Toyama tags Intermediates at Golden State opener By Tom Corley Photos by Nate Rauba IRVINE, CA, JAN. 8 Making a fine return to racing after breaking his arm while practicing for Mammoth Mountain MX, Mark Toyama downed the 125cc Intermediate third division, which consisted of a ·30-man field, in the Continental Motorspon Club's Golden State Skoal Bandit Series opener at Saddleback. 16 Saturday was designated for the Amateur riders with hundreds participating. The CMC utilized both the front and back motocross tracks for these riders. The back track was for the Mini riders who signed-up for the all-new Novice class which was established with the new year. The mai n track at the front of the pack featured the Junior and Intermediate racers. The day commenced with the "Wheelie Warrior" Tilson Shumate and his demonstration on how to ride the tough front track on the rear wheel. Then the racing schedule fired . off with the 125ccIntermediate riders. Three sipble divisi~ns formed. ~n • the third division it was a two-man contest between eventual winner Mark Toyama, who has been racing at this track since a mini rider, and David Antillion. Toyama pulled the important holeshot in the first moto. After what appeared to be a clean lead, the situation altered as Antillion LOok his . Honda from a mid-pack position to challenge the leader Toyama. A good dice developed between Toyama and the challenger Antillion. The lead changed hands as Antillion aggressively passed Toyama on a turn heading back towards the starting area. Toyama tried to set-up Antillion, but each time, the leader would close the gap. The.pressure was on Antillion who finally faultered when he came LO a berm and slid out. Toyama couldn't avoid trampling over AntiIlion and came out of the situation regaining the lead. Antillion wasn't exactly dusted for the day as he remounted and headed after Toyama. Time didn't allow AntiIlion LO catch Toyama, so he had to settle for second place. Mike Magallanes sawall of the crash and burn action from the thirdplace spot. Jimmy Palmer put his Kawasaki inLO fourth place. North County Yamaha-rider Lance Rieman rounded out the top five. Taking a bad start in final moto, Toyama made up for it when he swooped past the leader Frankie Brundage, who is fresh outof the 80cc class, on the first corner. Toyama explained the rest of the race from that point, "My clutch lever started to Joosen up, but I knew that Antillion was out of it because I saw him a couple laps later when he bailed. I just decided to mellow down and get the win overall!" For the final moLO it was Toyama, Brundage, Jim Spotts, Palmer and Rieman. Twofirstsearned Mark Toyama the clean overall win. Besides Toyama there were two other riders who held consistent mOLO-to-moLO s'Cares. Jimmy Palmer held a pair of fourths which landed him the runner-up spot. Lance Rieman was fiftl) in both cases and managed third overall. For Brundage the day was a disappointment as he took a 10th place in the first ,moLO which knocked him out of a top 'position. Brundage came back swing, ing in the final bout and placed second, which gave him a 10-2 tally and a fourth overall. Keith Morabito was fifth out of the tough 30-man field . Billy 'The Kid" Frank made winning the 125cc Intermediate division one race look too easy. Frank led easily in both molOS. While Toyama and Frank swept their classes, John Ray of the 125cc Intermediate division two race cam,e close LO doing such. Ray won the 'first round but lost the final round to Danny Cantley. It was Ray with the overall win. The 125cc Junior class had two divisions. Craig Whitney raced the first division of the 125cc Juniors even though he was nursinga broken ankle. In the first moto, Whitney felt good enough LO hold down a LOp position. Richard Fernandez took his Herb Friedlander Honda to a thirdplace start and moved up rapidly. Over a jump Fernandez went past Whitney and overtook the lead. Whitney settled for second place over Curt Trimble, Chad Smart and Jim Connolly. Surprising the pack in the 'final moLO was Connolly. Connolly took his Sutuki to the lead and held it for the entire way. Fernandez secured second place but was pressured greatly from Smart. Those two settled that way with Gary Lacy and Dallen McKenney placing fourth and fifth. Whitney didn't have the success that he did in the opening moLO, and this time, he was stuck back in eighth place. Richard Fernandez took the top trophy with a fine 1-2 tally. The inconsistent 5-1 tally belonging to Connolly gave him second overall. Chad Smart was third with a 4-3 score. Fourth went to Whitney. David Bauer placed fifth. There was some close racing in the 250cc Intermediate division one contes·t. E·ventual winner, Kevin
