Taking the overall win at Red
Mountain this weekend was
Dan Smith, mounted on a
Husky, while Dan Ashcraft, also
., 36
aboard a Husky, pulled in for second
overall.
The 9:00 a.m. start had Ashcraft
edging Smith out of the hole, b';lt it
was Smith hiuing the fastest traIl to
the bomb and taking the lead never to
relinquish il. The bomb run. was
mean and it took out a lot of rIders.
joe Zoller did a nasty get-o£( and
received a battered elbow and knee
forcing him out of the race. Ron
. Shuler and Bobby Charters were two
others that also went down on the
bomb run. Out past the bomb it was
Smith and Ashcraft leading with
Randy Morales in third.
In the 250cc race, Scou Stearns was
up with Charles Barney ,!nd Derrick
Paiement. Stearns had Just passed
Paiement when he put another hole
in his exhaust pipe. Later Stearns
said he just can't a£(ord new pi pes
every weekend! So it was Barney leading the 250s with Paiement second.
The Novice start had je£( Dorler,
on a 250, off the line like a b~lIel. It
was a LeMans start and je£( hterally
dusted everyone 0(( the line. Open
rider Gabe Mc eese pulled into the
lead out past the bomb. Keith Tullar,
wearing the Checkers' colors, came by
second leading the 250cc class. Reg
Ross had one of his best starts today
but out past the bomb, he collided
with another rider and emerged with
a big hole in his crankcase. and his
race was ended fonhe day. Ridi ng his
first race was Ian Porteous, and he
had his C-c1ass bike up with the front
runners.
Leading after the first loop came
Smith and was followed by Ashcraft
as they made their way through homecheck. Morales was third and Chuck
Stearns, after a bad bomb run, had
worked up to fourth. Coming by at
fiftb was first 250cc rider Barney.
Andy Matthews riding his first ride as
an Expert came by at sixth overall
and second 250. Another 250cc rider
john Blakeney was hot today, and at
this point was seventh overall and
third 250. Next came the Pro Cycle
riders Ken Upp and Ken Oviatt, both
on KTMs, were eighth and ninth.
Running first Vet and leading in the
Vet 250cc class was Bill Becker. Next
came Mark Zoller, another Pro Cycle
rider, and was leading the C bike
class on a 125cc KTM, while second
was Tom Elias. Leading the Vet
Sam Rames dusted the best to
take the overall and 250cc Expert win at tht: ~iz~na ~esert

Rames brought his 250cc Husky !n
with a 3:40:56 time, followed by Mtller's dad, Dave Miller, with a 3:41:35
taking Open Expert and second overall. ext was KTM/County Cycle
rider Paul Bennett one second back
on his L/C 250, and Bob Tod's Sunnyslope Honda 250 followed within
the same minute.
However, Mark Hildebrand and
his 250cc Yamaha might have won
had he not experienced a flat rear tire
on his third lap. Another pit timed
the Circle [nd.lMotorcycle Mecca!
Dirt Unlimited crew's swap at 3:56,
and Hi[debrand finished only 2:46
0(( of Rames, to end up fifth overall.
Glen Carmody was first 200cc Expert
and finished seventh overall at 3:49:39
on his new 125cc KTM. Only 168 finished out of the 313 starters.
Running three laps were the Sr.
Experts, Sr. Amateurs, 30 and 38+ Sr.
Vets, Amateurs and Novices. Overall
was last year's A.D.R.A. Sr. Expert
Champ Wayne Decklever on his 500cc
Honda at 2:48:53. He finished nearly
two minutes ahead of Mark Hu£(ine,
second overall and first Amateur.
Indeed, five of the top ten were Sr.
Experts, with E[mer Attson finishing
third at 2:50:51, and Bill Chunn founh
at 2:57:02.
Dennis Parks, first Open Amateur
and fifth overall, survived a nasty fall
just ten feet from the finish. Little
john Nolan also showed his stu£(,
pushing his three-day-old Honda to
a clean third in 250cc Amateur. And
in the Novice ranks, Roger Hickey
won the Opens, Rob johnston took
2505, with Wayne Balcerzak bringing
home the 2005.

Results
Open class was Karryl Ellis, and
Morris Norman was in front in the
Senior 250cc class. In the Open Amateur class, Breu Gailey recovered from
a bad start and started to move up. He
had already taken the lead in this
class. Steve Spragle led Alan Ha1"!ison in the 250cc Amateur class, whIle
Diane Holeman had the lead in the
Women's race. The Novice battle had
Open rider Gabe McNeese leading
with Keith Tullar pushing him hard,
on his 250. Running third overall
was Russ Warne followed by D. Nuse.
After a short, dusty, fast last loop,
Smith pulled in taking the overall
with Ashcraft second. Stearns caught
Morales about five miles out from the
finish as Morales had troubles on an
uphill. After some dicing, it was
Stearns coming in for the third overall with Morales fourth. After another race between john Blakeney
and Andy Matthews for the first 250,
it was Blakeney taking the win with
Matthews second for fifth and sixth
overalL It may be a sign of good luck
as it was number 777, Upp taking the
lucky seventh overall spot on his
Mark and joe Zoller-tuned/Pro Cycle
KTM. Eighth overall was Ken Oviatt, another Pro Cycle rider. [n for a
ninth was Chuck Pettigrew and
rounding out the top 10 was Ed
Pierce Jr. which gave him a third in
the 250cc class. Taking a first in the C
bike class was Pro Cycle's Mark Zoller
on a l25cc KTM. The Novice overall
win went to 250cc rider Keith Tullar,
while Gabe Mc eese an Open-class
rider, finished second.
