Abernathy sorted through riders in the first corner to pull in behind Storbeck, and the two riders put on a great show in the ensuing laps, with Abernathy trying for a pass in almost every corner. Storbeck held on for the win and the championship, with the hardriding Abernathy in second and Daft notching a third overall. Results Mike Friend pulled off a doublemoto win at the Black Hills final. Chesser, Storbeck spring to wins at NMA Fall Nationals By Bob Lepricot Jr. WHITNEY, TX, OCT. 22-23 Riders from 10 states converged on the beautifully prepared Lake Whitney Cycle Ranch for a taste of motocross racing National Motosport Association style as that organization held its Fall National Championships. Saturday's competition was a Minibike aHair only, with the best smallbore riders from NMA's midwest and southern regions putting their reputations on the line_ Many of the justreleased 1984 machines were being raced for the first time. Most of the tension on Saturday centered around the 83cc Stock Expert class. The principal players included Scott Chesser and Dennis Stephenson, both of whom had shown their stuff in the Intermediate class at the Ponca City Championships, and were racing with the Experts at Lake Whitney. Other riders who figured to be in the running were Edaie Vreeland, who had just signed a contract with Honda, Kawasaki rider Tommy Collier and Bryan McGary, aboard a new Honda. At the start of tbe first moto, McGary held the gas on the longest and swept into the first turn as the leader of the pack. Jason Langford and Chesser tried for seven laps to get around McGary, but as the checkered flag waved, it was the Midland, Texas, rider still in the lead. The second moto and the overall win belonged to Chesser. McGary finished second to take the secondplace trophy. Langford was a consistem third, Stephenson was fourth overall and Dale Storbeck came home fifth. On Sunday, everyone at the track headed for the fences as the 125cc Stock Pros left the starting gate. "Flying" Bryan Abernathy, riding a Tommy Conners-tuned Yamaha, had it all together as he pulled a sizable holeshot and proceeded to put on a fast-riding demonstration around the the loamy north-Texas track. Meanwhile, Danny Storbeck was making up for a poor start, and picking off one or two riders each lap. Time ran out on Storbeck's determined charge through the pack, although he had moved up to take a very impressive second behind Abernathy. Dennis Daft nailed down third. As the gate dropped to tart the festivities in the second moto, torbeck £lew into the lead going down the long Whitney start staight, taking a never-to-be-re1inquished po ition at 6' PEE WEE MOD. Over 300 people attended the banquet but only 80 of the riders could crawl out of bed for the last race. Track conditions proved to be ideal throughout the afternoon, as temperatures stayed in the high 60s 10 low 70s. In the Professional ranks, Rice Cycles' Dave Molder, the number one plate holder after 1983 in both the 250 and Open Pro classes, walked off with the afternoon's 250 and 500cc Pro categories as well, while in the 125s, Mike Friend roosted off with a pair of molO victories and the overall with the same ease as Moldertook all four of his rides.
