Northern C8IItomIa-Northern N8VIIda-Oregon-W••hington-ldlIho-UtlIh-AI even then. a restart in place was required at the halfway point to complete thel15-inchers' main.' But it was Arney Wick whose cool professionalism came through. Arney survived a horrendous pile-up. replaced a lever. straightened his handlebars and put up with more restarts to wind up a winner. Not surprisingly, the 250cc class overall winners were in the same order as tonight's winnes: Arney Wick. Kelly Perkins, and Ricky Henson. The Open Expert main wasn't nearly as critical points-wise: Jerry Moore (Hon) had it pretty much sewn-up. But that didn't slow the race down one bitl Like the 250cc Expert main, the big motors required several restarts to get the race finished. Moore was the hard luck story tonight as he went down hard twice before they finally got going for keeps. Jerry rides the indoor track with more style than anyone and. though he finished well back this evening, took the overall points crown with Rod Reynolds (Hon) and Ricky Henson (Yam) filling out the top three. Henson thumped his Yamaha 600 to a smooth win over Arney Wick (Hon) and Reynolds in tonight's main. The overall point~ champ. of all classes, land l25cc ~ Champ Jeff lrby (Kaw). lrby had more points than the other class winners and was awarded a trick new helmet. lrby didn't figure in tonight'S l25cc B main. though. and it was Mike Hon (Yam) putting it to the rest of the boys. Word wins Corvallis Indoor ST Thriller By Clay and Suanne Ught CORVALLIS, OR, MAR. 24 National number 85 Frank Word III aced two classes at the third of five Oregon indoor short track races at Benton County Fairgrounds in Corvallis. Word totally routed the 25Occclasses, taking the Pro and A main events on his Adams Cycle Supply/Simmons Yamaha. The 250cc A main had Word rocket off the line over fellow Grants Passarea riders Charlie Mitchell. Bob Klum, Robbie Blagg and Greg Reynard. Word motored on the troops, just as he did earlier in the evening. and looked like the definite cream of the crop. By the time the halfway flag came out, Word had put a tidy half lap on Mitchell. who has not ridden competitively for quite some time. Mitchell had his hands full with Klum, who was pushing from behind, and with Blagg who was in the hunt just mere feet behind. Word won the trophy hands down over Mitchell andKlum. Word came back to haunt the 2SOcc Pro main eYeDt, but the real battle. was for second. Specialty Cyclessponsored Robbie Blagg, a mere fifteen years old. was riding Word's heels in the first tum, with Marty Zirbel, Mitchell andAMA Expert Jeff Harsha tight knit in a pack close behind. Word left everyone behind after two laps, which set up the most exciting five way battle for second this season. Word. as everyone on hand could tell. had the race well in hand at the midpoint in the race, and motored merrily on his way to receive the checkered flag. Harsha swooped up Zirbel. then fought it out with Blagg to end up in second with a lap to go. Harsha pushed his Yamaha sponsCenter/Simpson Yamaha hard, to close the gap on Word, who was unaware that his rival had moved from last to second. AMA Expert Gerrard put his CanAm 500 single on the pole position in the Open A main event with arch rival Don Wilson right beside him. Wilson led the start. but it was Gerrard ramming his way through early traffic to hold down first. over a CanAm trio consisting of Wilson, Blagg and A.j. Eschwig. Gerrard moved away from the competition while Wilson dropped off the pace for a moment letting Steve Kendig, Klum and Blagg into front-running positions. when it counted. Wilson put the hammer down and charged back to second at the finish over Kendig, Klum and hard riding Blagg. Harsha was pumped for a win this evening and was out to sweep the Open Pro main event, but as fate would have it, this wasn't to be one of his beuernights. After one lap. it was Harsha and Kendig shimming into the retaining wall. causing the red flags to come out. AMA Expert Dana Hansen worked hard to get to the final, by winning the semi, which had only one transfer position. Hansen was front runner until this incident halted action. On the re-start it was Gerrard and Harsha having it out for the lead. Gerrard rode to a win on the inside line. on the smooth-asglass Ben Miller-prepared course. Hansen rode in third until mechanical woes slowed him. putting Klum and Wilson into the top five. Gerrard held off hard riding Harsha for the win, with his flawless style. ~ ~ -----------HARD TO FIND 1984 VZ250 ON SALE I At Orange County Cycle ALL YZ & IT Models Available AT SALE PRICES Results OPEN PRO: 1.
