Moran again dropped to the pole and tried to race inside Bast. The "Master" again was up to the challenge but Moran was not through yet. As they came off turn two on lap lwo he again tried the inside only to have Bast put on an aggressive block as he came down to the pole. Leoni Faas used some hard work on the Boot Ranch/King O'Lawnsponsored WeslaKe to capture the win in the first Costa j\1esa Handicap main of the season. Dennie Briggs, who came into the meeting as a reserve and then took the win in his heat and semi, took the initial lead from a crowded 20-yard line over Ron Blanton and Greg Ayers. Off the 30, Faas quickly picked off Ayers and Blanton, setting his sights on the Godden-mounted Briggs and the big money position. While Faas was drawing a bead on Briggs, Dave DeTemple was showing some of his old form and quickly hunted down Faas after starting on the 40. At Jerry King's white (Jag, Faas [Jew by Briggs on the inside. DeTemple followed through but was unable to catch the very deserving winner before the checkkers unfurled. Moran stayed close the remainder of the way but Bast made it clear that Moran would have to go through .him if he planned to win. At the checkered the fans gave the four gladiators standing ovation for the battle they had just put on. After Bast took the win, he decided to give the fans a wheelie down the back chute. He made it about three feet before he lost it and threw his bike away. Steve Murray (Malcolm Smith/ C&M Tool) survived a last-second bobble in his heat race and came back to win the Second Division main event. Murray, from the zero took the lead on the start. Dennis Hall was challenging for the lead in the first bend when he went down and from there on it was all Murray. Pal Cain, who was riding in his first race since coming out of retirement. finished second two lengths back with Ron Williams claiming third. Talented Je[f Springman on his Bill's Pipes/Troy Lee Design-sponsored Weslake took both the Third Division main and his heat race from the 10-yard line. In the main, where Springman was unchallenged, Rick Vanderham rode to second with Randy Roscamp taking third. After Springman won his heat race, promoter Harry Oxley exclaimed to this writer, "Did you see that? I think that may have been the most exciting Third Division heat race I have ever seen." After the main an elated Springman revealed, "[ didn't finish putLing my bike together until this afternoon. I ended up riding it near the hills by my house and [ cracked the frame in three places." The evening was also sparked by some major crashes including one in the first race of the evening when Dubb Ferrell and Robinson collided with Ferrel getting dragged halfway down the backchute.By far the wildest of the evening was a front straightaway affair in a Second Division heat race. Riders Wayne Leutz, Cary Faas and Shane Hawley along with their bikes somersaulted down the track but fortunately no one was injured. j1~T-'\~Town and Country 4460~. 'Gage Ave. .1 " . -~ Honds Bell.
