o• •-'I' dco-COlor.d..Wyo_1 place slot while Raby put Neel behind him to occupy third. . Open Novice action was highlighted by some friendly elbow exchanges between Mikey Coleman, his brother Jimmy and their arch-rival Michael Weathers. Before the evening was over things got a little out of hand with tempers becoming a bit elevated in the second moLO. A three-way collision near the end of the race was described in this manner by Weathers, "They double-teamed me pure and simple. Mikey brake-checked me and then Jimmy ran inlo me and slowed me down so I wouldn't pass his brother, which I wasjustabouttodo." Neither Coleman would comment, but the overall finish for the night was Mikey Coleman, Jimmy Coleman and Weathers. More on this drama as it unfolds in future meetings. Competition in the combined Expert division, while not as acrimonious, was just as inlense. Ron Dunfee, warming up for an NMA extravaganza at Lake Whitney, once again subdued his rivals afler two lengthy skirmishes. Dunfee and Frank Tello separated themselves from Hunter Carothers and Jack Beckham at the onset of the opening stanza, pulling well ahead of the two and refusing LO get involved in their private feud. Carothers and Beckham put on a textbook exhibition of cornering technique for several circuits, never more than a few bikelenglhs aparl. Finally, Carothers was able to slide inside Beckham and then hold him at bay for the rest of the ride. Tello, riding as hard and error free as he ever has, kept Dunfee honest over the entire heat and finished a nOl-loo-distaOl second. The subsequeOl Expert enCOUOler witnessed Dunfee once again moving LO the froOl, with Chris Loflin clinging to the second SP0l. Loflin's occupation of this position was cut short by both Tello and Carothers as they wrestled past, followed shortly by Beckham and Jerry Farmer_ It must have been a perplexing feeling for Loflin, since he was setting a brisk pace. Tello once again asserted himself in much the aggressive manner he had displayed in the first moLO and pushed himself into the second-best payo£( of the night, with Carothers seuling for third. The event today was the third and final meeting of a series to determine those riders who would transfer directly LO the GNC International Motocross Final LO be held at Lake Whitney Cycle Ranch next March. Fourteen winners from 15 classes earned that distinction after the day's round was completed, with Dunfee making doubly sure. Dunfee made two second-place finishes hold up for the overall cash i.n the 250cc class as moLO vicLOrs 80 Stegall and Steve Gauthier did not put together consecutive performances. After gaining the top spot in the first heat, Gauthier found himself unable LO get by Dunfee in the second trip around the beautifully prepared layout nestled in the sandy pines just outside Tyler. His need to pass Dunfee was made all the more imperative by the fact that Stegall had the lead. Stegall's crash-induced seventhplace scoring his first time out on the track, paired with a second-moto victory would only be good enough to allow him to climb to third in the overall results, but it meant that Gauthier wourd be knocked out of the big money unless he could ease around Dunfee. Larry Hughes suffered a disastrous spill in the final moto that voided his fine ride in the initial heat. Chris Wells made things even LOugher for Gauthier as he added his presence to the clash the second time up, applying heavy pressure at the outset. When the checkered flag came out the order was Stegall, Dunfee, Gauthier, and Wells. Thus Dunfee's 2-2 total took precedent over the 1-3 showing of Gauthier, with Stegall's 7-I tally earning him the third position over Wells and "Hard Luck" Hughes. Coupled with his vanquishing of Dan Howle and Jamie Mitchell in the Open Expert confrontation, Dunfee received a substantial cash reward from track owner Bill Law when the awards were presented. Law was the focal point of bitter controversy earlier in the day after he disqualified Wendell Trigg from further competition for disobeying a track official. The banishment came between moLOS of the .1 25cc Intermediate class in which Trigg was very much in contenlion at the time, having finished second to Billy Whitley in moto one. Though Whitley eventually got the overall trophy, he had all he could handle in the person of Chad Parker in moLO two. With Trigg spectating, Whitley admittedly did not have the pressure weighing quite so heavily on his shoulders, but nevertheless his bestefforts were not enough to deter Parker. Parker grabbed the victory ahead of Whitley and Greg Lewis, assuring him of second overall. •••••dco-Color.do-Wy• •lDg-.oataDa-.orth D"o..