into second with new faces in third af,1d fourth; Steve Ash and Jeff Gilley. On the day, Lasater went to the head of the class (with a runner-up spot in 250cc ovice as well). Esch berger took home second and Ash was third. The Experts, as expected, were exciting. As it turned out in the 250cc Expert class, a bad break cost Bo Stegall the big bucks. Stegall was lookin,g strong and steady with the lead in the first race until he went over the handlebars after a stair-step stadi um jump. The crash came on lap four and Stegall slipped to fifth. This allowed Larry Hughes to hold a two: If!.p lead. Behind Hughes and closing was Steve "Rajun Cajun" Gauthier, making up for a mediocre start. In tbird place was Ron Dunfee, who had worked his way up from sixth. On lap six, Gauthier got around f,Iughes, which left Hughesand Dunfee to duel. Dunfee. outdrew Hughes on the next round-tripper and they went to the checkers unchanged. Stegall finished seventh. The second 250cc Expert moto saw Stegall steal the show. Once again the Honda hotshoe showed the way, taking charge from the start. Chris Wells and Lavon Lucas fell in behind. Gauthier was somewhere back in the pack. On lap two, Lucas went by the wayside, and Dunfee dove into third. Stegall continued to lead on lap three, with Dunfee second, Wells third. and Gauthier on the move. On the fourth lap, the "Rajun Cajun" climbed over Wells for third spot. T'he Hondas still held the top two places. Stegall broke the tape first, while Dunfee made the runner-up spot for the second time, which was good for the gold. Gauthier's third elace earned him second overall honors, and Stegall was third for the day's efforts. Results 250 EX: 1. Ron Dunfee (Hon); 2. Steve Gauthier (Yam); 3. Bo Stegall (Hon). 125 EX: 1. Orr BOYD, TX, OCT. 15 In one of his not-too-frequent appearances at local tracks, Terry Poovey wrapped up the trophy dash and 250cc short track main at Mike Kidd's Hillside Raceway, with Bill Herndon ridinga close second both times. Poovey, aboard the AI Lamb's Dallas Honda short tracker he rode in National competition last year, won the first 250cc Senior heat with ease ahead of SCOtt Scherb and James Harrington. Herndon rode his Jack Sizemore-sponsored Honda to the win in the second heat, followed by Charlie Orr and Dodd Dyson. In the main, Scherb was first into the corner but Poovey and Herndon shot by on the back chute to run the show up front. With Poovey in the lead, Herndon stuck close but couldn't get into a passing position. Scherb hung onto third place while Shon Stovall jockeyed past Orr for the fourth-place finish. Kevin Switzer charged hard into the lead in the 125cc TT main, followed by Alan Powers, Marty Strickland and Bobby Shaw. Shaw came from behind to move into second by the end of lap two, then on the last lap took the outside line around the Winston turn at the end of the front straight and took the lead away from Switzer. Shaw won the race with Switzer following in second and Powers in third place. Results SHORT TRACK TROPHV DASH: ,. Terry Poovey (Hon); 2. Bill Herndon (Hon). 50: 1. Jason Adcock (Yam); 2. Reichardt claims Bandimere title By Herman Von Kleate BANDIMERE, CO, OCT. 15 Bandimere Speedway closed its 1983 season today, and despite a threat of snow, Chris Reichardt was the hottest rider on the track, scoring a perfect 15 points to take the track championship. The Division One riders battled it out on a wet track and as the evening wore on, it was clear that four riders would have a shot at the title - Reichardt, Rick Steele, track record holder Brian Hoel and 1982 number one plate holder Ken Pieper. Reichardt finished his five rides with 15 points, the maximum attainable. But through four rjdes, Pieper was also victorious, needing a win in his last ride to tie Reichardt and force a run-off for the championship. It was not to be however, as Pieper, making his first appearance since having two pins removed from an injured shoulder two weeks earlier, ran second to a determined Rick Steele. Reichardt took the championship, the gutty Pieper was second, Hoel was third and Steele claimed fourth. The Division Two battle ended with Steve Smith in first, followed by Mark Head, Vincent Reichardt and Marty Bland. David Brauser (1) stays in front of Rocky french (646), David DePrato (555) and Shawn Clevinger (9) in the 250/0pen Novice race at Austin Moto Sport Park. Fleck flags down double win at Ross Downs By Bob Bagwell 'COLLEYVILLE, TX, OCT. 15 Hard-charging Brian Fleck won the hotly contested 250 and Open motos at" the every-Saturday-night Ross Downs motocross races. His only contest in the Open class carne from Mark Meucci riding the only non-Japanese motorcycle. a Husky. Meucci took over the lead on the first moto and held on until Fleck got by. Mark Welton came in second and Charlie Reynolds finished third, with Meucci fourth. The 250ccrace saw Fleck lead all the way in both motos, with Charlie Galbenski, "The Gainsville Flash," second and Kevin Brown a third. PJ Webster still held on to his winning ways in the 50cc events. Tim Clements was second, with Arron Davis third. John Williams won the 80cc events with, Iihle Clint Carlton, on a 6Occ, placing second and Jeff Smith third. A Dads race on these 50cc bikes was a real joy. The dads were so big sitting on the little 50s. One even bounced off the flat-track wall just like the big bikes do. The fans loved it. Tiemann tromps Austin Novices By Joe Milian over the rights to lhird place, trading positions thr04ghout their two-round clash. The two competitors tied on points at the evening's end, but Neel got the nod because of a better secondmoto finish. The 250cc Novices comprised the largest class of the evening and Gary Berry demonstrated his patented holeshot technique each time out. U nfortunately for Berry, Hank Hodes got good jumps off the gate also and reeled him in before the halfway point of each contest. Kenneth Farmer returned to the track after an extensive layoff and rode well enough to stay in contention throughout the race. His efforts were not good enough to stave off the determination of Pat Harris, however, and he was forced to accept a fourth-place trophy behind Harris at the close of the program. Deno Farmer put in a good secondheat performance, but a spill in the initial moto kept him from figuring in the overall results. In the Expert action, Hunter Carothers continued his comeback with a strong showing in the 250cc class. Jack Beckman, still sorting out his new YZ250, was off form although his 2-4 score was good enough to allow him to take home second-place cash. Stephen Hester found the Expert company a lot tougher to deal with in only his third time competing in greenback racing. Hester's superb starts kept him near the front during the opening laps and consistent maneuvering of the tight course put him fourth overall when the accounting was completed. Carothers' 1-2 kept him at the head of the class, with Beckham second and "Soup" Simmons third. • AUSTIN, TX, OCT. 14 Austin's Robert Tiemann emerged from a bit of a slump tonight by posting back-to-back mota wins to capture the overall victory in the I25cc Novice class at Austin Moto Sport Park. Showing the form that made him almost unbeatable during the summer months; Tiemann hurled his YZI25 into th.e lead in both heats and proceeded to walk away from the rest of the pack. Jason Walker, the rapidly improving young rider from Giddings, gave futile chase in each round but was only able to get within a few bikelengths of Tiemann in moto one before falling back.
