This would nearly triple the area's size. The acquisition will be funded from $21.5 million recently returned to the California Off-Highway Vehicle Fund as a result of legislative action reimbursing the fund for money borrowed to bolster the State General Fund last year. Mike Kidd has announced a $1000 cash prize to the overall high-point rider in his Great American ShootOut series of indoor shon track races. A belt buckle similar to the one the Camel Pro Series winner gets will also be awarded. Points will be earned for top-five finishes in heats and semis as well as the top 10 in the main event. After the first round in Dallas the top Jive reads: I. Terry Poovey (30); 2. Garth Brow (26); 3. Ronnie Jones (22); 4. Rusty Gourley (i9); 5. Bill Herndon (18). The next race will be January 7, at the Tarrant County Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas. 'The Motorcycle Industy Council is sponsoring a new program for its aftermarket lJIembers, designed to bring the motorcycle industry warehouseldistributors and aftermarket manufacturers together for business conferences on two separate dates in 1984. Called the ABC Program, standing for Aftermarket Business Conference, the purpose is to provide a "cen~ral location and controlled appoIntment environment" where manufacturers and distributors can review policies and practices of conducting business together. Up to 13 private half-hour appointments will" take place each conference day. The first ABC program is scheduled to take place in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 11-12, and the second is scheduled for Las Vegas, Nevada, on August 22-23. Brock Yates, the man who put together the original Cannonball Baker crosscGuntry blasts, is at it again. In his weekly motorsports newslener, Cannonball Express, Yates has announced an endurance run he's calling One Lap of America. Yates says the OLOA is "not a race. Not a rally. Let's call it an-endurance run ... It won't be an ol,lt-and-out Cannonball race, but it will be non-stop and you'll bust your ass to finish, much less to win ... It will be rou'ghly 8,500 miles and will h60k 'together the four corners of this nation-Boston, Seattle, San Diego and Miami ... We'll start it in New York and finish there as weI!." Buzz Buzzelli, formerly associate editor of Cycle magazine, has been named Harley-Davidson's manager, public relations. Buzzelli will be responsible for press relations, the c'ompany's motorcycle test fleet, consumer relations, and Enthusiast magazine, which is published quarterly by H-D. Bob Klein has been named to the newlycreated position of manager, corporate affairs, with responsibilities for corporate public relations, broad-interest media relations, government and dealer relations, and film industry programs. Klein has been with Harley-Davidson since 1977 and most recently as manager, public relations. Motocrosser Steve Martin, who was a Honda Support rider in '83, will be heading to Japan to compete in a Supercross event in Tokyo on Decem- ber 4. Martin is currently involved in negotiations with Honda, and reportedly may stay in Japan for up to II months to contest that country's National MX series. The musical bikes game is also going on in the World Championship Trials arena. Only World Champion Eddy Lejeune is assured of returning in 1984 with a factory Honda contract. American Bernie Schreiber, the 1980 World' Champion, has his name linked with Yamaha's renewed trials effort although he is said to be happy with the machinery provided this yearby SWM. Grand Prix MX dates have been awarded to the U.S. by the FIM in the 250 and 500cc classes. New York's Unadilla will host the 1984 U.S. 250cc GP MX, on July 8. California's Carlsbad facility will host the '84 U.S. 500cc GP MX on June 24. Watkins Glen, New York, will be the site of the American round of the' '84 World Championship Observed Trials Series with that event taking place on June 10. The ISDE will take place in Assen, Holland, on October 1-6. Check out the Calendar section of next week's paper for a complete listingof '84 international champion· ship events. Barry Ferency, Chairman of the Board of MIG Industries, has annouced the appointment of Nancy Clifton as marketing manager. Ms. Clifton, who returned to the U.S. from Europe in 1980, has been active in the U.S. and European automotive and motorcycle industries since 1973. In the U.S. she has worked with Alphabet's Contemporary Classics Company and most recently with Interpart Corporation as marketing manager, motorcycle division. Clifton left Interpart to join MIG Industries, a manufacturer of gasgets, die cuttings and metal stampings. IN MEMORIAM: Eddie Arnold, a well-known collector of Velocettes, passed away November 21 as a result of heart·related illness. Arnold worked for Johnson Motors, then the west coast Triumph distributor in the '50s, and later owned his own Matchless! AJS shop. Due to new emissions regulations, the 1984 Moto Guzzis will not be available in California, where dealers are to be supplied with a number of 1983 models. Harry Klemm has recently expanded hi~ Klemm Research business with a new pipe shop and enlarged engine building facility. Harry describes his product for motorcycles, A TV's and Odysseys as, "all custom stuff for racers, premium quality but expensive."
