(File photo.) Spooner, Earle shakedown Albany SX McKenna hustles new Husky to Sears Point win. By Clay Ught ByW.H. Spencer Photo by Dave Blanchard ALBANY, OR, JAN 8 Mark Spooner had lady luck on his side today at Albany's Supercross track and finally got the big win he had been - . 18 savoring for the past few races in the series; smoking the 125cc Intermediate class. Pro Richard Earle (ND/Seer/Cycle Country/Mike's Cycle Parts/Hon) took the Open Pro class on a day that would be the "hottest" both racing and temperature wise, with a balmy 55 degrees. After watching a young whiz known only as "Winn", which was exactly what he had in the game plan. Taking stranglehold of the Mini Intermediates and the 125cc Junior mOlOS, another flash entered and exited the course with a big win - Spooner. "The Spoon" showed them what contesting two or three classes all season has done for speed and stamina by waltzing to a shake down of the class, beating rivals Kelly Olson and local Ron Robinson. Spooner, who had some bad luck in the Open class with only a third, made up for it by collecting the brass for the day in what seemed to him a routine win on the rough, sand-lined course to also move 'up in the points standings for the season. The highlight of the days racing came in the form of the combined Open Pro/Intermediate class. Moto one was led by Bob Leach, Husqvarna-sponsored, Michael Holbrook, on a 500, Bryan Reeder, Earle and Spooner. Earle then mounted a charge while Spooner moved through early traffic on a Yamaha and positions began to settle that is until Earle bailed off in a gnarley section while in the thick of things and let his Intermedia te rivals get one step up on him. Earle did manage to boot his 500 up and take a third at the completion of the moto. Moto two had Earle take it all the way to home plate on his new '84 Honda CR 500, making up for the last races misfortune when he stuck a ring in practice. Holbrook took the top Intermediate honors over Reader, Breuer and Spooner. SONOMA, CA, JAN. I The Annual Knobby Bowl at Sears Point Raceway kicked off the New Year with everyone's head in a cloud. Heavy fog covered the track early in the morning, but when the skies cleared Eric McKenna shined to victory in the 250cc Pro class. Hi-Point Racing's McKenna wasn't quite sure what was ahead for the new season after winning the Lilliputian GP a while back, but a new Husky ride now appears on the horizon. He promptly went out and smoked the 250cc Expert class on a factory water-cooled Husky. Larry Dashiell did the chasing in the first round until his Petaluma Cycle Center Honda quit, but he borrowed McKenna's KTM and then led McKenna around for half the distance in the second moto. But Dashiell gave up the lead after some fierce action. McKenna took the win followed by Dashiell. Danny Castro was content with second overall on his YZ, while Jay Cook took third with a pair of fives, Duyane Joice took fourth. Dr. AI Bauman kept up his fierce competitive spirit riding; winning five or six motos and taking home the brass. Craig Shulz led both mOlOS early but succumbed to the pressures of Baumann with Ernie Cabral in for third. Randy Hanson topped the Juniors while Craig Pierce took on and beat Mel Tremain. Tremain returned after a six-year layoff; still riding an ancient Husky. Glenn Fargo and Corey Hannus swapped Mini-class wins with Fargo the tops in the second round deciding overall with Eric Nordin third ahead of Curtis Cannis. Jim McClinton held on to second in Old Timers Expert over Rich Lokke and his trick Honda CR500. Dr. Fred Cameron took top Junior honors with Don Lockrem dukingit-out with Howard Womack for Novice trophies. Reader, Olson awesome at Albany SX By Clay and Suanne Ught ALBANY, OR, JAN. I Bryan Reader and Kelly Olson had the hot hands in winning the Open and 125cc Intermediate classes respectively at Albany's Supercross on the first day of 1984. Reader copped the wins in the Open class, which as of late seems to be the most popular, while Olson once again did the dirty deeds by upendi ng the I25cc part of the program. The 125cc class wins for Olson weren't easy, as the local speedster was once again faced with fast-riding Mark Spooner, who was runner-up for the second consecutive race while Ron Robinson took third. In Open action, it was Reader and Spooner fighting for the lead and giving the die-hard fans their money's wortt!. Spooner, who contests two classes, did all hecould at putting the stops to Reader, just as did Husqvarna-mounted Mike Holbrook, both attempts failed as Reader copped top brass, with Spooner in second and second overall. Holbrook was third, outpacing a freight-train fight for fourth. Riding four20-minute motos proved toputa toll on Spooner, who took two second-place overalls (125/0pen) for the second time in as many races. Salem's pave Fox flew to back-toback 250cc Intermediate wins. Quick-riding 125cc Pro rider Bill Holtman did all he could at taking the brass away from Fox, who held the power advantage on the tiddler of Holtman. Holtman would catch an amazing amount of air coming off the unique "tower" jump, which is actually a school bu covered by a mound of sand and is approximately 20-feet high and nearly a straight drop off. Overall it went Fox, Holtman and Wes Hansen. Young Jeff Daily and his Team Green Kawasaki have been a tough combination to beat in the northwest, and today was no exception as Daily held on the throttle longer than all others to win the Mini Intermediate class with ease over Ryan Holm. Daily put a large gap between himself and Holm, and Holm put distance on Mark Wored, Jerry Aicher and Jason Pearson, who were 1-2-3 in the mini Junior class to finish off the day's racing. Henson plays Santa at Indoor ST By Marty Gregory CALDWELL, ID, DEC. 17 In a dandy evening of indoor short track, Owyhee Motorcycle Club points champ Ricky Henson gave "presents" to the other Open Experts. The "presents" were second place, third place and so on as Henson smoothly stroked his Fred Johnston Yamaha 600 to victory in the Open Main. Out-of-towner Arney Wick (Hon) dispensed "gifts" of a similar nature to his fellow 250cc Experts and, in the true spirit of this "Santa Race" (as it was bIlled), Mark Hall water-pumped his way to victory in the 125cc Expert Main. Henson was consistently in the right place at the right time in the Open bash. With typical short track "death 'n destruction" going on all around him, Henson just motored, and his smoothness paid off with a win over berserking (and crashing) Jerry Moore and a truly inspired Kelly Perkins. Perkins was hot. He flashed his 250 Honda to a convincing win in his heat race and pressed Arney Wick for the lead throughout the Main event. His performance in the Open races aboard his 490 Maico track bike were no less spectacular. Beginner action was also great at the Owyhee Motorcycle Club's special Santa Race. James Cyr had it spot of bad luck in the Micro Main when he fell while fighting Richie Reynolds for the lead. Cyr redeemed himself and had a grin a mile wide though, after taking a win in the 80cc B Main. Cyr hung tough on his Suzuki until early leader Jon Irby went down and then motored home to prove that a Micro-size guy can beat the "big kids." In another exciting B event, the bleachers rocked for Frankie Amen as he diced with Garry Bonny in the Open Main. Bonny got inside and grabbed the lead at one point but Amen wouldn't have it and blasted his way back in front the way Open c1assers do itl Fast Terry Anderson did his usual number on the 250cc Experts in a field which included a MontessaRickman and an Ossa for those interested in "Los Scooters de Espana.".
