the final lap, he fell once again in the whoops, this time allowing Magallanes to get by and capture second_ Groom was first LO turn one in the second moLO, but Magallanes cut underneath and blocked Groom's line exiting the corner LO steal the lead. Posca quickly passed Pailloni for third then got Groom by the end of the opening lap. For the first three laps, positions remained the same, then Magallanes went off the track in the stadium whoops still retaining first but losing ground to Posca. The excursion proved LO be costly, as Posca got by before the end of the lap. Back in third Groom held off the challenges of Piattoni but finally gave in on the fourth lap. Magallanes wasn't content wi th second and moved by Posca two laps after being passed to retake the lead_ The stadium whoops were trouble for Posca on the final lap when he again went down, his bike coming to reston LOp of him. Piauoni went by LO capture second and the runner-up overall behind Magallanes. Posca was able to remount and salvage founh behind Groom, earning third overall honors_ Results HIGH SCHOOL WOMEN: 1. Beier was in top form after his amazing fourth place overall, top privateer finish at the Gatorback National the week earlier. Beier's win was hardly a runaway, however, as Suzuki rider Doug Dubach and Yamaha-mounted Vince McMahon gave chase. Dubach kept the pressure on Beier throughout both motos as McMahon struggled to overcome poor starts and move into contention. Dubach would eventually take home the runner-up share of the purse as McMahon place a close third. Honda rider Robert Sherwood topped the Open Intermediate race as he battled with two other Honda riders, Simon Pearson and Karl Holmberg for the win. Pearson picked up the second place honors as Holmberg placed third. • - r~tkKS C orbIn THE THE "GUNFIGHTER" SADDLE IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR INTERCEPTOR. 2" LOWER SEATING ENHANCES CENTER OF GRAVITY - EXTREMELY COMFORTABLE -COLORS AVAILABLE - FAST TRACK LOOK - SUPER CRAFTSMANSHIP Retail $149 00 ~ 800-538-7035 USA • ~ 800-662-6296 in CA Results· 250 PRO: 1.
