Fitzhugh notches Monroe win By Bruce Scholten Photo by Vic Ebbutt MONROE, WA, OCT. 21 About 150 "kids" of all ages flocked to the indoor short track program at the Monroe Fairgrounds tonight. "You've got to be crazy to come here, what with all the noise and smoke," mused Bob Henry, who manages the events for the Aurora Village Kiwanis Club. It is a little surprising they don't sell earplugs along with the hot dogs, but a propeller-mounted on a 1928 Wisconsin four-cylinder air-cooled motor keeps the air breathable. Such 'ingenuity has kept shon tracking alive here for 14 years, and generated a lot of national-ealiber talent, including Micky Fay and Randy Green. One of the current hotshoes is Chris Fitzhugh. The 22-year-old Can- Am rider captured tonight's premier race, th.e 250cc Pro event, ahead of Duane Gerrard's Yamaha. In the Open Pro race, he also snagged third place on a Lynnwood Yamaha, behind winner Duane Gerrard on a Yamaha, and Bryan McGonigal's Honda. Fitzhugh offered that he wants to broaden his racing scope, "I've got a 550 Seca at home, and would really like to try road racing'" One of a bunch of road racers keeping in shape during the 0[[ season, John Westphalen won the 500B "C main" on his 250ccTriumph Trophy. Another guy to watch is Ml. Vernon's Rick Hamilton, who won the 250A "A main," beating Mike Crater and Mike Enderson. Hamilton came back' later to take the 500A "A main" on his Cycle Circle/RJ Racing Kawasaki. "One young fellow we're particularly proud of is Larry Ward," said Bob Henry. Ward is just l2-years-old, and recently returned from a Kawasaki-sponsored dirt bike exhibition in Europe. Winning this evening's Mini A "A main" over Rick Fauver showed h is potential. Lynnwood Cycle Barn's Joe Fey wason top in the 125B "Amain," leading Darrin Anderson and Richard Arnold. Like many other motocrossers, he slid his triple clamps down in the fork tubes and went "flat trackin' J" Results MINI A "A MAIN:" 1. Larry Ward; 2. Riclt Fauver. 100 S "A MAIN:" 1. Scott Steffy; 2. Spencer BRENTWOOD, CA, OCT. 14 Mini rider Terry Bostard took off his foot cast and while the boots probably didn't fit as well as they should have, his winning style continues on the Team Green KX. Once again, Bostard smoked to the win in the Expert division of the combined Mini race. Matt Ramey mixed it up well in the Intermediate section, swapping spots with Todd Hicks and Daren Gallagher, with Gallagher getting second Intermediate lo Ramey. Don Swearingen proved his recent ch.ampionship win during the Old Timers Nationals was no £luke, taking the overall in OTIVet class, helped out when his closest pursuer Steve Machado did a reverse roll on one jum p. He timed a pass on Swearingen, as he had done successfully in the first molO, just as Swearingen changed his line and as Machado braked his Hayward Yamaha to avoid a collision, he stalled and rolled back 0[[ the jump. Theensuing kicks lost him the overall while Swearingen's East Bay Yamaha was as consistent as it~ .almost-43-year-0Id rider. Rich My then jetted 0[[ with each of the Pro runs, passing Craig Christian early in the hrs't round and then getting by Wayne' Archer after a good run in round two. Christian held on for second each time' while Archer notched third. with a 4-3 over Phil Crane, 5-4, and George Hopper, 7-6. Results • MINI INTlEX: 1. Terry Bastard (Kaw); 2. Mall Ramey (Vam); 3.
