By Michael Gillies SUNNYMEAD, CA, NOV. 27 After a week off due to rain, DeAnza was back in full swing this week with an excellent, never-before-run section of track that was not only fun and challenging, but it promoted some fierce dicing as well. John Burr Cycle's Jerry Litteral raced his 1984 YZ80 for the first time today in the Mini Novice class. If .today was any indication, it will be a good year for the thirteen-year-old racer, as he smoked the competition both motos. Two Kawasaki-mounted Intermediates started wi th tbe Novice class today, fully expecting to show them how it is done. Litteral proved that he already knew, by keeping pace with the green machines for the first few laps. Not too far behind Litteral was the high-pitched scream of Pomona Valley Kawasaki's Wesley Klein on his KX60. Meanwhile, there was a close battle for third between Honda support-rider Jason Collier and Kevin Bussey (Hon). Liueral bad settled down to a smooth, stylish pace while Klein continued to embarrass the 80s with his flawless, wide-open style. Collier passed Bussey on the sixth lap and made it stick LO the checkered flag, making the order Litleral, Klein, Collier. Moto two saw Litleral holeshot and lead the entire pack for the first two laps. Then, so not to interfere with the Intermediate's race, Litteral let them by and began racing Mini Novice again. Klein was once again roosting on a red machine, but this time it was Circle City Honda's Adam Fitzgerald who had an obvious power disadvantage. With a worn out motor, Fitzgerald did all hecould to hold on to Klein's 60 down the straights. When they hit the turns Klein's shorter wheelbase gave him, again, a definite advantage and it was just enough to keep a very frustrated Fitzgerald in third place. Don Vesco's Kelly Pirchel was running founh, while Collier was making an impressive charge from behind and was pressuring Pirchel. On the sixth lap, Collier scooted by Pirchel and set his sights on Fitzgerald's Honda, which by this time, sounded like a moped without an exhaust pipe. 'Fitzgerald put up a good fight, but was unable to keep Collier's '84 Honda from passing ) him ~ t.··the ( se ?. .d-LO-Ia n l .... ..f • t ).~ j { t J ·1 '{ , Two Arizona riders charge through a corner at Deer Valley Cycle Park at the facility's fall re-opening race. Turk takes first, second in CMC championships By Kenneth Stein CARLSBAD, CA, NOV. 27 In the closest finish in years, the battle for the season championships of the Continental Motorsport Club's 250 and 500cc Pro classes went down LO the final race of the season at Carlsbad today. Despite a late season ·stan that left him more than 100 points down in each class, 17-year-old Don Turk entered the finale vinually tied with 250cc rider David Hopwood, and a scant five points down on 500cc class leader Matt Tedder. As the green flag dropped on the first 250cc moLO, Hopwood jumped out in front, but hit the first turn too hot, missed the line, and lost two places to Turk and Yamaha-mounted Todd Hoover. Hopwood caught Hoover on the second lap and spent the next few laps pinned to Turk's rear fender, until a rider fell in [ront of Hopwood. The pair tangled, and Hoover retook second before Hopwood got restarted. He fini hed third, banking on a better second moto for the points. Turk, meanwhile, had a 500cc moto to contend with. After a fifth-place start, Turk moved to third on lap two. By the halfway point he passed David Gerig's Honda, and slid by Tedder one lap later for the win. Hopwood holeshot the second moto, but tired halfway through the race, allowing Turk LO take the lead, the points and the championship. Tedder spoiled Turk's chances for a double championshi p in the second 500cc moLO, leading flag LO flag. Double duty tired Turk, as Gerig took second on the tenth lap. Gary Semics, whose Honda worked up from last place to edge Gerig out for third in the first moto, took fourth in the second. Hopwood thanked his sponsor, Holiday Honda, and his wrenches, Keith Lynas and Brian Werner, for their support in his twin come-frombehind atlacks. Honda rider Steve Lopez caught David Hoffman j also 0!l a Monda j ~or .. A3 r>'JH=ljItE )l ~1 the lead in the eighth lap of the 125cc Juniors' second moLO for the overall win. Hank Erler, on a Suzuki, took second overall by virtue of his thirdplace second moLO. Serrano and Blake share show with Blue Angels By Pam Hardin PHOENIX, AZ, NOV. 6 The fall re-opening of Deer Valley Cycle Park not only gave Arizona motocrossers the opportunity to roost through something new, but something to watch in the air. As the dust began clearing on the track, the coveted preision fliers, The Blue Angels, were maneuvering through the skies above. Comparable to their death-defying feats in theairwas.tbe ExpenSweepstakes race. The first heiH had Carloso Serrano and Rick Nagle swapping the lead several times in the first couple of turns. After two laps Serrano had settled inLO a comfortable lead while Nagle held a solid second. Back in third Yamaha support rider Tom Wiu held off another Yamaha rider Troy Blake, on a 125cc. Lancer-rider Scou Stallard pushed from behind. ~ II c t I 11 - \I Elf 1'3 \I E. l" ....:. fe Wiu dumped it, allowing Blake LO pour on the steam' in an attempt to catch Nagle. By the half-way point the positions were solid and remained so until the finish. Nearing the stan of the second moLO, Serrano thought he'd make a good show of it. He promtly cruised around the first section of the track, which officials rewarded him with a backward start. To even up the odds of the sweepstakes, the 125cc riders were allowed LO start balf-way up the staning straight with the 250s and Opens taking off behind the gate. And Serrano backwards. Serrano left the first turn in last, but after one lap' had moved into third. Blake was kicking it up in the lead while Serrano displaced Stallard for second. Nagle pushed behind Stallard. WiuandJonnie Deremo banged bars in fifth and sixth. A half a lap before taking the half-way sign, Serrano motored past Blake on the uphill. A few laps later, Serrano stalled in a bouomless berm and sat helplessly kicking over his engine while Blake slid past. Serrano finally got his mount fired up and made it a phoLO finish with Blake getting the nod for the secondmoto win. Serrano won the overall monies with one point to spare. Blake's3-1 score gave him the second with Nagle taking a consistent tnird. Results • V-ZINGER: 1. Jonathan Stewart (Itl): 2. Bart Blake (Yam): 3. Butch Spence (ItI). PEE WEE: 1. Brain Coole (Kaw); 2.
