ley for a 1-2-3 Yamaha finish. Myerscough holeshot the second moto, with Lechie.n right berund. Although they remained close all race long, Lechien never got by, and they finished, far ahead of the pack, in the same order they started. Whelchel beat out teammate Larson for third, giving him second overall, while Larson managed third overall. Lackey's last-minute scratch in the 500cc Pro class still left an impressive lineup of riders. David Gerig's Husky, virtually the same bike he captured the last four-stroke race at Saddleback on, led all the way in the first moto, with Micky Dymond, similarly equipped, glued to his rear finder for the entire dozen laps. "We both took the same lines, so I never got a chance to pass him, "Dymond explained. Lap after lap Gerig shut the door on Dymond In what quickly became a two-man race. Farther back in third, Eric McCraken, back on a Yamaha, held 0(( "Mr. Bill" jewell's Can-Am for twO laps before dropping back. jewell then captured third until the Honda of Kevin Hopkins shot by on the ninth lap. The second moto started 0(( the same way, with Gerig successfully holding Dymond 0(( for most of the race. "I dropped back so I could sneak up on him and get by," Dymond explained. "Then at the top of the hill I outbraked rum and squared him 0((." From then on it was smooth sailing for Dymond. Dymond thanked his sponsor, UpTite Husqvama for supplying him with the factory-fresh ride and the race support. Hopkins finished a distant third ahead of Bob Rutten's Honda and the Can-Am of Randy Norman. Norman was racing, despite doctors' advice, for the first time since breaking his leg. "Roostin' Rick" Atkins led both motos of the Mini race. Keith O'Neal was Atkins' only competition all day, finishing second twice after some early dicing in both motos. Robert Casas took the 500cc junior class' first moto, followed across the line by Wayne McKelvey and Ron Bunn in a Honda-dominated race. In the second moto, first McKelvey then Bunn got by Casas. First nonHonda across the Iine was the Yamaha offourth-place Michael Vaillancourt. The sidecar team of Bob Schnoor and Langosh rumbled past the Phillip Palfreyman/Perry Melillo pair after two laps in the first moto. The second moto was easier for the Schnoor/Langosh pair as they led the race flag to flag. • Results OPEN PRo: 1. Brian Mverscough (Yam); 2. John Whelchel (Yam); 3. Phil ~rson (Yal)1). SOO PRO: 1.
