Tied on nine points and gelling ready for the run-o££ were Shane McDonald, Danny Perkins and veleran Firsl Division rider Keith Chrisco. (You remember Chrisco, he relired over the winter.) When Chrisco fell, the middle finger on his left hand was pinched belween his c1UlCh lever and grip, causing a severe gash on the knuckle. Chrisco came back 10 win his lasl lhree rides and perform a series of crowd-pleasing wheelies bUl his hand had swelled and was lhrobbiJ!g baQ!y before the slart of lhe runoff and he was forced 10 wilhdraw. When he pulled OUI McDonald and Class "C" transplant Perkins· aUlOmalically moved into lhe main. Wayne LeUlZ foughl orr a very slubborn jim Turner over lhe firsl lWO go-'rounds 10 win lhe consolation. "Smoolh" Lou Kreisberg took second followed by Turner and Tim McCasland. Mazzacane slarted lhe day on his Maely bUl when il was down on compression he swilched 10 his brolher's jawa. BUI as Mazzacane was gelling ready 10 slage he pulled in his clutch and discovered that it was history. Afler some frantic scrambling Leutz came to the rescue and Mazzacane was now aboard a Weslake. HequickIy showed that he could adapt to the English motor by taking the gate and throwing it into lurn one firsl ahead of McDonald. McDonald quickly turned the tables as he used the outside of the track 10 blasl by Mazzacane in turn lWO. Mazzacane pulled even in lurn three with DeTemple lhen splitting the duo and taking the lead as they raced three abreasl into turn one on lap two. Mazzacane momenlarily sluck his wheel in front on the back chute but DeTemple repelled that charge as well as the rest of Mazzacane's advances over lhe final lWO circuits. Perkins took third ahead of MacDonald who went down on lap two. After the race a very-elated DeTemple said, "It was tougher than I thought it would be. I had a dry spot on the track at the gate and thaI cost me on the start. I didn't think I would get by Mike; he was running good. He is really turning into a good rider. " Results MAIN EVENT: 1. Bast Faas fly at Costa Mesa opener By Scott Daloisio COSTA MESA, CA, MAR. 30 Michael Bast proved that he still has it by taking the Scratch main on a night highlighted by some spectacular Speedway action at the Coors-sponsored season opener at the Orange County Fairgrounds. After witnessing 21 thrilling races, the crowd rose to their feet for the Scratch main which consisted of Buddy Robinson, defending National Champion Kelly Moran, MikeCuroso and Bast. Robinson, orr the pole, took the gate followed by Moran and Bast (Justice Brothers/Riverside Mitsubishi/Oakley Wes), who was coming from the number four slot. As they reached the first corner, Robinson and Bast sandwiched Moran but the former British League star wriggled free and in a spectacular move he dropped 10 the inside coming orr turn two and tried 10 relieve Bast of the lead.