-Ioalla D. .o..-•••r -B.aM.-Okl Cenl..al Pipeline I-< CU ,.0 S ;> o Z CU Bryan McGary (114) leed. Friend wasted no time running up a big lead over Curt Hyde, who slipped by Goodsell on the third corner, but Hyde could not match Friend's speed and had to trail a distant second down to the wire. Goodsell went down in some mud late in the moto while still in third, which left Stace Waugh to pick up the show spot behind the leaders, ahead of Doug Wilson and a hardcharging Wagner. Friend again roosted off to an early lead in moto two, and no one on the track could keep him in sight. Ladd Poitra, who went down hard in the first moto, was running a strong second the first half of the moto, but was joined by Hyde and Wagner in the final laps in a slugfest for the runner-up slot. Poitra held off Hyde for three laps until the checkers came out, but Wagner took Hyde by surprise on the final go-around to take third. Overall, however, Hyde picked up the runner-up overall slot behind Friend, with Poitra's 6-2 good enough for third ahead of Wagner's 5-3 and Waugh's 3-5. Moto one of the 250s saw Billy Stork grab the holeshot on his Black Hills Yamaha, with Molder, Kevin Forrester, Eddie Porter and Lynn Hyde behind. On the third corner Molder blasted around the outside of SLOrk in a fast sweeper to take over the lead, and from then on it was all Molder's race. Stork kept the Honda in sight most of the way, but was unable LO challenge for the position the last half of the moto. Lynn Hyde motored around Porter and Forester to take a comfortable third by moto's end, and Porter picked up fourth after Forrester crashed four times in the remainder of the moLO. Round two saw Molder and Stork go into the first tum I -2, but after the first lap it was evident that Molder would go untouched all the way. Stork once more followed from a distant second, all alone ahead of the third-place Lynn Hyde, while Forrester and Porter again rode fourth and fifth. As Molder styled his way to the checkers, his lead extended even further, and he took the moto and overall well ahead of Stork, who in turn was ahead of Hyde. Forrester held on to fourth in the moto ahead of Porter, but it was Porter fourth in the overalls ahead of Forrester. The Open class was all Molder from the start to tbe finish of each race. When the gate dropped on round one, Molder took off ahead of Don Babb, Kim Bendigo and Perry Bicek, and from tbe first turn to the checkers lead all the way. Bicek took the first few laps to move past Bendigo and then Babb, but trailed a distaOl second by moLO'S end, well ahead of the third-place finisher Babb. Bendigo and Greg Laux rounded out the top five, each in a comfortable all-alone position when the race ended. Round two was a repeat for Molder, who took the holeshot and went unlouched for the full moto, while Bicek trailed a little closer in second this time but still barely keeping Molder in sight from a distance. Molder flew off jumps doing onehanders and no-footers for seven laps until the checkers ended the romp, with Molder the moto and overall victor ahead of Bicek, Babb, Bendigo and Lauz once again. Overall, the top five order remained the same. Results 125 PRO: 1. Mika Friend (Hon); 2. Cun Hyde (Hon); 3. Ladd Poitra (Yam). 250 PRO: 1. Dave M " - (Hon); 2. Billy Stork (Yam); 3. Results Clevenger the one at Austin MX By Joe Milian AUSTIN, TX, OCT. 21 Shawn Clevenger fired two unanswered holeshots at the opposition tonight in the 125cc Novice class at Austin Moto Spon Park, taking back-to-back moto winson his way to the overall victory. Clevenger's YZI25 was just a disappearing yellow blur as he led Matt Raby and Roben Tiemann into the first turn in heat one. By the second lap he had put considerable distance between himself and his pursuers, leaving them to cOnlend for the runner-up position. Kelly Neel, boxed in at the stan, managed to mouOl a drive late in the proceedings that carri~ him to fourth behjnd Clevenger, Tiemann, and Raby at the flag. The second round was another stroll in the moonlight for Clevenger, his only anxiety being caused by an overzealous throule hand as he did a long and stylish wheelie for the fans lining the fence just past the scoring tower.
