Teammate Joe PicchiOLLino took over ahead of Nonh's Scou Burns and Jeff Digby, also from Hemet. By the end of the opening lap Burns was by Picchionino and eff had worked his way up to third. It wasn't long until Neff nailed his teammate for second then moved in on Burns and sLOle the lead when the Nonh rider went too high in a turn. Once out in front Neff was gone and Burns held a secure second all the way lO the checkers. A last-lap duel between Picchiouino and Digby was seuJed when Digby crossed the line in third. A race later Neff made the first moLO of the Open Senior/Novice class look easy, leading from the gate to the checkered flag. Gary Renko, of Los AlamiLOs High, pulled in behind and followed Neff for most of the moLO. On the final lap Renko madea move and tried to stuff it inside of Neff, but the Hemet pilot shut him off and motored on to the victory with Renko close behind. Neff grabbed yet another holeshot at the stan of the second 250cc Senior/Novice molO. Burns tried to steal the lead out of the first turn but was unsuccessful and had to seule for second just ahead of Renko. By the second lap Neff had moved out to a comfortable lead and Renko was by Burns for second. Renko got on the gas and slowly whiuled away at eff's lead until he caught up LO him at the white (Jag. The two bauled wheel to wheel on the final go-around but Renko couldn 'l find a way LO get by and had to s.elLle for second once again. Hemet's Shawn Hanson beat Neff to the first turn of the last Open Senior/Novice moto with Burns and Picchiottino following through. Neff seemed content to follow and push his teammate lO go faster for two laps before going by to establish a large lead by the moLO'S end. Hanson had to fight for second for a while until Piccliiouino fell in a corner and eased the pressure. On the last lap Renko had moved up to second while third place was up for grabs. Hanson was again feeling pressure and couldn't hold third as both Burns and Picchiouino got by for third and fourth, respectively. LaPorte fops Double X af Lake Perris By Sandy lee LAKE PERRIS, CA, FEB. 12 The Open race lined up 32 bikes at event two of the Double X Series at Lake Perris today. In the 500cc Expert class the holeshot award wem LO 1982 250cc World Champion Danny LaPone. LaPorte Rut on an exciting race against some top riders from Australia and France, along with some of our local stars like Gordon Ward and Chris Crandall. LaPone got the holeshot, but by the end of lap one, Steven Gall from Australia and Ward edged by LaPone making it Gall, Ward and LaPorte. The seventh lap something happened lO Gall putLing Ward in first and LaPorte in second. It was so close that they both tied for longest jump award. The 12th lap LaPorte got by Ward for the lead. In the 13th lap Ward's bike broke, but he definately had a momem of stardom leading LaPone for seven faps. This left LaPone, Gall and Crandall finishing in that order. Yannis Efthimiou from France finished a solid fifth. Mini Novice Jason Collier, on a DC Pro Yamaha, LOok a triple award: one for the holeshot, the longest jump and a first place. During the first lap Collier lost his front brake and stopped for an adjustment; put-' ting Dunn Voyer 30 seconds into the . tead. Collier got back in the race having about 15 minutes to make up the 3D-second lead Voyer had.
