Walls, Birmingham and it remained that way through Lhe end of the molO. Cadwell added another hole hot to his seemingly endless string of flawless starts lo begin molO two. D. Walls and Binningham were dicing it out for second, while C. Walls had gated poorly and bailed 0(( during the first lap. ielsen and john Burr teammate Mike Paluzzi (Hon) were moving through Lhe pack lOgether with ielsen in front. Cadwell dropped out of contention wiLh a flat tire on lap three. Nielsen took over first on the fourth lap and showed no mercy by stretching his lead wiLh each lap. The twO to watch were D. Walls and Paluzzi, as Paluzzi couldn't seem lo blast by the smooLh Yamaha pilot the same his teammate did. Finally, on the last lap, Paluzzi pulled out Lhe stops and passed Walls down a fast straight and made it stick, making the order Nielsen, Paluzzi, Walls and Birmingham, who had a sizeable lead over fifth-place finjsher Dean Keeling (Yam). D. Walls wa undoubtedly happy lO discover that Nielsen and Paluzzi finished sixth and seventh respectively in Lhe first moto, leaving his overall win intact. ielsen's6-1 earned him second, while Birmingham's 3-4 gave him third. Walls lands Novice win atDeAnza Peterson bombs big-bore dass at Corona By Michael Gillies By Nate Rauba SUNNYMEAD, CA, JAN. 8 CORONA, CA, JAN. 6 Fog lights were in order today at DeAnza Cycle Park as practice, and most of the motos, were conducted in the clouds. Honda-mounted Bill Peterson claimed the win in the Open Beginner class at Corona Raceway after dicing with two other Yamaha-mounted Daryn Walls was una((ected by the poor visibility and, much lo the disappointment of II other I25cc Novices, he took the firstplace trophy home wiLh a conservative, yet effective, 2-3 score. Suzuki of Riverside's Roben Cadwell led everyone into the first turn in Lhe first moto with CliH Walls (Sui) and Daryn Walls hOlOn his heels. jay Birmingham (Suz) was running a strong fourth until john Burr Cycle's Billy Nielsen (Hon) passed him on lap three. C. Walls got by Cadwell on Lhe fourth lap while Nielsen was working his way up to second place. Unfortunately, all of Nielsen's hard work went down the tubes on Lhe second to last lap when he miscalculated a tight left hander. This made Honda pilots; George Mannings and Dave Maybury. In both mOlOS, Peterson had to labor past a very stubborn Mannings. Maybury (Hon) led the five-man Open Beginners down the start straight in molO one but couldn't make the turn and kept going straight. Mannings (Hon) exited the first turn with the lead followed by Peterson (Hon). Maybury re-entered in third. Mannings pulled away from most of the pack but found Peterson glued to his rear fender. Peterson seemed content lo lay back in second and stay ju t close enough lo occassionally pull alongside and let Mannings know he was Lhere. Then on the fourth lap, Peterson made his bid for the lead but fail¢ on his first auempt Ponticelli (Hon); 3. Randy Schmidt (Hon). 500 JR DIV 1: 1. Stuart Prior (Suz); 2. Art Olivier (Hon); 3. Darrin Yenzer (Han). South African National Champion Rex Staten made his usual holiday vacation back to the U. S, and visited his home track at Corona Raceway, coming out of a comer. When they came out of the hills. Peterson had taken the lead and was quickly pulling away from the rapidly fading Mannings. Peterson crossed the finish line with a very comfortable lead with Mannings a distant second. Mannings holeshotthe second molO, as Peterson and Maybury fought from turn one lo two. Peterson's four stroke pulled out of the corner and quickly caught up lo Mannings. For the next two laps, Peterson put some heavy pressure on Mannjngs. Although riding more aggresively than in the first molO, Peterson again seemed content to follow in second for a while. He made his move on the fourth Lap, diving lo the inside of Mannings in Lhe second turn; only to find that his strategy wasn't going to work. A few turns later, Peterson finally slipped by, and once again Mannings backed 0(( allowing,Peterson lo cruise his thumper lo Lhe finish uncontested. In high school action, Upland teammates Bill Warnick and David Farris kept things interesting in the Mini Senior class. orth's john Holmes holeshot Lhe first molO followed by Warnick and Farris. Warnick wasted no time and moved into Lhe lead through the second turn with teammate Farris going by HoLmes later on the same lap for second. Warnick and Farris set out lo battle for the lead, leaving Holmes behind. On the third lap, Farris lOok the lead back in the hills, but Warnick wasn't about to give up and stuck close. Near Lhe end of the following lap, Warnick pulled alongside Farris and were side by side over the double jumps leading into a turn. Warnick came around in the lead while Farris picked himsel£ out of the dirt. Farris may have gone down, but he wasn't out of Lhe race yet. He managed lOeatch Warnick on the last lap but fell again, and he had to settle for second. "I ran into the back of him and fell," said Ferris after his first encoun- terwith Lhedirt, "then fell again after catching back up to him." Warnick grabbed the lead of moto two with Farris, NorLh 'sBucky Moore, and Holmes in pursujt. By the second lap, Warnick and Farri had put some distance on the two North riders, who were battling over third. Warnick seemed lo have the advantage down the straight, but Farris would close the gap in the turns. On the final lap, the two were still close, until Farris got hung up with a downed rider, giving ~arnick some breathing room through the last few corners. Moore held 0(( the charge of Holmes to capture third. • Results HIGHSCHOOL SR; 1. Bill Warnick (Upll; 2. David Farris (Upl); 3. Bucky Moore (Nor). 100: 1. Ron Jordan (Upl); 2. John Holmes (Nor); 3.
