thern ~evada·Southern Cailfornla·Arlzona-Southern Nevada. Southern Callfornla.Arizona.Southern ·Nevada.Southern Call quarter-mile sand drag strip, was now about 200 yards long and went into a broad sweeper. From there on, the usual course was run backward including the Indian Dunes International MX course. The best part, at least from a spectator's point of view, was the super tight hairpin turn. The ropes on the outside ohhis turn never stayed up more than one lap. The .Pros started in three rows: Open, 250s and 125s. When the first batch reached the water jump, Mark White launched his International Yamaha over the water first, closely followed by another Yamaha pilot Willy~ Simons of Dirt Rider magazine. They were less "than five seconds apart at this point and stayed that way for the entire race. In that first lap, Dan Hoover came over the water in third only a few seconds back and was tailed by Kenny Parry. Louie Franco's Whirlwind Racing Honda topped the wave of 250s but another Internation'll Yamaha rider, Mike Shoemaker was already beginning to make his move. By the middle of lap two, Shoemaker led the 2505 and had a tough job to catch the Open leaders, who were about 45 seconds ahead. Brad McLeod put his Honda into a solid third just behind Franco. Jim Simons, David Antillion, and Rick Maki came through on lap one in a knoL By lap two, Maki had jumped ahead two spots to lead and Antillion had stumbled a bit to fourth behind Jon Ortner. Maki dropped out somewhere during lap three and Simons was back in the lead with Antillion and Ortner about 20 seconds behind. In lap four, Simons went to the same never-never land that had got Maki earlier and Ortner jumped his Yamaha into first to stay. Antillion's Honda was only seconds behind but couldn't close up in the few laps remaining and finished second. Since first and second Open (and overall) were firmly held by White and Willy Simons, the race was for third. Hoover and Parry fought for that position tooth and knobby right into the last lap when Hoover didn't show and Parry took a well-earned third. While they were battling 'each other, Shoemaker became dissatisfied with just leading the 250s and started to work up through the Open ranks. Franco followed a few lengths back and stayed second 250 all the way. Shoemaker couldn't reach the two Open leaders but eventually wound up at third overall and first 250. Results PRO 125: 1. Novices steal the spotlight at Barona Oaks By Rod Eschenburg SAN DIEGO, CA, MAR. 18 Even when many Expert and Intermediate riders were away for the weekend at the NMA, Barona Raceway still pulled its usual fine turnout of riders especially in the Novice and Beginner classes. One of the big winners of the day was Yamaha-mounted Larry Lemire who scored two come from behind wins in both the Stock and Modified Mini Novice class. In the Stock class, Lemire ran a distant second behind Matt Browne in the first moto, then came back in the second go around for the win and overall, while Browne was stuck in lapped traffic much of the moto. Lerpire made a repeat performance in the Modi fied class, this time edging Marc Burnett (Kaw), and David Germain (Hon). There were two divisions in the Mini Beginner class. Newcomer Chris Morgan (Yam) tore apart division A after claiming back to back wins, while Jason McDougal (Yam) and Raben Dick (Yam) spent much of their time bauling in division B. McDougal ended up on top while Dick and Trent Geltzer (Kaw) followed. Yamaha-mounted Richard Aldrich topped the 125cc Novice class nipping Gary Pratt (Cag) and Danny Crower (Kaw)·for the Modifieds, but in the Stocks, Aldrich fell victim to Crower after dicing most of the moto. After two hard-fought battles in the l25cc Beginner class, Jeremy Hughes went home with the gold, while Matt Blackburn (Hon) and Robert Spivey (Hon) finished second and third. Burdette bombs Minis at Corona By Nate Rauba CORONA, CA, MAR. 6 Mike Burdette stole the spotlight of a two rider show in the Mini Inlermed.iateclass LOnight at Corona Racewayovercoming rival Bill Warnick to win the first moto and easily winning the second. Kawasaki-mounted Warnick grabbed the holeshot in moto one, followed closely by Burdette (Pomono Valley Kawasaki), Andy Atkins (Castle Rock Yamaha) and "Evil Eph" Benjamin (Sunwest Yamaha/DC Pro). Burdette tried gettirig by the leader down the second straight but was unsuccessful and pulled in behind Warnick for the first two laps. By lap three, Burdette had the lead and began getting caught up in lapped traffic. Warnick also got caught behind them, though and was slowed down briefly. Once Warnick got through the traffic he was back on Burdette. On the fifth go-'round, Burdette looked like he would pull away, but Warnick was on the gas and closed the gap by the last lap. Warnick made a charge, but couldn't get by Burdette in the last few turns and had to settle for second. Atkins came across a distant .third - with Benjamin in fourth. Benjamin blitzed down the stim straight with the lead in moto two, but Burdette was right there to steal it from him through the first turn. Warnick was in third, and near the end of the opening lap, slid out and was pinned under his bike, injuringa leg in the process. Burdette pulled away and steadily increased his lead to the finish. Benjamin, after breaking away from Atkins on the second lap, took a safe second and runner-up overall. - Results HIGH SCHOOt WOMEN: 1. Tracy Cunninghom (C.N.); 2. JoAnn Boone (C.N.l. MINI SR: 1.
