the team's trailer from the Road Atlanta paddock area during the Grand National Final on November 13. We thoroughly enjoyed having to dismantle our bikes and load them piece by piece into a truck and friends' cars alter a four-hour endurance race and a painful crash. This type of behavior is not what we expect (rom the caliber of people we have been accustomed to associating with and should be viewed with dismay by all WERA competitors. Anyone with information regardin the theft is urged to let us know. Our B to V coverage gets started on p. 6. Photo by Oale Brown. A+for Hammel; read the paper The work done by many people and organizations has resuhed in the Barstow to Vegas race held on ovember 26. One person in particular "scored an A" when representing all of u and the AMA on TV, and that person i Rick Hammel, President of Di triet 37. Th December 4 issue of the Los Angeles Times is carrying a supplement just on motorcycles, the port and the industry. I am sure this will be po itive exposure for all of us. It could bean ongoing venture if reader input is favorable. I know many Cycle News readers al 0 read the L.A. Times either on a daily basis or on unday. If you like the format and the po 'itive exposure, drop a note to Connie Gillan, Division Manager, Times Mirror Square, Los Angeles, CA 90053. I know that many dealers are supporting this with paid advertising and the results should be new buyers and more enthusiasts to suppon our sport. PAT OWEN Temple City, CA We're checking In reading your arti Ie of the Dirt Diggers MX race in Kernville, California, on ovember 5-6, I was a bit puzzled. In checking with the Din Diggers, I find that Jeff Black ran as an E..xpert and Cini hed fir t, while John Condon finished econd. The article had Jeff Black winning the I25cc [n termediate cia s and the overall in the Experu Intermediate combined. The l25cc Intermediate class was won by Sierra Racing Productssponsored Gary Riekki, who finished third overall in the combined Expert/ Intermediate class. BRlA RIEKKI Arroyo Grande, CA We'll check into the discrepancies Mr. Riekki, then let you and our readers know what we find out. Stay tuned ... Editor. Santa Fe shorted Rumor has it that the reason Santa Fe Speedway is not having a short _track ational in 1984 is because the powers that be at the AMA are "puni hing" Howard Teidt [or shortening his weekly non- ational short track program. Whatever the reason, the AMA has made a misuJc.e by not sanctioning a shon track ational at anta Fe. The shon tracl<. alional is a race that is steeped in Grand ational hi tory. Riders like Fred ix, Gary Nixon, CarrofJ Resweber, Bart Markel, Roben E. Lee, Mike Gerald, Dick Mann have won theraceaod many lOpclass riders have called Santa Fe their home track year au.er year. Howard Teidt has made his mistakes as a motorcycle race promoter, but none of them warrant taking away one of the most exciting and prestigious races the Grand National Championship Sries has ever had. The sad part of the whole .thing isn't that the promoter lost his sanction, but that the fans and riders have lost what had been a mainstay on the ci rcuit for over 20 years. JAMES V. VIERITO On the cam In last week's issue which covered the WERA Grand ationaI Finals held at Road Atlanta, one of Team Ontario's most valued sponsors was omitted in the coverage.. CAM2 has helped me aJl year in my Superbike and Formula I effort. supplying the team with fuel for the many races we ran during the season. Everyone involved in endurance racing realizes bow much fuel is used in running four-, ix-, eight- and 24hour events and the cost involved in running a superior producL Their help was greatly appreciated and I wouLd like to thanJc them [or supporting us in the endurance series. I would also like to say thanks to the other companies that supported me during the year: Wiseco, Castrol, Barnett Tools, Kal-Gard, U.S.T. Chain, Nippondenso, and Bell. See you at the track next year!
