were hanging on to hold a position in the top five overall, with Dowell riding his 250 in fine fashion. Starting the eighth and final lap, Brown and his CR480 were still holding a one-minute lead; but in hot pursuit was Grossi and the M Star. Duke Dowell gave up his third overall in a last ditch gas SlOp, with john Haaker being the fourth man through, just in from of Smart, who SlOpped permanently with a very flat rear tire. Doug Noell and Troy DeHerrera moved into the top ten list, joining Vet Expert Scott Davis, along with 250cc riders Dan Nielson, Mark Lucas, and the Brown brothers from Nevada. Coming in on schedule 10 receive the checkered flag was Pat Brown, a full minute ahead of second plllce. One of the most surprised guys was john Haaker, taking second on his So. City Cycle KTM. "I saw Grossi back down the hill, but didn't realize that I was second." Duke Dowell was about two bikelengths back for third overall. and first 250cc Expert. Race two got off a few minutes after 1:00 with nearly 200 Novices in seven classes. Seven laps later, it was new-comer Lex Webb the overall and Open Novice winner in his first organized race. Involved with the Four Aces, he entered his first run here and is mighty fast. • .-4 ~ 0. < . Results' - (Above) M.t Miller, winner of the Open Bel••••t M.bton Dune•. New bikes, motors and plans for victory • Brown bombs Hollister HS ByW.H. Spencer HOLLISTER, CA, MAR. 26 District 36 hare scrambles are alive and well, with nearly 300 riders giving their all at the Los Gatos M.e. annual event at the upper ranch of Hollister Hills SVRA. Pat Brown was the overall winner in the first of two, two-and-a· half-hour bashes on another lovely spring·like day. Right on the money, at 9:110, the gun blast fired-off the junior/Expert portion of the racing. Ken Ramsey pulled his usual holeshot around the first turn of the MX track, then motored up into the trees on the first so IG-mile loop.. Within the first baIf lap, Pat Brown and his Honda took the lead, but was soon passed by Billy "Sugar Bear" Grossi on a new M Star out of Moore and Sons. Right on the 20 minute mark, Grossi and Brown came through, with a minute lead over Ramsey and Charlie Smart. Problems cropped up for Grossi before the end of the third lap though. "I knew that the tank was small, but I figured I could make three laps. Ed Haymond told me they came rich, and they sure do. "just half a mile before the final check, Grossi was slOPped, trying to slosh gas from one side to the other, as Brown passed. On the start of lap five, Brown pitted and left camp still holdillg a one minute edge. He was running a very consistent, 2O-minute lap. Charlie Smart took over second, with -Grossi moving by him later, in what Otarlie said was "a place where you couldn't pass." DukeDowell and John Haaker were in abundance. In 600cc Superstreet, one of the largest and most hotly contested classes, over 40 riders eyed the flagman and each had his own victory plans. But as the green flag dropped, Walter Nitto started his self-proclaimed run for the club championship by taking the holeshol. He had the lead, but on his rear wheel was Alan Yarrow's Yamaha thumper, already working at getting by Nitto's Champion MC/Champion-Moriwaki-powered GPz. Yarrow threatened repeatedly in the first lap, but the 5911cc Kawasaki soon motored away from him. Yarrow kept up the chase, but had his hands full trying to hold off the challenge of the riders contesting for third. Tom Aquino, Mark Ruffner, jim Swafford and Edward Ragle rode in a tight pack, with the leader chan· ging in every turn, but even the traffic could not hold back Kurt Sager's cbar~ &om the fourth row. After finally getting past Yarrow and his faltering motor in the S-tums, Sager wicked up his RD and set his sights on Nitto, but never came close. Yarrow held his third place slot with some hard riding on the slowing thumper. In 750cc Stock Production, the action started off much tighter. Michael Carrell took the holeshot, but Vince Costa and Mike Simming were within a bikelength going into tum one. For the first lap, Carrell, Brian Hewitt, Costa and Simming formed a freight train leading the pack. Lap two was a different story. Novice pilot Mark Smith broke away from the pack on his GS750 Suzuki and quickly disposed of Simming and Costa. Hewitt felt the pressure and slipped his Interceptor past Carrell, with Smith close behind. They diced for a lap, then Smith got past Hewitt on the front straight, lost first in turn two, took the lead back in the Carousel and was soon passing the Open class riders from the first wave. Costa meanwhile motored his GPz750 past Carrell to set the final order. Results FORMULA I: 1. Denny Donerty (Kew); 2. Kerry Bryant (Kew); 3. Devid Lang (Suz). FORMULA II: 1. Welter Nitta (Kew); 2.
