STeve • Because it was the last race of the series and class titles were still on the line. all the riders at the Mid-West final were going for the holeshot. Hoenshell, Rhoten top Pros at Mid-West . Series final By Joe Milian Photos by Carolyn Smith TULSA, OK, OCT. 15-16 Oklahoma City's Clay Hoenshell brought the Coors Mid-West Motocross Series to a close by wrapping up titles in two separate Expert divisions at the final event hosted by Tulsa Area Motosports. In something of an odd combination of classes, Hoenshell took overall honors in the 125 26 and Open Expert standings for the four-race eries, which saw competition in Oklahoma City, Wichita, Hepler, Kansas, and Tulsa. Texan Darren Rhoten proved untouchable in helping himself 10 the huge cash purse offered in the 250cc class, winning all but one of the eight molOS in which he rode. Jeff Schumacher also made his presence felt during the four meetings, placing in the top fi ve in two divisions, the only rider except Hoenshell to do so. Hoenshell, who appears to be best suited for 125cc machines from a physical standpoint, belied that observation by making a clean sweep of the big-bore molOS, with eight wins in eight starts. His domination of the small-bike racing was slowed by Bryan Abernathy on the final day as Abernathy's 3-1 tally relegated Hoenshell's 4-2 showing to second overall for the day but in no way threatened his series position. Schumacher was poised 10 score an impressive upset alter his victory in the initial heat, but could scramble no higher than sixth in round two, dropping him to fourth overall. The Independence, Missouri, representative also put up a spirited struggle in the 250s, leading for much of the first moto before yielding 10 Rhoten and taking the £lag second. Gabf Magness, series winner in the Open Intermediate class, had some anxious moments on the last ser of heats as he crashed out of contention his first time out. Returning 10 the fray with a vengeance, Magness regained his accuslOmed spot at the top of the heap in round two. Danny Powell made two second place fi nishes stand up for the overall win for the day and mov,td him up to fourth for the series. Buster Brown Jr., the pride of Roland, Oklahoma, did himself proud by ending Saturday's session in the dirt by pacing Brent Martin and Brian Couthren to the big trophy in l25cc Novice action, then beating Tim FenlOn and Robert Owen 'in the 250cc Novices. Brown joined Hoenshell, Emig, and Palmer in leading the series. in more than one class. Jeff Emig's older brother Bryan added another of the huge series overall trophies 10 the family collection. Emig went into the last pair of molOS locked in a close bailie for supremacy in the 125cc Intermediateclass. Emig's back-to-back molO viclOries assured him the premier placing, a filling reward for some determined riding. Jim Redwin emerged the leader in a conspiracy 10 make the Over 30 series racing an all-Maico affair and evidently did a good job since the German marque occupied four of the top five places when the dust sellied. Prasifka prospers, Carothers cruises at Austin MX By Joe Milian Photo by Kay Tiemann AUSTIN, TX, OCT 16 James Prasifka made a shambles of the Mini Senior class today at Austin Moto Sport Park as he took his Meeks Enterprises KX80 10 two unchallenged wins in capturing the overall trophy. Joey SlOne, who has dominated this track of late, could not contend with Prasifka, and in fact, found himself struggling with San Antonio's Glenn Storbeck in an attempt to salvage second place out of the day's proceedings. Feelings between the two young competitors were a bit strained after a second-molO confrontation put Storbeck off the track. While the battle raged behind him, Prasi£ka was fast and smooth through the turns and over the jumps en route to victory. A seasoned veteran of small-bore connicts, the young rider demonstrated why he is so highly regarded in Texas Minibike racing. "I read in Cycle News that the best Minibike riders in the state come from Houston, but there's some pretty good ones around here," the eversmiling PrasiCka stated at day's end. Everett "Emersome" Lee put in one of the better rides in recent memory as he led all 250cc Beginners to the line. Kasson Racing team member Weldon Hubbard, taking the lead away from Lee midway through the first molO, made a strong bid for the win himself, but in the end it was not to be as Darin Gautier dropped him to third. Gautier is the younger brother of former Cen-Tex star D.A. Gauthier. Another rider who is gaining more confidence and speed with each outing is Jon B. Ross. Ross stayed the course after a disappointing firstmolO performance and saw his persistence rewarded with a first overall in the l25cc ~inner division. His 4-1 tally nudged Rick Silman down to second, with Sam Mabry filling the third-place slot. Robert Aldaz. returning to Austin after a lengthy absence, rode two crash-free motos at a consistent pace 10 allow just enough margin over Jimmy Barnard for the fourth-place trophy. After easily winning the first mota of the 250cc Expert class, Hunter Carothers found himself a distant second at the halfway point of the second round. Since he was being led by first-heat runner-up Kevin Horton, Carothers quickly put his college knowledge to work and calculated that his silUation was untenable. "I was just sort of loafing along. expecting Horton 10 make a mistake. When I saw those crossed £lags it woke me up and I realized I'd betterget 10 work," was the manne.r in which Carothers explained his predicament. Once he turned up the wick, there was no SlOpping the clean-cut collegian and within two laps he was pressuring Horton. The pass, when it was finally executed, was neal and neet. By the end of the molO Carothers had put sufficient distance between himself and his pursuer that he could have SlOpped an~ done a pop quiz without sacrificing a penny of his first-place pur e. Horton received the checkered £lag in second position both times and took po session of th overall money for that placing. Lee Dubose raced teve Hester to the line and took third overall. Lasater locks up GNC qualifier a By Gary Willer TYLER, TX, OCT. 16 It was the fifth and final race in a series of Grand National Championship qualifiers today atSwan Raceway. Good weather with partial cloudiness kept the track in great shape all day and changes made 10 the course cancelled out any advantage the local riders would have. It was a great day for Tony Lasater in the l25cc Novice class. Kawasaki-mounted Lasater was "Mister Consistency" in leading the largest field of the day on every lap pf both motos. Chasing Lasater on lap one of the first contest were Todd Eschberger and Jason Jessup. Steve Hill was in fourth position off the stan. Lap two was a carbon copy. On the third trip around, Hill went ahead of Jessup, who was experiencing mechanical woes. Lasater's domination was now apparent as he rode the rest of the way uncontested to the wire, with Eschberger and Hill eating his dust. Moto two again found Lasater grabbing the early lead never to relinquish it. Again Eschberger settled
