People think that Mickey Fay and I are arch-rivals, but actually we're pretty good friends. We travel to the Nationals together and share equipment. I just wouldn't put a bad move on him for a lousy $400." That was how the big winner, National number 24 Randy Green summarized the action - and contact with Fay - in winningan indoor short track held in the Seattle Kingdome. Wesco Promotions and the Monroe short track people ran this year's Western Indoor Championship, with midget auto and kart racing also featured. "We had a lot of sleepless nights, but I think we pulled it off," said Wesco's Jan Glithero. Motorcycle racing proved to be the biggest draw for the almost 6000 spectat6rs, who watched the bikes perform on concrete. The rosin-coated surface proved suitable for dirt track tires, although Randy Skiver had finished second the year before with road raci ng slicks. Engine displacement for the onefifth mile oval was limited to 250cc. At least a dozen nationally ranked racers competed, but Green was the man to beal. "The important thing on this track is to be smooth. I just kept it in third gear and pegged it. Maybe it was just my night, but somehow I was able to hook up better than the others. The back straight had a painted area that you really had to be aware of. I don't think anybody fell off because of that, but it did disrupt the flow of the riding," said Green. Green, sponsored by Honda, took the measure of Spokane's fast Ron Yamamoto in his heat race. Electronic timing showed this to be the fastest heat, so Green earned the pole for the A main. A Trophy Dash Green earned the pole for the trophy dash as well, sitting next to fellow heat race winners Jeff Campbell, Fay and Randy Patterson. Green jumped the start, but was allowed one more chance from the front row. He didn't waste his second chance and jumped into the first corner alongside Fay. Green got a better drive off the southern turn on the counter-clockwise track and led Fav - who had to shift a couple of times per lap - to the checkered flag, followed by Patterson and Campbell. Of course, Green got his trophy, but who should pop outof a limosine but three beautiful trophy girls! If Pro rider Debi Wahl of Auburn, Washington, had won instead, presumably other arrangements would have been made, but Green seemed quite happy. A Main Joining the [our heat race winners on the front line were the four heat runners-up, Yamamoto, Skiver, Randy Roose and Dave Stering. Winners of the three six-lap semis were on the second row: Jeff Harsha, Kirk Strong and Mike Sullivan.
