Jim Poet captured the AR RA Gold Cup title at Riverside Raceway and also recieved a $3000 bottle of brandy for his efforts. sneak by. As both men planned their last-lap strategies, they were surprised 10 see the checkers come out instead of the white last-lap Oagand ilturned into a drag race 10 the line with Nitto crossing first to take second. "Well, it was a moral victory just finishing the race the way Time Bomb' (his 550GPz's nickname) was running," stated RoioH afterwards. ''I'd like LO thank Whitney Blakeslee and Champion Moriwaki for all their help, I didn't have any problems with the bike at all, it ran great," remarked Nitto. RoloH went on to dice with Carry Andrew in the Open Super Street and it was quite a bailIe until a two-bike crash in turn 7B brought out the red £lag in the sixth lap. Finising positions were taken from that point in the race, putting Andrew in the number-one spot with RoioH taking second. jim Collins and Clint Whitehouse really put on a show in the 450cc Super Street, with Mark Capell right behind. At the Oag it was Collins by a slim margin over Whitehouse. The 600cc Box Stock was another tight one with Aaron Post and Poet going at it with Kenny Kopecky right on their tailpipes. The finish in that one was extremely close with Post taking it by less than a bikelength at the line. The 750cc and Open Box Stock had two brothers, Mark and Steve Shelton riding 750cc GPz Kawasakis in the Open class and taking one-two honors with Mark crossing first. But Mark didn't have it easy - he had 10 fight Earl Roloff the entire race. RoloH finished first ove.rall taking the 750 class win. RoloH found himself racing-byBraille in the last race of the day, the 750cc and Open Production, as an earlier delay caused darkness 10 descend before the end of the program. RoioH and Ducati-mounted Tony Guest really fought hard, despite dim lighting, and had one of the closest races and finishes of the day wi th RoloH winning by just inches. Results -24 VINTAGE: 1. The Pro's and Intermediates lined up for molO one; as the gate dropped, a massive explosion of men and machinery charged down the starting line. Up and over the table top hill, appeared Dane Wigington (500cc Pro), Alan Skiles (500cc Pro) and john Ray (I 25cc 1m) with Andy jefferson (25Occ Pro) and jim Hoover (25Occ Pro) side-by-side. It seemed like an eternity waiting for the leader to come Oying past the scoring tower and then, all of a sudden, Wigin~ton popped inlO sight followed by jeHerson, Ray, Hoover and "Mr. X" Ian Fitzgibbon (500cc Pro). jack Roach (250cc Pro), Tony Bienert (125cclnt.) and Ron Gibson (500cc Pro) were jamming in front of Bob Watson (500cc Pro) and Cal Stuebner (25Occ Int.). All eyes were focused on Wigington and jefferson as they pulled away from Hoover and Ray. By lap three, Wigington pressed a three- second lead on jefferson while Hoover, Ray and Roach tried 10 maintain some consistency. Fiugibbon was heard loud and clear as he showed Gibson just what a four stroke could do as Skiles, Watson, Stuebner and Bienert fought each other. With tinle being a precious faclOr, jefferson closed the gap on WiginglOn setting Hoover a small distance behind as Roach passed Ray. Fiugibbon and Gibson were still pushing at each other. Wigington and je(£erson increased their distance from the pack as Hoover, Roach and Ray swapped positions. jeHerson was calculating every move and then dialed the old throttle on to take command of molO one. At the checkers it was je((erson, WiginglOn, Hoover, Roach and Ray. The second-molO event popped up wilh the mid-day sun. Cal Stuebner was easy to pick out on the starting line as his front number plate read "for Sale". It lightened up the tension as jeHerson and. Wigington pulled up 10 the gate. As the twominute sign turned sideways it was Wigington inLO the first turn followed by jeHerson, Hoover, Ray and Roach. Tod Sciacqua (25Occ Int.), who fouled a plug in the first molO, reappeared for molO two in front of Stuebner, Skiles, Fiugibbon and Watson. There was some juggling of positions as jeHerson styled past Wigington to develop a three-second lead. Hoover, Roach and Ray gave Bienert, Fitzgibbon and Sciacqua a lesson in speed. As the order held firm the dual with verve and excitement developed