TEN YEARS AGO Three thousand riders were on hand fOr the San Gabriel Valley MOLOrcyde Club' BarsLOw LO Vegas hare and 1I0und, but only two were involved in tbe battle for the lead. The pair were Husky rider Mitch Mayes and c:z pilot Jim Fishback, and they dueled almost all the way. Mayes took three hours and 47 minute LO win the race, with Fishback only 41 seconds behind at the finish. Scot Harden, a Huskymounted pie·plater from Las Vegas, finished third overall despite a flat tire. Dave Cheney finished fourth overall on a 250 Yamaha, followed by the Honda Elsinore of Wayne Cook. The even t had a note of tragedy when two-time 250cc number one plate holder Larry Pfutzenreuter died of injuries suffered in a crash. I uzuki's Roger DeCoster and Maico's Adolph Weil split moLO wins and runner-up fini hes at the Livermore, California, round of the TransAMA. DeCoster LOok the overall win by virtue of his second-moLO win, but American Jim Pomeroy almost sLOle tJ;te show from the Europeans. The lJultaco rider had big leads in both moLOs, buta eizure in the first round a'nd a crash in the econd put DNF on both hiseffon . Top American honors went to uzuki-mounted Rich Thor~aldson, who finished fifth overall. 41 the 250cc Support class, Billy Clements turned in three consistent motos on his H uskv LO take the overall win. . Smith/Ashcraft Take Overall Victory In Baja 1000 Husqvama-mounted riders captured yet :mod>tt victory as the tCUD of Dan Smith and Dan Ashcraft woo the gruding Baja 1000. This c:xpen riding duo finished the event in the incredible time of 14 hours,48 minutes, 10.3 Riding a borrowed Honda, Marty Smith turned in a I 25cc Expert win at a CMC Carlsbad motocross, defeating Pen LOn rider Danny LaPorte and Honda-mounted Billy Urban. In the 250cc Expenclass that arne day, Rich Pinnick's CZ LOpped the Honda of Marty Moates, ~ Montesa-mounted Marland Whaley ended the ATA trials eason the way h started. taking the Masters class wjn in an vent near an Diego.
