Michelle Putman.• Florida's John Reinholt and New York's Tom Rice kicked off the 1984 season with Pro-Am class wins in the opening series round at Gatorback Cycle Park. Hondasupported Reinholt, who' topped both the 250 and 500cc divisions said "I trained hard for this a~d w;s in great shape , but I didn't count on the cold weather. It was hard 10 feel loose." Rice, who added one 250cc moto win to his sweep of the I25cc class, said, "Kawasaki made me an offer I couldn't refuse. Mike Gray of Precision Performance has the engines screaming." A total of 316 riders from 26 states, England and Canada were on hand for the AMA-sanctioned, Coca-Cola/ Barry's Trailers-sponsored event. One of the surprises was the switch of Florida's Ronnie Tichenor from Yamaha 10 Kawasaki. The new Kawasaki Team Green/Hi-Point/Scott/ KR W rider made the transition impressive, sweeping the Mini A class. "The Kawasakis have very good power," said Tichenor. "We just got them and need 10 dial in the suspension." British Mini Champion Paul Malin and his brother, Darren, looked forward to a pair of Florida races. Their father, who manages the Kawasaki Team Green Schoolboy program in England, sa!d, _ "I'm ~fraid Darren broke hIS WrISt m the first molO. We may go home early._". Paul Malin raced well m the Mml B class, but Damon Bradshaw and Hank Moree went 1-2. Harahan, Louisiana's Eddie Andry rode his Gulf Coast Kawasaki past Michigan's Ed Hieftje and roosted the rest of the 125cc B class for his final 125cc win in Florida. Canadian Pierre Volicoeur blitzed his l25cc C qualifier and the final molO for the win. The Honda of Canada-sponsored rider said, "I won my class at Dade City (Florida) last night, too_ I like Florida racing." Pennsylvania's Robert Houston and Illinois' Mark Simonaitis led the 250cc B events. Glen Hoar put his Toys for Big Boys Honda ahead when it counted fOT the win. "I hate to leave the series," said Hoar, a Canadian, "but I'm going home to do some ice racing."
