TEN YEARS AGO The Yamaha Super Series of motocross came to a close under HousLOn 's Asrrodome. Tim Han (Yam) became the series champion, after taking the overall5OOcc win in the double-header weekend. Tony DiStefano (CZ) finished second-place 500, and third overall for the series. Jim Pomeroy (Bul) out-scored Pierre Karsmakers (Yam) for the 250cc honors, but Karsmakers was the 250cc series winner. A total of 41,000 spectators attended the two-day event. The combined Mini/Powder Puff win went to Keith Baker on "an incredibly nick XR 75 with about eight inches of suspension travel and the exhaust note of a 350-Four." His estimated speed on the long straight was 50-55 mph. Moorpark, California was the site of a CRC Valley MX. Sue Fish ran away with LOp honors in the lOOcc Powder Puff class. Her Hodaka was the dominating force of the day. Streaking was the hot set-up in the mid-70s, and the motorcycling scene got its share. At Daytona the week before, numerous cases were reponed. In California, even the local races were plagued with "Noclothesitis." The openmg of AFM road racing in southern California was held in Ontario. Eddie Lawson was running away with the 50cc GP win, until a last-lap seizure handed the win to Steve Zimmerman. Marty Lunde and R.on Pierce ran away with the 350cc GP class, and Art Baumann dominated the Open GP class. Jeff Ward took a pair of wins at AMC's motocross at Orange County International Raceway. The Hondamounted "Flying Freckle" aced the Mini and 1000c Intermediate racing. Lana Moorewood took his raging Indian to a double trophy weekend at CMC's Irwindale event. Both the Mini (second) and 100cc Expert (first) classes wer~ threatened by Moorewood. Chuck Lunde took his Honda to the' 125cc ExPert/Pro winners' circle, and backed it up with another win in the 500cc Expert class, this time on a CZ. The full color cover of Cycle News was adorned with a photo of desert race Mark Adent. He had just given up a DKW ride to go with Penton for the 1974 season. The rookie Expert had his sights set on defeating the likes of Mitch Mayes, A.C. Bakken, and Jim Fishback.