between Ray, Bienert and Fiugibbon. Then it was Ray, Fitzgibbon and Bienert. Next lap saw Fiugibbon leading Ray and Bienert. Sciacqua, Skiles, Stuebner and Watson hung close, with je(£erson leading Wigington, Hoover and Roach. It was a wild and crazy time for both as Roach's reservoir was swinging with the punches. With Fiugibbon some. distance ahead, Ray and Bienert dueled unmercifully. Wingington gave the next few laps his best shot and closed the distam:e on jefferson. However, jeHerson was on home ground with a fine piece of machinery beneath him. All too soon for Wigington came the home checkers for jeHerson and the overall win for the day, Hoover maintained third followed by Roach, Fiugibbon, Ray, Bienert and Skiles. Results WOMEN NOV: 1. Hames on track at home, Thompson serves notice By Elaine Jones Photo by Dan Mahony CORONA, CA, NOV. 5 The first nighttime Triple Header at Corona Raceway proved to be a big success as the riders got a lot of racing on a primo track. The Pros were out in numbers and there were a few surprises by the end of the evening. The biggest surprise came in the Open Money half mile. It was a Starstudded field with Danny Perkins, jeH johnson, Pete Hames, Roger Thompson, Ross Thompson, Randy Bird, Greg Nelson and Ruben Malaguarnero all on hand 10 do bailIe. At the drop of the (Jag it was Hames out on top followed by johnson, Perkins and Thompson. The status-quo held until the fifth lap when Hames was suddenly gone and Perkins, who had moved 10 second in the fourth lap, found himself in the lead with Thompson right behind him and johnson third. Perkins and Thompson had a ballle royal from there on out, with the youngster from Norco giving a super performance his first time out on a Harley. It came down 10 the final lap, and as Thompson has done so many times before, he pulled itoutin turn four LO take the win at the wire by a slim margin. Perkins was second with johnson third. Thompson also added the Open Expert half mile to his night'S work. This time he followed john Barricklow for one lap before taking over the lead and never looking back. Barricklow gave a good account of himself but just didn't have the ponies to stick wi th the Mick Mockbee-turned Harley. Bill Matherson, who hasn't been around for a while, got by Calvin Rayborn III early on 10 come up with the third. Hames mav have had trouble with the Money ha'lf mile, but he was right on target for the short track and TT. The 250cc Money saw Hames give Roger Thompson a lesson in how to go fast as he dialed in from start to finish. He was still dialed in when the Open Money boys came to the line and left the dueling to those running behind him. Rod Sullival was 0(( second followed by jeH johnson, but before two laps had gone by, johnson was in second with john Barricklow hot on his heels. Greg Nelson moved up to challenge but got no further than Barricklow and had to seule for fourth. The Open Money TT saw jeH johnson take control early on with Hames in second and Sullivan third. On the fourth lap Hames made his move and took over the lead and from there on out the race was his. johnson was second and Sullivan third. Bob Graves is looking more like an Expert lately than an amateur as he came oH the back row in combined classes and ran with them. In the short track he was running third after the first lap, and held the position picking up his class win and making the Experts very uncomfortable, He still has some work to do on the half mile, but it was enough to give him his second Amateur wm of the night. No one dominated the Open Novice class. In the short track, jeff Hagge was out on lOp and stayed there. john Shipley, who was second at the start, bowed 10 the pressure of Richard Schroeder on the third lap and never got back into it and had to sellie for third. On the TT, it was almost a repeat for Hagge as he lead it until the last lap when bike problems sidelined him and Schroeder became the bride instead of the bridesmaid. Ken King, who is long overdue for a win, came away with the third. Shipley, who had been in the hunt all evening, was not about to be denied on the half mile as he exploded 0(£ the line and went wire 1.0 wire. SCOll Reed came 0(( second and held it for three laps before Hagge got by him. It was
